Why are people complaining about PS4 exclusives being highly represented? It's not DF's fault that Sony's first and second party developers poured more artistry and technical genius to squeeze the most out of their boxes. But that doesn't mean the video as a whole was unfair to other devs or publishers. The final three choices are a PC iteration of a game, an XBox One X iteration of another, and 1 PS4 exclusive. They even had a section in the video that gave praise to Switch for some ports that went beyond what was expected and got the most out of the tech Nintendo's little box could give. Seemed like a fairly unbiased review of the year in visual tech all around.

Like the ps3, how the games looked in launch, the problems we hadon that machine, thetechniques using during that period and how it changed through the years. That be awesome, to se how better understanding of the hardware sometimes can look even close to a generation leap, such as when you compare early ps3 games with gow 3 and Uncharted 2 and 3

This year we've been really caught up in scandal after scandal involving big companies like Bethesda games studio, EA and Blizzard. So much that it makes you lose track of the important stuff, the improvements that are happening along the way. Way to put a positive spin on things. Merry Christmas.

If anything, the audience/consumer is the most important aspect. I'd argue the specifics of those "scandals" are just extremely important to fixate on because they are aggressively detrimental to the most amazing technological _art form_ humanity has ever experienced - *especially* when companies expect low quality products to sell at high prices so they can cash in on stealth price gouging monetization. Every industry that is taken seriously - especially artistic - has its target for which uncompromising high quality is produced or served (culinary, music/symphony, theater, clothing, etc ) and the gaming art form is mature enough to have results on par with the best art in the world. Enthusiasts holding companies to near impossible standards only makes for better quality (something I learned in the military). Aiming high should be attempted without exception. The industry already crashed once due to being inundated with low quality at high prices - from which Nintendo, Sega, and arcade games pulled us out. It's the largest, most lucrative industry we have ever seen and has several spanning markets, not just one anymore: hard core gameplay seekers, graphics junkies like us here, casuals like on Twitch, soccer moms on the go, etc. It has many moving parts, none of which are are more _important_ than others imo - that is except for the audience.

The only reason why there's so much negativity is because most of the KZreadrs make things seems worse than it really is. These KZreadrs know that people love drama, to get more views on their Channel they spread more hate. They're no different from cnn, fox, and all the other corporate news channels. There are so much positivity in video games lately, but KZreadrs don't like to talk about positivity because that's not what makes them money, they make more money talking about bad things.

'Distant Object Detail' technology in Red Dead 2 is the best I've seen yet. Also impressive is the minimal LOD pop-in and the way in which it portrays lights for distant objects such as towns and cities and campsites, even down to volumetric glow light scattering above the immediate areas. I only have a GeForce 1070 so there's no raytracing tech to help out and although I don't know how they managed to fake it so realistically, I really appreciate this attention to detail.

It does better reflections than RTX BFV IMO. But the most underrated game of 2018 got to be Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It brought my PC to its knees and looked photorealistic at times.

@@scynapz I mean dmc 5 is the combat. Its a bunch of repayable arenas. I really liked god of wars more grounded combat though. I'm used to dark souls etc and I found it much more fun, smooth, and impactful that soulsborne games. There probably isnt enough variety for multiple playthroughs but I found it plenty engaging during my time with it which was 30 hours or so

Not how grounded and realistic it feels. You telling me that there isn't enough for a multiple play thru proves my point exactly. While in games like DMC the combat is what makes you wanna come back and play the game multiple times.

Detroit: Become Human is the first game that has crossed the uncanny valley for me. The facial motion capture is just so groundbreaking.

Going to give it to Red Dead Redemption 2. I have been gaming since myst on windows 95 and 98. I currently play on Xbox one X, I would have to say that RDR2 was by far the most moving game I have played in my years of gaming. Gave me the adventure and pull of my favorite books and my favorite tv series and I was hooked. I think the voice acting and animations took the cake, but the environment was spectacular as well. Kudos rockstar for such a well polished title.

They could've made this video in 2017 and 2016 which would've done the same thing. PS4 has amazing games every year. Hell, PS4's best looking game is from 2016 (Uncharted 4), and one of its best is from 2015 (the Order 1886) and was $3 on sale

For me 2018 went to Sony, they released three amazing games this year and haven't played anything so refreshing in years. The downside to the exclusives was 30fps but the consoles do make that frame rate feel "better" Detroit become human blew me away in terms of graphics and story

After 25+ years of playing on PC only, you guys have actually convinced me to get my hands on a PS4 Pro just to play the exclusives. Boy oh boy, I did not regret it. Games played so far: Uncharted 4 Gran Turismo Sport The Last of Us Remastered The Order 1886 Horizon Zero Dawn Detroit: Become Human ... Of course a modern gaming PC is way more powerful, yes it's just 30fps at times, yes it's mostly checkerboarded 4k. But guess what. Once you get used to it, it's just an incredible experience.

Thank you for a great recap of the year 2018! I always enjoy watching your videos and I can't wait for what awesome videos you bring in 2019. Cheers!

From a technical standpoint, red dead 2 is astonishing, and set a new level to aspire to. However gameplay seemed to suffer as a result, which I'm not sure is a good trade.

Technically, yes, RDR2 set a new tech standard for open world games. God of War set a new tech standard for liniar games. Witcher 3 still is the standard for games in general.

All in all, it was an amazing year full of gorgeous games.

Where is Just Cause 4? That world is absolutely massive and the graphics are amazing, as well as the weather system.

I'm surprised that we don't have a complete God of War collection on discs for PS4. - God of War - God of War II - God of War III - God of War Ascension - God of War Chains of Olympus - God of War Ghost of Sparta I'm aware they did a remaster of God of War III, but I'm looking for a 4K remaster collection of all of them on discs.

I feel sorry for the people that didn’t get to play Spider-Man and God of War. They truly missed out.

@@djcrimsonsunbird3607 Graphics and story are ok. The rest (IMHO) is just a copy of the far superior Batman series, which is better in every aspect. Especially stealth, fighting and the structur of the side missions/challenges did not impress me I even liked traversal better in Arkham. But I'm glad lhat many people have a lot of fun with spiderman. 🙂

Hey guys, great video but hot tip: when there's a couple of you on camera talking at once, it's better to have you facing each other a bit more. When you're all straight at the camera, It's kind of awkward for the two staring into the camera while the third guy talks. If you're more angled, you can look at each other and it's less awkward. Maybe for next time.

Spiderman came out at a busy time, I really need to finish it. Same goes for pretty much my entire library of ps4/switch games lol. I always play games halfway and move onto something else.

Detroit was an awful game imo felt like I was watching a movie instead of playing a game.

The lack of mention of fallout 76 16 times the detail is almost criminal.

02:55 - Of what little I know of game design, they have to choose their lighting model super early on in the project. They could have gone with an LDR space or HDR space. Considering this game has been in development for ages, obviously they started with an LDR space with gamma and not log.

Honestly, the most exciting part of RDR2's tech is how it's going to apply to GTA 6.

Of all the games iv played i have been the most impressed by Shadow of colossus. Rdr2 Spiderman God of war And detroit become human.

Why are the animations in AC: Odyssey so bad? AC3 still holds up just because of how good the animations in that game are.

TanTheMan Temporal injection is using higher resolution geometry edges while shading is done in lower resolution. DF did some interviews with Insomniac on their tech for Ratchet and Clank over eurogamer, you'll find more about this there :) DLSS is just a upscale done with the help of AI to improve the quality.

Severely lacking marketing too, hardly anyone heard about it till it went free on PS Plus. It’s a shame Codemasters had to make lay offs for what was an excellent game that suffered from lack of exposure.

timbrookes when Sony shut these guys down and went to codemasters we wanted to see motorstorm on the Xbox .very true though . They was so let down by codemasters . I wouldn’t be happy at all if I was in them guys shoes

Onrush control is horrible. The gameplay is also confusing.

It’s an accessible arcade racer with handling to match. The gameplay is pretty straightforward too - you either boost lots, race through the gates, or capture the zones.

I guess it makes sense, since it's mainly focused on graphics, but I think BO4 should get an honorable mention for getting Blackout to run as well as it does on the COD engine, which previously only had to handle a Max of ~18 people, jumping up to 80 in the beta and now 100.

people complain how these consoles are old hardware, but these games you talk about are the most impressive looking.

Rockstar game design isn't outdated. What they do is something no other writer/developer would attempt to do. Blending narrative with player choice isn't easy when they have to give you freedom as well

Player choice is the last thing you’d see in RDR2.

My game ofhe year is Spiderman. It looks great even on my Standard ps4. Also have a Xbox One S but have not top game of the year 2018. But played some older games on it. The best looking game I could try out was the Master Chief Collection.I am really impressed how well These old Halo look on the Standard Xbox. Thanks to DF though I am really tempted to get the One X as soon as possible. I am not that interested that much in the pro though. The Ps4 Basic model is good enough for me.

When you choose to only have one mic active at a time, it really sounds like someone "off cam" is commenting, rather than just letting the other 2 people comment on what's being said. Just a small critique on the discussion. But otherwise a great video with some real interesting graphics talk! Now i'm gonna have to give Spider Man a try :D

31:15 Truer words have never been gesprochen! Most texture mods feel like HD stickers. They just don't fit the environment at all.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider look amazing on the Xbox One X as well

It does, but it is 30fps at 4k high, compared to an absolute top end pc doing 60fps at 4k ultra. And this game benefits from 60fps, whereas not all games really care.

Ricco123tube yep but from a technical standpoint I am not sure... the reflections are quite bad and watching them closely reveals just how nonsensical they are, NPCs look terrible and textures are really flat if compared to actual top titles like gow, rdr2 or bfV. That being said, spideys character Modell and the water are top notch

12:14 Yeah. DICE certainly isn't afraid to push PC. That's for damn sure. Whether gamers want to hear it or not

Hunt Showdown is a seriously underrated game but its a difficult game to run where i have to put a lot of settings on low where I can play on high on other games.

I watched your videos all the time, but from time to time I skipped the comments. Actually most of the time I skip the comments, only because the comments are full of ignorant fanboys, on all sides. If you're a true gamer you can respect all platforms..

Good call on the inclusion of OnRush and Forza Horizon 4. Onrush was criminally overlooked and FH4 written off as a "just the next installment" update but both do some amazing things. Hard to argue against your top 3 though. Great video, cheers!

One thing I will say about the comparison of RDR 2 to GTA V is: GTA V came out at the tail end of the PS3 lifecycle. Then it released on PS4 pretty much almost immediately after the release of the PS4. Now, I think a huge mistake/missed opportunity on Rockstars part is by not having GTA V capitalize on the power of the PS4 as far as the PS4's updated rendering techniques/effects (Ex. more realistic facial scans, Godrays, more particle/smoke effects as far as sparks/embers popping out of an explosion and thick black smoke.) And instead of them releasing a remastered version of GTA V on PS4, they basically just ported the PS3 version of GTA V over to the PS4.
