I think it will eventually happen but will take time to phase out. Ultimately the manufacturers (Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony) are motivated by profit. If it's all digital there'll be no second hand or disc retail market (no more cex in its current form). This will make it easier to force consumers to buy directly from them at inflated prices from e-stores. They'll have zero disc production costs because discs won't exist, cutting out factories, storage, staff, transportation etc. They know most people won't complain because digital makes up most sales anyway, and digital consumption will only go up over time.

It's also the concern around production of unnecessary plastic, most countries are very focused on green environment these days. Personally i think it sucks that it's going in this direction, especially since i like to collect and own something tangible. But i do understand that it's not sustainable long term to produce them. What i would like is the chance to have more DRM free games, GOG is doing a tremendous job there. I would love to see this model of selling digital games on consoles as well.
9:36 The massive and long installation come from the disc not the store haha. The game is on the disc but you can’t play the game from it like PS2
I grew up in the 80s and loved boxed physical releases, but I'm afraid the future will be digital only, may be a box you can buy, but will only contain a digital code....a shame
I think physical games will still be widely available this generation, including Nintendo's next console. But since the largest 4K Blu-Ray discs can max store up to 128GB, it will only be a matter of time before AAA games goes beyond that limit. It won't be very cost effective to release new games on multiple discs. With improved textures, higher resolutions and open worlds, it will just eat storage space. So i can't imagine the PS6 or the next Xbox to include a physical drive. Unless there is a new 1TB optical drive in development for 8K which i highly doubt!
Surely they can’t get rid of it, I’ve recently had no internet and if I didn’t have physical media or games downloaded already, then I wouldn’t be able to play any games 🤷♂️
I grew up in the 80s loved buying my vinyl's, VHS tapes amd the cartridge games for the NES and the SNES later on, i love CDs still, my PlayStation collection i love collecting for and Blu-ray from PS3 onwards, i love owning the copying in my hands im not a fan of digital at all especially with the stires for PSN and Xbox live close like the 360 store you have no access to purchase them anymore unless they are downloaded to your console, i agree options for all and everyone is happy with their desired choice 🌟🙏♥️
Let's all act now and supporting digital and continue buying physical
The meme you referred to about PS5 only having remasters and rereleases of PS4 games, the people that think that obviously don't play many games. Since it's launch the PS5 has had games such as Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, God Of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Deathloop, Forspoken, Returnal, Pacific Drive, Stray, Sackboy, Stellar Blade, Ghostwire Tokyo and many more smaller/indie games Plus the abundance of third party titles such as Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4. Yes there are quite a few remasters on PS5 but I don't know why that suddenly makes people blind to all of the actual new games that have released too.

It's because a great many of those games aren't just this generations games. They're still PS4 games too. It's unlike the ps3/ps4 generation where things actually moved on

@@cayletalks I do think that the new generation of games should have moved away from Xbox One / PS4 by now but I guess the argument could be made that last gen is still being supported due to how many people never got the new consoles at launch, it didn't help that they released during covid and there was supply shortages and stuff, but at this stage it's now been nearly 4 years and there have been quite a few games that have been for current gen only so I'm hoping that trend continues. Especially if PS7 etc is apparently coming around 2027
100% Digital only is coming. Sooner than you think I reckon. Most people already buy digital. over 90% of all gaming purchases in the UK are from digital storefronts, and when compare digital purchases to their equivalent physical purchase, i.e like for like, digital makes up 60-70% and has been growing rapidly for several years to get to those numbers. I also think the way retailers are transforming their business, with the likes of GAME moving away from trade-ins and pre-owned stock, multi-national supermarkets like tesco and asda not stocking anymore, makes me think that physical new releases aren't long for this world. I anticipate the next generation of consoles will have add-on disc drives available as a physical accessory for enthusiasts, during which time there will be some kind of solution put together to create digital licenses for backwards compatible games. Something like a £3 transaction fee allowing you to create a digital licence with a physical disc. And then from the next generation onwards it will be all digital. And honestly, I kind of want all digital at this point. I get the joy of collecting, but most of these games will no doubt end up at landfill, as they likely already have since video-games first started to be made, which is incredibly wasteful for something that functions just as well digitally.

No chance most people still buy physical, birthday presents, Christmas presents, etc, of course people buy digital but still most people buy physical !
@Hazz3r

@@RetroNintendo81 I'm afraid that isn't the case. It's well documented that digital sales dominate the video games market by multiple organisations based on actual sales data. Over 90% of all purchases, and somewhere in the region of 60-70% Digital when comparing like for like purchases.
@RetroNintendo81

@@Hazz3r where are you getting this data from? I believe what you are saying is false! Most people still buy physical, stop scare mongering! False information as always clearly don’t do your homework!
I grew up without home internet until about 2018 and as such all games I bought were physical for all my systems. Regional digital pricing needs to be a thing for every publisher, 69.99 quid is 84 USD and that's just robbery. Phys games are usually cheaper too.
@Hazz3r
17 күн бұрын
That IS regional pricing. Publishers sell games in the UK at a premium, they are more expensive in the UK than the US. If there wasn't regional pricing then we'd be paying the equivalent of $70, so £55-60.
@SlySinatraa
17 күн бұрын
@@Hazz3r Not entirely true, they just set the price at 69.99 everywhere. Recent releases such as Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance are £59.99 and $69.99. It's just publishers fleecing us.
@Hazz3r

@@SlySinatraa My point is that what you're asking for, regional pricing, is something that's already in effect. Regardless of how publishers decide, the fact that you pay a price specifically for the UK market is regional pricing. If you didn't have regional pricing, then you'd be paying the USD converted equivalent. That's the whole reason why its important for lesser developed countries to have regional pricing, because $70 in that country might be the equivalent of a weeks wages in a really decent job, and doesn't actually match the economy and market of that country. Instead, with regional pricing, they'll pay the equivalent of $30-40 perhaps, because that price serves their market better.
can you do a full tour of all the games you have so far
Agree with you as normal, Cayle. I did see in Game that Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3 Remastered is now getting a physical release.

It is ! What a great news!
I think there will always been a demand for physical, if i can't buy it on disc it doesn't interest me, every single game that takes my fancy, i always check if i can buy it physically first before making my mind up about that game lol
Good video as usual pal. If you want my 2c then sony and Microsoft will be start selling external drives for a LOT of money and will continue to work on the backwards compatibility library
I think we might but at more so that something will replace the discs much like how discs replaced both cartridge and tapes from the older generation consoles, like you said discs are reaching the point were even blu rays cant hold the entire game in one anymore. I think it would switch to something like a chip similair to the nintendo switch. it would be more cost effective and save more space in the long run.
I only buy digital for games that don't have a physical copy, hopefully digital doesn't take over completely or I'll have to stay behind as everyone moves on to new consoles
9:36 the disk is NOT just a licence to download the game, the disk HOLDS the game PS5 disks can hold 100gb of data which means majority of games have the full game on disk, it needs to install it to the SSD cause reading off disk ain't fast enough
@cayletalks

These days that doesn’t matter too much being as the version on the disk ends up being so drastically different to the game you’ll play a year later

@@cayletalks thats definitely true, but saying new disks = just a licence is wrong because it makes it sound like its dependent to the psn store, which isn't true if the sony servers go down you have no access to any of your digital games while a person with the disk can still install and play their game with the disk and obviously the popular games get released with the GOTY tag and those will have the updated version on disk (Cyberpunk for example)
Xbox are absolutely the ones to do it. With the game pass model it feels like a forgone conclusion. I think Playstation may keep it around longer and releases as you said wont be day one, special releases down the line. More vinyl like. Im happy to go digital for convenience with modern games as i mainly just use sub services and wait for sales. Besides the value of that actual disc if the playstation service ever shut down (big hypothetical) is questionable at best due to day 1 updates and even incomplete games shipped on disc. I scratch my physical collecting itch with a little retro system called the evercade.
I expect that what Sony has done with the PS5 slim will be the new standard going forward. I expect the PS6 and next Xbox to be digital-only consoles with the option to buy a disc drive separately. I don't really mind all that much since I transitioned to digital only in 2021 when I got a digital PS5 and later bought the Xbox Series S.
If it's a game I'll never trade in and will always got back to then I buy digital. I do buy a lot of physical games for 360 and ps2
The only game I own digitly is Forza Motorsport 6 and thats only because it came bundled when I bought the xbox 1, if I dont have it in my hands then I dont truly own it.
I hope not, I will continue to keep buying disks. The lara Croft collection is also getting a physical release after being digital only
Its already happening with collector's editions unfortunately just look at GOW ragnarok and a few other collector's editions £200/300 for whatever the collector's edition is and a piece of paper with the game on it
Look at Alan Wake 2, they lost big time on sales! So no I don’t think physical is going anywhere
It won’t completely vanish! There will be a really small market for it and then a few years later it will make a come back like vinyl etc.
Disc will go it’s new generation they target my kids like digital more than disc because they don’t have change disc ever-time play game
current gen will be the last consoles that accept discs imo, the ps6 if they call it that and whatever microsoft call theres will be completely Digital consoles
hope Alan Wake 2 gets a physical release someday!
