I have had it since it was released, and I still regard it as one of the best I have ever had. I also have 500cm and a triplet of lenses plus a Hasselblad H3D, but they fit different purposes. The X1D is favored when trekking and climbing due to its light way and small form factor, the others are more for near surroundings and studio work. Go for the X1D, you wont be disappointed.

Todd, impressive videos and imagery as is usual from you. I was born and raised in Drumheller and visit many of the places you've shown here constantly. I see a lot of comments about the expense of the X1D compared to film and I think it comes down to your methodology, what works for you. Either way you'll be spending a lot of your hard earned cash. I have owned the GFX50s and thoroughly loved it. Lenses were fantastic and the files were very impressive and I would imagine quite comparable to what you are able to get from the X1D. The size of the X1D is what I see as a huge bonus. Right now I am enjoying the craft of medium and large format film and still occasionally shoot digital with a couple of the Sigma Quattro cameras, which are also designed for a slow, contemplative approach, and with gorgeous files. Cheers!

I have a couple of friends that shoot with the X1D II, I was really impressed with the camera design and the files. Another friend passed me his Fuji GFX 50 (on two occasions) and I handed it right back to him, I could not bond with that at all. The CFV 50 C II digital back has your name all over it, would integrate well into your system and workflow, utilizing your current lenses, I see from a comment that you've already got a bead on that one. Thanks for the video!

  • @jdpst20

I am strongly considering a GFX50s as the lenses are more in my price range however I had the chance to use the Original X1D when it was released for taking my own wedding photos on a tripod with the help of a friend to push the focus and shutter button. I was blown away by the detail and results. I do have an Xt3 which I Love the Fuji files but there was something about that form factor and IQ of the X1D I'm still lusting over it.... I also own a 500CM too so I'm a bit biased to Hasselblad.

Coming from a background in large and/or medium format analogue photography the speed, or lack there of,with this camera is not an issue and can even been viewed as an asset in many applications. As the digital age of photography begins to mature, and become less disposable, it's nice to see companies like Hasselblad (DJI) and Leica retaining their heritage of superb industrial design and build quality merged with excellence in image quality and optics. Thanks for another inspiring video!

@Quinton Gordon: Good point you made. Same here, coming from the analogue world and having done most of my analogue work on 6x6, 6x7 or 4x5, I fully agree. I am using the Hasselblad X1D (Ver1) for years and in parallel I have started with the Leica S System as my nature/landscape backbone, I am often asked on the speed (lack of) of both systems, thre crapy AF and so forth - but I don't care. I am still working as if I would use my view or MF camera, getting the right angle, getting the right view, lighting and so forth and then working from a sturdy tripod, having the workflow clean end-to-end, think twice before you press the button...I tend to think that this was a good and precious school for me...and I still keep my 4x5 Toyo and Arcas, shooting b/w from time to time, just to keep my brain awake...

Great video and some superb mono shots you observed and captured there too. I dare say that you as a creative photographer though could no doubt take great shots with an old 35mm film camera with a decent lens on it - so it’s not what you’ve got but how you use it that counts. All the same, a camera that’s a joy to hold and use, is something which never fails to excite an urge to shoot.

Love the pictures. I have been using Fuji for about 5 years now. Started with an xt2 and now have the 100s after a couple years of using the 50r. When i bought it i had said to myself if i wasnt satisfied aka excited, id get out of the Fuji GFX system altogether. I also enjoy shooting bnw and square and 2:1. First camera I’ve really ever customised with a few shooting modes. I can see a jump in quality from the 50r. I was a bit worried id hate the non analogue feel of the dials and the complex menus. I have a couple of Leicas and they are so much simpler. But all that said the quality of the files (dependent on my skill and judgement) has been really satisfying. The Hasselblad does look great though and the pictures are a pleasure to see. Best wishes, Roger

Hello, thanks for all your helpful videos. I've been shooting with my Linhof Technika IV for over 20 years and for each of those 20 years have been wondering when digital cameras will get to the same print quality as a 4x5" and be slightly affordable! And now 4x5" colour film is so extraordinarily expensive I'm looking harder! I've been looking at the XD II for past couple of years for all the simplicity reasons you've described. It just looks like a classic film camera. I've owned a Hasselblad 500CM and have to say that I enjoyed my good old Mamiya C3 student camera more than it. I've always found the looking down to look ahead really awkward. However I do love medium and large format film cameras for the print quality. That Hasselblad have released a camera that is medium format quality but you can use like a 35mm SLR is really attractive to me! What would be the largest size you would print to without getting into too much fancy software enlarging with the XD II? I know I could find this on camera review sites but I feel much more comfortable asking someone who actually still uses film! I often print over 1x1m prints for exhibitions.

The X1D II is not square it's 546 format, but, you can set it up in the menu to shoot in square format so you are looking through the viewfinder in the square format. When you download the RAW, you get how it was cropped but you still get the whole 645 image the camera shot, best of both worlds.

Sorry you can't but I have a bit of a work around. I was going to explain but then I thought I would confuse too many people, so I am going to do a separate video on my settings. Depending on the lighting, I set my colour temp way up and then play around with the tint, I can make the image look pretty monochromatic or with a bit of a sepia look. It will freak people out when then bring the image into the computer, but of course when you shoot just RAW, it's just one click to get it back into daylight, and of course I convert everything into b&w. I realized after I uploaded the video I should have explained that much better. My apologies.

I ordered the X1D when they were first introduced in 2016. I took delivery in 2017, and have used it since. My sentiments mirror yours. I too, take my time and concentrate on one shot at a time. As a result, after 5+ years of shooting with it, my frame count is still below 10k. I also came from over 30 years with a square film Hasselblad. Interesting that Hasselblad spent years trying to convince photographers to shoot square, and after me finally succumbing to their propaganda, what did they do!? They ditched square for rectangular sensors. O well... Curious about a couple of things you do - Do you use Phocus to initially edit your files? I import them into Phocus just to save them from 3fr to .fff files. I hear that embeds useful data which would be lost otherwise. From there I go to LR to PS. Also, when you set the viewfinder to a square format, does that follow into post, or, once in post, do your files return to the original 4x3 format? Love your square b&w prairie images. So glad I found you on You Tube a while back. My equipment, and the way I use it just echoes exactly the same type of methodology & philosophy you incorporate. (Including the Sekonic light meter!)

I use a program called FastRawViewer to look at the RAW files, it's very quick and I make my selects, the ones that I will work with on that program. And yes they come into that program as the full 4x3 colour files. I then move my selects to a folder then open up Phocus and import them into Phocus. I work on the files in there, not a great program but great colour science. I do my final weeks in photoshop. Sounds like a lot of work, but really very quick and seamless. I am not a fan of LR. Your process sounds great, for me it's all about slowing down and trying to make a really nice image. Cheers and thanks for watching!

I don't like the look of the medium format Fujis but have considered them for the future, but realise now your remarks weren't aimed at the XT range, which seem as well built to me as most. As for the collection, sadly little left now. After ridiculous chopping and changing (and stupid financial losses - sold the M4 and M4P just before the explosion in prices for 1/2 what they would cost me now; ditto the R8, R9 and R6.2), just two EOS1s. mint OM2 and scruffy Om1 and 3 Minoltas (SRTs and an X5 worth about $25 !) and a beautiful Alpa 10D (now that IS well built!). Plus an old mint Zeiss Contaflex just because it looks so nice. I didn't mention the Horseman 4x5 monorails (excellent), the Super Technika - traded before even used, like the Arca Swiss, doh - the Gandolfi (overrated), Penatx 645 sold for a loss with 3 lenses after 2 rolls (much of this "get, lose, re-get, re-lose..." triggered by my vulture of a very expensive and selfishly absorbed Ex - she is one I don't regret losing!) and a Leica Monochrom 246. I regret giving in on that so soon but it came, new, with a filthy sensor and was forever getting dust spots even without lens swapping. Others reported the same - so much for legendary build quality there. But back to the Fuji XT 2 - great little camera, should have kept it!

People these days have an illogical obsession with speed and frivolous features, only because the marketing gurus make them believe that it is of paramount importance. X1D was never designed to compete with Sony A1 or Nikon Z9. It is primarily a slow camera demanding a slow methodical approach, very much an analogue approach to photography. Yes, The price of film and associated chemicals has gone through the roof. A pack of 5 Kodak TMY-2 120 is now approaching £ £50.00 in the UK and the more old fashioned Tri-X is even more expensive. Foma used to be reasonable and compared to Kodak it is still a cheaper option, but the Ilford films are quickly catching up with Kodak. Doesn't look good for film photography.
