Digging GIANT THUNDEREGGS at the Polka Dot Agate Mine!

Kate, Jim and Kava, along with Kate's parents, dig for GIGANTIC THUNDEREGGS at the Polka Dot Agate Mine near Madras, Oregon. The Canyon Rim Thunderegg Pit has only been open since 2017, when the massive thunder eggs were discovered as a backhoe was digging. The Canyon Rim thundereggs are unique, as they tend to be very large. Inside, they are filled with tubes, crystals, common opal, aragonite and even magnesite. So many beautiful rocks!

That was a fantastic video thank you. It was nice to see your parents out with you. Especially your dad. I remember from another video you said the slice cutter was his. It must of been fun for him to be back out checking out rocks, and watching someone else do the hard work. Once a rockhound, always a rockhound! Once when I was trying to explain thundereggs to a bunch of first graders, I said they were formed when a volcano burped. I figured the teacher could explain better than I could.

LOL, I told my mom everyone on YT thinks she's a real rockhound - she thinks it's hilarious, because when my dad was actively doing it, he dragged her all over these desolate backwater places (looking for fossils, for instance) and she HATED it. But she sure enjoyed the thundereggs.

Hi Katy, Hope you are well. Yes I found something. I don't like making a big story out of nothing, but it turns out my visit to the mine was a little more than I expected. It was my first time visiting any type of rock shop. So, here you go. They have a lot more than just thundereggs there, which I didn't know, and after seeing the heaps of japers I passed on digging for thundereggs and just bought jaspers. Now I regret not digging for at least one especially after seeing the photos people are posting of theirs. Guess I'll have to go back.

Do they have a website? Like, what are their hours, how much do they charge, what's their fee schedule, etc etc...? You said it could cost you $1000? Do they charge by the pound? What's the actual deal?

What is the difference between these thundereggs and the geodes we find in the Midwest around Keokuk Iowa?

  • @KatyDidRocks

I don't know too much about the geology in Iowa, but the thundereggs are formed in rhyolite gas pockets. Geodes are hollow and lined with crystals - most thundereggs from the area are filled solid with agate and other material. The Canyon Rim thunderegg beds has unusually large eggs that often are hollow and filled with strange tubes and bubbles - super fun! I want to go hunt geodes someday.

Nope! It’s free to dig you just pay by the pound for what you take home.

The eggs are $2/pound, which seems very cheap but adds up quickly when they are so large. The polka dot agate is $5/pound - the mine currently is not open to the public, but they have a big selection you can buy.

You can find the Polka Dot Agate Mine by Googling it. Price at the moment is $2:lb. for thunder eggs, $5/lb. for the agate. They are great folks!

@@dpmcfarland21 thank you 🙏 in my local river I find an assortment of rocks...carnelian, calcedony, jasper and agate...but all the agate seems to have skin on it and 99% of the time I find it has that black/grey 'glue' type cement that is on Thunder Eggs 🤔

  • @KatyDidRocks

Nope, although it would be cool! Some agates are formed in a similar way to thundereggs, though. Montana agates, for instance, are also formed inside gas pockets from a lava flow; thundereggs are from gas pockets in rhyolite. Depending on the geology where you live, the agates may have formed the same way.
