FOR ALL INSTRUMENTS - Welcome to DIGGING DEEPER. In video #24, Jeff finally breaks down and talks some about jazz vocabulary. We didn't want these videos to devolve into "here's a cool lick" every week. That is NOT "Digging Deeper" at all. So, here we have a great overarching concept (7th to 3rd resolution), and YES, some vocabulary based on it. Licks!! Yahoo!!

    Hi Jeff...more jazz nuggets!!! I hear this resolution all the time but now, thanks to you, I know how it works. Like the idea of just practicing in a few keys. Makes the concept more attainable.

    Yup, just work on two or three keys at MOST to begin with. It's not about "collecting all 12 keys," it's about really KNOWING what the thing is (the lick, the melodic device, the sound, the tune). Getting working in all 12 keys too quickly actually slows us down. Unless, of course, you are a grad student studying jazz. Then, you need to do EVERYTHING in all 15 keys (I'll be covering the 3 keys from a parallel universe in an upcoming video 8-)

    This video goes well with the Jazz DNA video. You can practice the 7th going to the 3rd on the ii, V7, and also the 7th going to the 3rd and the 3rd going to the 7th on V7, I.

    Very good point! That "7th to 3rd resolution" is EVERYTHING. Once we have that in our ears, all the "fancier stuff" just begins to flow from there. So glad you are checking it all out!

    Absolutely right. Really, ALL of this stuff ends up connecting eventually. I just try to do my best to pull is apart into simple little pieces that still stand on their own. Glad you saw that connection!

    Hi, Jeff. Should the 3rd that the flat-7 resolves to, always fall/be ON the beat? Is that what makes the sound more comprehensive to the ear? Great video as always. I'm really starting to understand all of this. Of course, physically doing al of this is another thing entirely, but I'm more excited about understanding what's taking place theoretically. Thanks again -- Chick

    You know, the rhythm is variable. ON the beat is great, but resolving early, perhaps on the + of 4 is excellent as well. I'm happy that this stuff is falling in to place for you. I'm someone who is intrigued by the theory and the science of it all as well, so that is cool. THAT SAID, all this theory is all there so that we can make better MUSIC. If you haven't already, please jump in to a Free 30 Day Limited access to JazzWire. I would love to work together with you in a more meaningful (and not too expensive) way. With the Free 30 Day Trial, you’ll see what we're doing behind the wall! You'll be inside in about 20 seconds, no credit card required. app.jazzwire.net/free-trial. These videos are great, but they are a SHADOW compared to the real work and we can do together!

    @@JeffAntoniukEducator I can't wait. I DO plan on participating. BTW, was pleased to learn a few of you guys are into the Fusion like I am. Was surprised to received the email from Matt featuring Fusion Jazz. I've always listened to it, but it's rare to find any info on the subject, as far a musicianship is concerned-- esp. theory and harmony. Not getting ahead of myself, but it's great to know that you dig the Fusion, as well. Thanks for the response. Peace

    @@michaeldean9338 I can't wait to get going with you inside www.JazzWire.net. You ask some great questions about fusion vs. traditional swing, and we can get talking about this a LOT with myself and the other faculty, but also with the hundreds of JazzWire participants who are really IN to these styles. I'll look forward to seeing you inside.

    Wasn't it Scofield who was questioning the fact that if he played a few licks to often that he totally try to change his style..."don't get burned by Licks, Don't play with fire" yu have to be able to improvise your Licks otherwise your "xxxed"

    Hi Jeff, might not get an answer due to the time date of this video release. But how would you apply this to tertian harmony? Still include the 7th before landing on the 3rd? I'm thinking more along the lines of RnB, Soul, Pop music. You are always an inspiration. Thank you.

  • @JeffAntoniukEducator

    @JeffAntoniukEducator

    Well, Tertian Harmony is harmony based on 3rds, which is most Jazz, RnB, Soul Pop and everything else. Non-tertian harmony is pretty rare, frankly. So, this video is 110% regarding tertian harmony, and the 7th and 3rd resolutions that define it. Maybe there is another question lurking here . . . ?
