Regrettably my leg extensions are in stasis, but my co-inventors are going ahead with their own design. Their leg extensions are being made by a company called Area 51 in the UK. This company just put up a web page this week announcing their own version. It is good to see that they have overcome the enormous difficulties in bringing any such invention to the market. Bravo, my hats off to them!

Imagine if you combine those legs to look like a raptors with one of those life like raptor costume would look bad ass.

man i was thinking the same shit
Totally gonna see some of those at Blizzcon
You would be surprised just how easy they are to walk in. A new friend just tried them on and was able to learn to walk in them in the time it takes to write this sentence. It surprised both of us, but it was also the newest design too. Unlike the traditional dry wall stilts, these give a person a chance to catch themselves the same way you do when you stumble with your own feet. Our goal is to make them as comfortable to wear as a pair of shoes. (albeit, very *tall* shoes)
We got our idea from the movie "Underworld" Patrick Tatopolis designed some super high end carbon fiber versions for the werewolves. The DVD came with a "making of" video that was really inspiring!
Thank you! I was so pleased with the spring loaded hooves. It took weeks to figure out how to keep the ankle supple and move when the foot was lifted. There is a nice compression when the foot contacts the ground.
The steel foot hidden by the hooves is an "H" shape 4 inches long by 7 inches wide. Any kind of foot can be made and spring loaded so it contacts with the ground fluidly.
I would be happy to make custom versions. That would be a lot of fun.
this one is different from the other's this one is easy to walk
wow! these are the most least stressful looking extensions i have ever seen. They look so easy! :) awesome job!
They are quite comfortable to walk in too. Thank you!
They are very comfortable to walk in. Check out the ones being sold by Area 51 in the UK!
Shame to hear that Weta won't be producing these for you KIm. I hope that you won't give up on the project to make these available for the costume community.
Don't give up hope. We are speaking with Fabrication studios to get a large production run going. This may well improve matters in the near future.
Kim this is AWESOME.
You should be really proud. That's awesome engineering.
AMAZING work. Wow!
Those are awesome. Best I've seen yet
That's really creative! You did a great job!
They are very comfortable and extremely stable to walk in. The weight is held in the feet, just like in high heel shoes. If you go up hill, the weight shifts to the top of the thigh.
Presently we are not selling the plans, just the completed sets. Fairly flat terrain is no problem. Steep inclines and stairs are a bit touchy, though. This set is built for ordinary walking and extended standing poses. We can do running legs based on the "cheetah legs" for amputees, but they are really hard to stand in.
It would be great to show off all the different styles we have built and our costumes. I think the "all terrain" part of the video is a must.
Brings back fond memories.
These are pretty awesome.
wow, those are crazy!!! They look like they are easy too walk in!!Amazing!!
@TwilightFire Thank you, it took 4 years to get them right. I am very pleased how they turned out.
that is the coolest thing ever. hope it get's into mass production so some ordinary german can enjoy this as well!
Best digitigrade stilt I've seen. The movement seems to suggest you are comfortable wearing it and walking in it. How long can you wear it without exhaustion, or is at all a concern? With the fur covering, it's like you're a totally different and believable creature! My mind twists to grasp it, and I love it when that happens! truly inspiring
These are just too cool.
The stretchy cord is a clever solution, no I had not thought of it. No special strength is required, but with use this will build up different muscles in your legs.
Wow, it is a pleasure to meet you! Your work on Farscape was inspired. I have tons of questions about your design. Warren Beaton (from Studio Kite) is here in New Zealand with me and says Hi!. He also asks if you are still with Neal Scanlin in Sydney. He said your design was as impressive in person as on screen.
God... those are the outstandingly beautiful! Just incredible work! You've mastered what so many have tried to perfect (or get working in the first place). I am very interested in ordering myself a custom pair. These appear to be horse legs (unguligrade rather than digitigrade) but would it be possible to reduce the size of the base slightly for werewolf type feet instead of hooves? I'm looking at your website right now and you have so much awesome sculpture work. Well done Kim! +fav +5 stars
Wow, amazing
Bravo,,great work
Not yet, but it certainly something I want to explore. Once these are in production, yes, that is one of the next things to build.
It is really easy and comfortable to walk in them.
Oh I do see the foot base hidden by the hoof now. The springs were definitely the ultimate trick to get that natural movement... No wonder these look so fluid! I could definitely work with a base that size. Thanks very much for your reply! This is the perfect solutions for the various costumes I've been needing true digitigrade stilts for. I promise, you'll definitely be hearing from me again once I get my money together... (currently a poor art college student).
AWESOME!!!
those are really cool
The "horsetail" hair style is really good too!!!
Oh, to respond to your other question in the prior post, the pair is going for about $750-$780 depending on if it is adapted for a particular costume. We also provide the hooves and fur as an extra.
You are completly correct. My co-inventors have solved this with their versions from Area 51 in the UK
wow, it even sounds cool.
We are still not in production yet with the leg extensions. In the past two months I was offered a job and have moved to New Zealand, so work on them has been slowed down. Presently, I am speaking with a fabrication studio here in Wellington about making the extensions. It is unlikely we can hit Halloween this year but we might make Christmas. If you like, I can email you immediately when there is more news on availability and price.
EFFING AWESOME
now thats pretty cool
@inventorgal even with bicycle springs, or torsion springs (a metal )or perhaps composite) bar that bends, you know, kinda like in those racing prosthetics for athletes without feet, but probably unlike those, it would not be the main support structure), or even bungee cords and pollies(sp?) ?
thats so cool!
wow thats absolutely awsome! 8D amazing work! C:
@TheOneTheyCallVi Yes, they are comfortable for the feet. We built them so that folks could walk easily in them for several hours
Would it be possible for you to make a video of you using the running feet? This design is miles ahead of most I have seen outside of the film industry and has really caught my attention. I wish I had the budget for something like this but I'm just a poor student at the moment. ;) Maybe some day.
Oh, I had not thought of that. I will have to get my friend with the camera to take more pictures next month. They are pretty easy to just stand and walk in. Running is hard, though.
You are correct, GregOrca's design has a fixed ankle joint, ours bends at both the knee and ankle. We were trying to keep the design as close to the leg as possible to fit under a costume and still be one-size-fits-all. It is a tough middle ground to find.
What is ILL Sause? I am afraid that we tried to get a spring loaded effect to make them bounce more, but could not get it to work. It added too much weight and made the sillouette too thick.
I am so going to get these one day.
Hello! I was viewing the information on your site, and I was wondering if there was a weight limit to these shoes. Also, about how much are you selling them for?
Is it possible to bend the ankle joint and make it act like a second knee? If it doesn't come standard like that could it be possible to mod it?
frigging awesome!! These are soo cool! Are they for sale at all?
Wow, that looks really good! How long can you approximately walk in those?
These are now sold from Weta Workshop in New Zealand, if you want to get some.
I want them Oo. Awesome!
I have just asked my web site person to upload a list of FAQs and so that will be there in the next day or so. They go for approximately $750-$780 depending on the type you need. They are pretty good on most terrain, but steep inclines and stairs are difficult.
I'd love one or two of these for some cosplays I'd like to make.
I was wondering if you can add 'balast' to the hooves. The sound lends itself to a chitenous creature but sounds a little hollow as a horse. But dang those are SWEET instruments!!
I fully expect to see at one set of these at this year's Renn Fair :-).
This set of extensions is built to be the right size for a lot of people. The ankle section will appear proportionally shorter on a taller person. Yes, the knees need to be more defined in this particular costume, but there is no way you can ask a gal to pad her behind. ;)
Fur and velcro for fast and easy application. It takes a minute to get the leg extensions on and then another two minutes to apply the fur. Pretty easy
Right now we will be offering just the steel and plastic "core" that costumes can be constructed on. As for additional animal feet, we would like to offer them, but we honestly do not know when that will be. We would like to offer a whole range, paws, claws, and hooves
Could you please send me your website? I would love to see your versions. Ours are a bit heavily done, but they are intended as a one-size-fits-all that people can personally modify.
Are there choices in feet? I see you have hooves on this one, but is it possible to make canine feet or bird feet and put them on instead when you build the leg?
Genious!
I am working to get the clip-clomp sound down. It only shows up on concrete and tile ground. Our next version will have a sound dampening rubber painted on the bottom.
Cool!
great for walking in the snow ? if balance is good and not slippery ?
How long did it take you to get the right length for the cables?
These are so awesome, how much would they cost to buy?
@SeanBradley Good news! My co-inventors have found a place that will manufacture the leg extensions. They are called Area 51 and are in the UK. If you are interested please contact them directly at legs@a51uk.com. They are trying for a February release date
how much is a pair of these? I would be interested
Wow !
Ok girl, I have posted it to any site that I know of as hoof related! perhaps we can finish the 'other' video you talked about soon... it will be so much fun!
I saw that and immediately thought of the AT-ST.

@MegatronSmurf Area 51 in the UK is now selling them! They are the co-inventors and have done a marvelous job!
I really need to have a pair of these incorporated into my next suit. x3
does this device allow one to run any faster? Still its pretty cool.
It is possible to get up to a trot. We are developing a special running foot that would allow running and dancing, but that won't be out for a while.
Wow.
how did you make the coverings for them??
Awesome :D

Okay, I was obsessed with this sort of thing for a decade as digigrade bipeds, like ostraches and most dinosaurs, tend to be extremely fast (I was especially inspired by the story of double-amputee, Oscar Pistorius, who's legs are semi-digigrade springs, and he IS fast on them). May need a HEEL rod with springs. I wonder how she would look with a chrome racing helmet, posing with a phased plasma-rifle with 40 watt range.
Is it possible to jump or run with these?
@caioenzo totally agree, looked good even before the fur :)
@inventorgal Alright :) Thank you so much for your help!
the ankle joint also flexes but it is hard to see with this simple of a walk.
incredible, also cosplay would be great for these
Dude. Totally ATST.
Thats pretty wicked :D I know alot would want some of them :)
I want to get this for my friend on her birthday! :3
@ig7157 This is one of the two videos that I made about our leg extensions before I was even hired by Weta Workshop. They did use this video to let people know the connection between the prior work and the work that was developed with them.
These are totally cool :) To all the people saying what a waste of time making this is, yes you're so productive complaining on an online video. If you don't like the state of something, or you feel you could make something useful, either do it yourself, or don't complain. Words of advice.
