I'd confidently say you're wrong in stating that Digimon is too mature for it's target audience, on the contrary I'd say Digimon RESPECTS its target audience and doesnt talk down to them. Digimon deals with real world issues that kids can face and helps them see that its not all doom and gloom.

The last part of what you said is a very good statement. Sure it’s fun to see children’s show get ballsy, but more than that they can really expand perspective’s of younger viewers.

I grew up actually with all the digimon seasons(up until Fusion) and had a blast

I really want to note that mature doesn't always mean "for adults". I watched digimon as a kid and some lessons I learned from it are still really important for me as an adult. I think it's a perfect all ages show that has important life lessons for all ages.

As a kid who went through a divorce while 01 was airing, the subject matter is not only not too mature for it's audience, it was perhaps the only show on TV for kids back then that directly portrayed how messy family dynamics can be, and the impact those dynamics can have on children even at a young age. I have spent my life wondering if the choices I made as an older brother were the ones Tai might have made.

I agree with you, it childhoods and especially changes in family dynamics have and hold huge impact throughout our lives. I really appreciate Anime like Digimon which tackled these challenging topics 🙏🏽

Machinedramon was a big missed opportunity. After Puppetmon was given so much time (and rightfully so) Machinedramon was dealt with too quickly. If I were writing the story I’d have Machinedramon disable the kids digivices, ya know because they’re machines. Instead of dealing with him with brute force, they’d have to use strategy and tactics. Izzy could give him a virus disabling the digivice blocker. Sora would use Garudamons flames to weaken his armor and then Wargreymon could destroy him.

The ending of Digimon Adventure is really something special. I rewatched the series raw as an adult to practice my Japanese, and there was a comment on the final video from a Japanese woman in which she said, "I'm a grown woman in my 20s, and watching this final episode made me stand up from my chair and cry profusely." I didn't stand up, but I did cry. And even a few years after that rewatch, hearing Brave Heart or thinking about the ending still twinges my heart a little bit. I'm 29 at the time of this comment. It's interesting that that series hit me harder emotionally as an adult than as a kid. I think it's because although I loved Digimon as a kid, I only got to see it sporadically while my rewatch was a cinematic experience of the full story in just a few days. Also, of course, themes like saying goodbye to loved ones hit deeper as an adult when you have a lot of real life experience with bittersweet goodbyes. Ygg Studio made an analysis of Adventure 1999 that picked up on some even darker themes that I was oblivious to with Mimi's character. I also didn't process the fact that Matt & TK were reenacting the trauma of their parents' divorce when Matt separated from the group. Kids mimicking parents' dysfunctional behavior is one of many examples of how deep this show was considering its age demographic. Then there's also the subtext that Tai & Kari's dad is an alcoholic, and that they were somewhat neglected, which is why Kari is a 7 or 8 year old girl home alone with a cold in that mid-season episode.

Yeah Digimon IMO really hit its stride in story telling, they realised they can’t compete for the same audience as Pokémon and so leaned fully into their niche in later series…. Series like Tamer, Frontier and Saver where amazing, much more mature storytelling… ~Ray~

I wouldn’t call this show underrated per say, but it’s definitely a good anime recommendation

I guess under-known is a better word? I think most of the people who know it exists have positive feelings regarding it, but it doesn't feel like it has a big audience. This is especially so when you compare it to other franchises that appeal to the same type of audience.

I won't mind this becoming a series Cover and the rest of the franchise

Great summary of the series. I loved this show as a kid and never appreciated how great the characters and stories are. As a kid I just loved the action and digivolutions. That first time Agumon and Gabumon warp digivolved is still one of the most exciting memories of my childhood. I still get chills watching it

Ah the good old days of Fox Kids. Dude, you really should watch Frontiers and especially Data Squad (Savers), cos DS follows a much older cast, and the story does feel more ‘grown up’, I reckon you’ll enjoy it! 👌🏽

To be fair, making the kids turn INTO the digimon did Season 4 did the show no favors. Lots of people dropped it because of that.

Digimon Adventure, especially with Piedmon working in the background is like the plot of IT by Stephen King.

Actually Devimon apparently did NOT create the black gears. He simply came across them, and just used them for his own ends. It was never explained where the black gears came from, and what their purpose was supposed to be. Also Devimon and the other villains WERE revived at the end of the series, Devimon himself even appeared in the sequel series, Digimon Adventure 02 Angemon held the greatest advantage against Devimon, Myotismon, and Piedmon due to his holy vaccine typing being strong against their "Nightmare Soldiers" grouping along with their virus attributes as the holy vaccine attribute was strong against both. Myotismon only held out against Angemon due to being an evolutionary stage higher than Angemon, but it was also mainly because he was powered up by a fog that boosted his overall power, it was also the reason he was able to take on the other Ultimate level digimon. Piedmon also held out against Angemon due to being two evolutionary levels higher, until Angemon digivolved yeah

Yeah it was because of the attribtue advantage that Angemon did so well against Devimon, Myotismon, and Piedmon, while also performing badly against other antagonistic digimon such as the Dark Masters Funny enough, Metalseadramon was not originally supposed to be a Dark master, as evidenced by his data typing. The Dark Master of the sea was originally going to be Pukumon, a virus attribute small pufferfish mega digimon. But because he didn't look intimidating enough, Metalseadramon was used instead. In regards to the Dark masters, here's a fun fact. Lorewise the most powerful of the Dark Masters is actually Machinedramon, NOT Piedmon. Even in Digimon Adventure, Wargreymon only defeated Machinedramon because of his "Dramon Destroyer" claws, weapons specifically designed to kill dragon/dramon type digimon, AND because Wargreymon was heavily powered up. There's actually more to Machinedramon than people think that's covered in the Wonderswan games, which also ties into Digimon Adventure 02

@@Pridam No he wasn't. Wargreymon was not powered up at all. What Homeostasis did was make the power of evolution that depleted come back to Agumon. The one who received a powerup was Metalgarurumon from the bloodlust and sheer hatred of Yamato. But the powerup served to kill Pinochimon faster than he would have done it normally. Destroying the power of darkness with the power of darkness is like fighting fire with fire. And the Dramon Killers wouldn't be such a factor since tehnically Mugendramon isn't even a dragon anymore. He doesn't belong to the Dragon's Roar but to the Metal Empire.

@@tomykong2915 Dramon Digimon are Digimon with dragon factor data in their Digicore as per Coredramon Blue's DRB entry. They are not limited to just Digimon with "dramon" in their name. And Black Wargreymon said during Rearise that the Dramon Killers are a weapon that is specifically effective against Digimon like "us" to Monodramon,aka he included himself as well since he is a Dragon Man Type.

side note dna digivolution is used for to things fusion witch is what omnimon does and jogress witch is what happens with PAILDRAMON (its the same thing more just pointing out that he has to names with it)

I absolutely love DIGIMON. It was one of the first anime I watched growing up. I still remember my dad buying vhs which had random non chronological episodes of season 1 from my local Asian hairdressers.

I remember waking up every Saturday morning as a kid to watch digimon adventure. It was so engaging! I love it And pokemon. Both are good and have similar key parts but are mainly different in the end. Great job on this video! I want to see every digimon series done by you! Keep up the great work! 💜

Even as a kid I enjoyed Digimon Adventure more than pokemon. The biggest reason is because of their ability to go back and forth with their digivolutions and because they actually spoke.

I'm pretty sure the lore about why an egg didn't form for devimon was because of the mark on his chest, which is, from my own attempts to understand the lore, an indication that a digimon is marked for deletion, and when they die, rather than an egg forming, their data is sent to a nebulous place called the "dark area." Interestingly, it's also theorized by some that Devimon did have an egg form albiet in the dark area, and that's where the DemiDevimon serving Myotismon came from. Not sure what the odds of that are though.

That’s a fascinating theory, and makes sense too! I don’t suspect DemiDevimon came the potential egg of Devimon, the turn around seams to quick as it appeared DemiDevimon, had been serving Myostismon for some time, maybe even prior to the Digidestined arriving on the Digital World.

Digimons can only Go back to the anterior form when the digivolution is made with the help of the divice

@@raytaku_ This is also the reason why Gatomon (Tailmon) always seems to stay in her Champion form. She achieved that form naturally, and it's only the levels beyond that are made through the digivice.

The movie that explain how kari knows is called Digimon adventure from 1999, which serves as the prologue of the original anime. Our war game is the sequel where they debut Omegamon. The sequence is kinda f up since in western those 2 movies (alongside Digimon 02 movie, which takes place after 02 anime series) are put in a single movie called Digimon adventure the Movie

@@raytaku_ There actually was an effort made by the team to, not only "americanize", but connect the three original movies. For example, they put Kari narrating/commenting on the events of the movie to make those connections (such as the causal link between Diaboromon and the virus in Kokomon which, naturally, is not present in the original, unrelated movies/OVAs), and also some changes in dialogue. However, they did cut some scenes, mainly in the third movie segment (Hurricane Touchdown). I still love this Frankenstein of a movie for nostalgic reasons, and that also applies to the songs (except the "Digi Rap"), but I also recommend watching the original movies in Japanese; not only for the awesome OST but for the content which was cut or altered in the dub. As Ahmad said, the first is just called "Digimon Adventure", then the second is "Our war game" and the third is called "Hurricane Touchdown - The Golden Digimentals", or something like that.

It's one of my favourite shows, and it still holds up to this day. Besides the rightly criticised nineties humour and the few instances where the 10 and 11 year old characters was sexualised. Yeah eugh. I don't think I like Digimon for being Digimon in it self, but the way it can be a unique vessel or platform for interesting stories were it fx can highlight sociological or psychological issues. The character work is stellar especially for the target audience. Perhaps the show is even to subtle for children that age, but it does heighten the rewatch value. It doesn't talk down to its audience which is among the reasons it's so great. Hot take here: the les digitalized Digimon is the better. I love the contrast between the world being digital and then how it appears so natur like. You can though ask the question how it can be so good when it leans on so, so many tropes. It, I'll say, grounds itself with the children's family issues. And who can't relate to some of them?

I first saw Digimon on a VHS tape. There was recorded some random series with English dub, overdubbed by my native, Latvian language. At that time I was a child, so I didn't understand a lot of things, but I really loved these series. When I got older, I got to watch the full, original series with subtitles and I understood, how much English dub (and direct translation from Eng dub to Latvian) changed things. There was a whole lot of things made more "comic" or "funny" instead of more serious and dark like it was in the original. I don't know, if there is better dub now, but I woudn't reccomend to watch that old dub at all. Also, this video is really good. A lot of things said, that were lost by a lot of another reviewers, but I was a bit of sad, because you skipped Joe's and Mimi's arcs. Thanks for the video ~

Yes, one of the original comments in this video also highlighted how much the Dub(s) change the dialogue in the show…. A lot of the English dubs dialogue has some cringe moment where they are cracking jokes in clear heated moment, but the overall VA is so could that it made up for it IMO Ahhh I didn’t think anyone would catch that, tbf I put my hands up in this video Joe and Mimi especially got the east love, they are so easy to leave out but are such great characters. Haha I’m part of the problem here not giving both of them there due…. Thanks for engaging with the video, and the kind words ~Ray~

Digimon is a great show. Especially the first 4 seasons. But the Adventure sequels, Tri, and Last Evolution are amazingly beautiful

My favorite is season 2 just because I got to watch all the characters grow up and see different digidestend around the world. The soundtrack for season too was rad also. It was the first time an animated tv show grew up with me. Maybe the first ever for America

@@raytaku_ Gonna hard disagree. Digimon Adventure's pretty good for what it is, but that's it. Definitely not on the level of other big 90s/early 2000s anime. The fact that the biggest praise people tend to have for is "being better than the Pokemon anime", which was a completely different thing entirely, should really say everything.

Kind of disagree with the idea that Digimon adventure shouldn`t have been marketed to young kids. Not because of whether the kids can relate to it or not but I genuinely believe that if Fox hadn`t wanted to compete with Pokemon and market the series the way they did Digimon would have never gotten a foothold overseas. Keep in mind that it completely lost that footing after Fox sold the rights to it. People weren`t huge fans of season four but they were still around talking about it then afterward they were suddenly silent. The thing is, when it comes to entertainment, young kids will give anything a chance whereas if it had been marketed to an older group the whole Pokemon clone stigma would have likely been much worse and caused it to fail from the getgo.

Digimon Adventure 01 was more immersive to me then the first Pokémon season, but I still love them both equally

I saw Piedmon and just remembered... Yesterday, May 12th 2023, completed exactly 20 YEARS that Piedmon's Brazilian voice actor, Paulo Flores, passed away... his impressive bass voice was versatile to play both light-hearted, comedic buffoons and deep, serious chracters (notably sadistic villains like Piedmon).

Hey man. I love digimon. I was born in 1990 and grew up with pokemon and digimon as a kid. I love both but i connect more with digimon. I spent hundreds of hours playing digimon world 1 getting 100 prosperity and a bunch of medals. ( all techs, chart filled, special tournaments.) Digimon has a special place in my heart. The way the show portrays real life issues and struggles really resonates with me on a personal level. Its a true gem of its own. Not like pokemon at all. Almost opposite. Instead of the world already having these creatures. Digimon takes that concept in an entirely different direction producing these creatures in their own digital world before the human world even knows about it. Love your videos man watching all of them. Youre covering the stuff i grew up on. Much love for that. Be well and take care. I hope to see more

Having only seen Pokémon before first watching Digimon, I remember even back then that what captivated me to the show was the characters and the plot. Pokémon characters just rarely ever capture the depth and realism the main Digimon cast had. Izzy was probably the first one that I liked because I related to him being nerdy and socially awkward. It was the first time I saw a main character that had that sad a backstory. I also remember liking Sora a lot and looking back, I realize that she is such a well written and likable female character. Something you very rarely see in a shonen anime, let alone one for such a young audience. Being a young kid, I admired seeing a girl that was as brave as the boys. She’s also just so cool, level headed, and chill. She felt like such a “real” character to me at the time and I really admired her. I never even thought of her for her gender, I just liked who she was. Tai of course, was a standout just because he was so similar to ash but more likable and competent as a leader. He was always in a good mood, brave, and fun, despite his vulnerabilities. It felt like he was always trying to work past his vulnerabilities with sheer determination. I always sided with tai when he fought with Matt. Matt grew on me as the series went on because of how devoted he was to protecting his brother. I saw him as the mature older brother to the rest of them. Like tai, he had vulnerabilities but worked past them because of his strong personality. Joe may have been the oldest and most mature but he was always scared. It took me a while that he really had the most realistic responses to the situations they were out in, even though my young mind didn’t want to admit it. Now, I find Joe very relatable. I also liked Mimi after the episode when she saved everyone from monzaemon. I loved the bond she shared with palmon. Like Joe, Mimi came across to me as a flawed character but now I realize that the flaws make them both more human. I also liked that she showed compassion for the numamon despite being grossed out by them. She had great development. I related to TK since I was around his age first watching it but I also liked seeing him grow up by adventure 02. TK is basically the gohan of digimon. He took on the same role in 02 that Matt had in adventure 01 but with a less edgy personality. Same thing with Kari, really. Her role in 02 reminded me a bit of Sora in 01. All of these characters got fleshed out so much throughout the series. That’s not easy to do for any show, let alone a kids show, meaning that the writers really put a lot of passion into Digimon.

Dude, thanks for sharing your thoughts. It was a super intresting read! I love Digimon for the reasons you mentioned, the characters are so much more complex and nuanced compared to other shows targeting younger demographics during that time.

The best digimon series! There's a kid for everyone, who all go through so many real things, you can find yourself relating to all of them in some way. I love the way Tai and Matt balance each other out. And yet, they still leave space for all the other characters to thrive.

I remember enjoying this series so much. It was actually scary at times and i find the series much more immersive than pokemon because the digital world is just as strange for the viewer as it is for the protagonists. I especially like the episodes where the digimon enter the regular world.

I liked Digimon better as a kid than I did Pokemon. I think the series did something great to have captured the hearts of so many. Digimon Tamers, in my opinion, remains the top series and I love it even now as an adult. Great show!

What a fantastic video, as a digimon lover I'm so happy to see people talking about it (specifically adventure). Back when I was a kid I was only paying attention to the digimon, but the truth is that this series is for all ages. After rewatching it as an adult I realized how mature it really was and understood its most important messages. Digimon Adventure 1 and 2 will always hold a special place in my heart (and it's a tradition of mine to do a rewatch of these two series periodically). The only thing that's annoying for me is the lack of a dvd version for Italy (sadly we never got it and I'm italian). Man what I'd do to have the DVD of this gem.

I used to think Digimon was better than Pokemon. Now, as an adult, they both have their own special place in my heart. I prefer Digimon because it resonated better with me as a child, but I absolutely love Pokemon. I think if we didn't fight over which is the best, Digimon could been in a better place than it is nowadays

I whole-heartedly agree that the marketing did NOT do it any justice, as a kid I "liked" Pokémon and even then I could tell they were different series as I LOVED Digimon with it's character arcs and progression as a story. I remember playing Battle Arena on the PS1 for hours and struggling to not keep dying while going through Digimon World 3 (that game is NOT easy for a kid to figure out, it's my favorite Digimon game but I couldn't beat it until I was older with a guide 😅)

I was always a Digimon kid. I loved both Pokemon and Digimon. Pokemon really dropped the ball when it came to story telling. There were aspects of Digimon I didn't like, but as a adult. I can appreciate Digimon so much more now.

3rd favourite Digimon series here. During the initial time Pokemon and Digimon appeared in existence, I adored both. If one should be forced to choose one over the other, I choose both. Those who opposes, TOO BAD! The only choice you should choose is YOUR choice. You like one, pick one. You like both, pick both. About Adventure 01, in the case of the JP version, the only thing that concerns me more is them spoiling the 8th digidestined too early thanks to their ending theme. I mean they did overshadowed it, but still, don't spoil it like that until it actually happened in the show. This is one change the US dub has done very well. The rest of the show, I enjoyed. Would like more Hikari (Kari) development though. And more Ladydevimon VS Angewomon, but that's just me.

The real story is that Pokémon actually did came first with the original Red and Green game debuting in 1996 in Japan but Digimon came first to the US soil with the Virtual Digital Pets in January 1998 eight months before Pokémon anime and games to be introduce to western audience.

The finnish dub i grew up with was so bad people still laugh at how bad it is today😂 Tho 1 thing they didn't fuck up was the music which was still the original ost not the awful american version.

Besides the cringey dialogue, and the god awful Digi-rap the English dub did a great job for the large part (I think it’s helped by the fact that most english dub watchers, didn’t get to see the original growing up to be able to compare it too)… I definitely prefer the Digimon voices in the English dub compared to the original, but besides that the original version is superior in almost all other aspects.

In the last episode when Kari was about to give her whistle to Gatomon, did she take off her whistle which is under her neckerchief or did she untied her neckerchief so she can take off her whistle?

DNA Evolution is not only possible for Digimon of the same level, it can be used by Digimon of different levels. Also there are a few Digimon that are higher level than Mega but these are the ones that are supposed to be like what "God" would be in our universe. Additionally the first part of the movie aired in japan before Digimon Adventure as an "unofficial promo".

@@SoraDonaldGoofy99 that’s the last season I watched before initially dropping the anime, I wasn’t a fan of the change of tone in the Unova seasons. But… the X&Y series went on to become my favourite season of Pokémon ever (discounting nostalgia ofc). If you’re a fan of Pokémon but have yearned for some character growth for Ash, then X&Y will be right up your ally. The story telling, the art style and animation are all top tier!!! 🙌🏼

@@SoraDonaldGoofy99 you definitely should, you won’t regret it. Yes I’ve played the first Cyber Sleuth game, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Only thing that I would add is that the first series, while it does provide the blueprint for the other ones, is fundamentally different, probably because the producers realized they needed to do something radical to compete with Pokemon. You see, the first Digimon Adventure is heavily influenced by religion, and it's not just the symbolism with angels and demons. The premise of religion is that in the past humanity had a link that was broken, and that you should live trying to restablish this link. The series works just like that. They are literally the Digidestined, they were chosen to perform the task to save the digital world, and the basis for that was an event that happened years ago, when they were too young to understand what happened. In the Digital World, the mysteries are not revealed right away, they receive information kinda backwards in time, as they defeat enemies, they get closer and closer to the origins, in the past. In the final episode Gennai reveals that there were DigiDestined before them, it was probably a hook to another season, which would probably be a prequel. In any case, that never happened, and the idea of the Original Digidestined was mentioned very briefly in tri. It's very likely that they had some radical ideas to try to make the series work in the first season, and when they got it right, they decided to simply milk the franchise with more standard content.

No way!!! I had no idea. The Dub has always referred to it as DNA digivolution. In Adventure 02 Izzy mentions how Omnimon is a DNA digivolution + In the Digimon Movie: Diaboromon Strikes Back, Agumon & Gabumon 'DNA Warp digivolve' into Omnimon. I learnt something new, and I definitely need to spend more time learning the native language, cos to your point its not uncommon for Dub(s) to change around terms for western audiences. Appreciate the insight, and the kind words 😊 ~Ray~

@@raytaku_ The dubs are notorious for these kind of translation errors. And sometimes i think the original versions get stuff mixed up. Theres a moment in Xros Wars when all the main protagonists arrive for the pseudo final battle and Tentomon explains all their digivolutions. Omegamon is a fusion...Imperialdramon is a jogress digivolution....Dukemon is a biomerge and so on.

But in the manga Digimon Adventure V-Tamer they labeled Omegamon as a Jogress, as we see in various games. I have no idea what Tentomon says this, and they never explained the difference. Besides, I think Omegamon is the only supossed example of “fusion”. Maybe the creators from xros wars were trying to seperate 01 and 02 evolution.
