Digging a Confederate Soldier's Privy - Deep Glass and War Relics
Ойын-сауық
For those who follow this channel, you've seen our more recent videos where we've been metal detecting at a Confederate Plantation. Well, we decided we'd try to locate the privy and dig some old 1800s bottles. Well, we find 2 privies in this video and we pulled out a bunch of glass and many relics. While Jason and I were busy in the hole, everyone else was popping relics out of the ground left and right. This is going to be a two part episode so make sure you subscribe and click the bell. I'll have part 2 uploaded within the week.

1853 Confederate soldier? If I remember history correctly, and I do, there was no Confederacy or Confederate military until 1861. Both my great-grandfathers enlisted in 1861.

Good video, you found some nice old stuff. I've always found them to be rock or wood whenever I have dug them..
Nice digs and congrats on your first 19th century medical! Make you up a couple steel probes, aside from helping you find privies, they will help you determine which way the privy goes so you don't have to tunnel.
I'm glad you are happy and not down in the dumper ha ha

Yeah, best to widen those holes I suppose. You wouldn't want to be remembered as that guy killed in a vintage pooper collapse! lol Neat finds but I don't think anyone would be able to convince me to dig a privy regardless of what treasures might be there. Looks like everyone is having a good time, I was going to mention that the little bottle wasn't made in Savanah that's just the advertisement on the bottle, it was made somewhere else for that company
What is a "breast plate"? Indian decoration, sash pin for a solider... I tried googling but couldn't find info. Love when Mom says "Those are your new shoes!" And the kid quietly responds "I'll clean them..." 😂

Thanks man. A breast plate was worn by union soldiers during the Civil War.
I recently found a dump nearby to me that nobody knows about, so far all the bottles I've found have been 1910-30s. I've only dug around for about 15 minutes there too

Looks like that lock plate came off a union lock box. May be off stagecoach lock bo
That's a pressed glass bottle from the late 1800s. The lip on it is part of the pressing. If the lip had been applied separately, then it would probably be pre 1850.

@@ZachByrd Happy to help. I became interested in bottles when I wanted to find a good one to build a ship in a bottle. A really old landfill will often have old unbroken bottles near the surface because they didn't have bull dozers or heavy machines to to do the work back then. Old ghost towns out west, like abandoned mining towns, usually have a place like that somewhere. But most old towns in any area usually have such a place like that.. I found one near Marinett by asking my grandfather if he remembered one. And he did. He used to poke around in it as a boy. Good luck.

That druggist bottle is most likely 1900 to 1912.
If you hit clay in the privy ya shoulda dug past it..that was more than likely a cap and good glass could be underneath the clay
@ZachByrd
3 жыл бұрын
Once we hit the clay, we dug another 2 feet and hit it with the probe and nothing.
Is that centuries old poop inside the privy? or just plain old soil?
Hey brother... not wanting to rain on the parade, but the patent date on an item is not the date that it was made. Do you know how to tell if a bottle is hand blown or machine made? That's really the only way to date it unless you know the start/stop dates of a certain variant
@ZachByrd
3 жыл бұрын
I usually go by the seam that runs the side of the bottle. I'll admit, I don't know near as much about bottles as I do civil war relics.
Is there any odor from the old privy in there?

1853 ? The Confederacy wasn't formed until 1861. There was fighting On the missouri-kansas Border in the 1850s prior to the Civil War but they were considered Border Ruffians not Confederate

To be historically accurate the confederacy did not exist in 1853. Did you mean 1863?

No. I mean that the house was built pre civil war and the owner would go on to fight for the confederate army.

Why y’all wanna dig in the sh*tter? Wasn’t there just 💩 in there????
This is one of the most disappointing click bait titles ever. I thought I was going to see rare 1850s pontiled bottles, but once they dug up the lock I realized where the title came from. I would have been happy to watch this video as an average dig on a property, but the title made me too disappointed to enjoy it. I in general dislike how you tube forces everyone to make click bait titles just to get views.
