    I made lots of (good and thick) absorbers for my home studio a few years ago... I'm guessing I made too many, because I now have a totally dead room (which is still way better than the situation before, but still not exactly what I intended to do). And I still have some seriously troubled frequencies in the bass area. I've never played my synths in our library, but I sure as hell sent my daughter (who plays the cello) to practice there because hey, our extensive book collection is a superb diffusor system. :)

    I have a great-sounding upright piano sitting about 8 inches from a wall. Would putting 1) nothing, 2) broadband absorbers, or 3) diffusors between the wall and piano result in a better sound in the room? I typically pull the piano out from the wall and mic it on the back, when I record it.

  • @GIKAcousticsLLC

    @GIKAcousticsLLC

    That really depends on the entire room. By pulling the piano away from the wall you will get less low-mid/bass buildup, however the overall sound will greatly depend on how large the space is and how it's treated.

    How much absorption do the combo diffusers provide? I need to convert a small bedroom to a guitar recording studio and would love to be able to crank it to 11 without being obnoxious to others in the house. Is that feasible without deadening the room completely?

    You need to look at soundproofing principles and techniques. But there is really nothing you can do with a rental unit ceiling that is not destructive.

    Why is everyone only concerned about studio rooms? There is a huge market for residential units for which noone seems to understand there is a big need for sound absorbing

    Well because each can cost from $100 to multiple thousand $ per panel, each audio space/section needs multiple for each wall, ceiling and floor treatment. I made my own but it’s not cheap, so far it cost me $200 and it’s only half of the room. If you are not make of money or audio does not earn you money, it’s very expensive to treat your room. Not only that you have to test to see where to put the panels, put again, test again…
