Difficult Trailer Loading

Jodie contacted me about a month ago and said she was having a hard time trailer loading her horse(Boss). We went to visit her to help her and see if we could help her work through the issues she was having. What we found was not all a trailer loading problem but several issues that were more of a disrespect problem with Boss. We found that he was very pushy and was not responding well to what she was wanting. The video shows some of the issues and also the methods we used to get Jodie to become a leader for her horse. Enjoy the video and thanks to Jodie for allowing us to work with her and Boss

I like how you did lots before the trailer. I always say trailer problems are seldom about the trailer. All the good ground work makes the ride better too.

Good job, at least this video shows what really happens when u load a horse that shows real resistance. It takes as long as it takes and I'm sure it took longer than what the video shows.

Just stumbled across this video and thought I would chime in.This horse has a good disposition. I saw no meanness in him. .Maybe his resistance is fear based. At first I thought he was hanging up in the stall due to being buddy sour but since he didn't call to his stall mate I felt he may have been afraid to leave the stall. When leaving the stall each time, he looked worried. Later he appeared to be afraid to back out of the trailer. Do I see Arab in this horse? If so, many Arabs are fearful. If the owner can get control of his feet, she will get control of his mind and he will regard her as his leader. This horse really needs a leader. Mike Henrie you are a really good horseman. The trainer I follow on KZread doesn't like the rope shaking thing especially when there is a heavy metal clasp/hook on the lead rope. He thinks rope shaking annoys the horse more than trains the horse. He advocates backing the horse back with a tap to the chest with a short crop. But,wow, you controlled this horse really well and in so doing you were able to control his mind. I really liked the way you handled this horse.

In my experience, almost all problems are fear based. Most problems are just the horse resorting to survival instincts.

Definitely no Arab in this horse. He's all quarter horse. His issues aren't fear as much as disrespect. He was a bit claustrophobic with the trailer at first so we just got him to where he could rest and relax inside. Learning how to be a good leader is key. Thanks for your comments.

Very stressful watching the horse backing out, 1. some hay on the floor would have made the trailer less dark and dangerous. 2. A trailer that he could turn in would be less frightening to exit frontwards. Beautiful horse

Thanks for your comments. I don't turn my horses around in trailers and bring them out forward. I've seen to many people get smashed by the horse or by a divider. Turning around in a trailer often binds them up and causes them to rush. He also now backs out very quiet now he's figured out the step down.

8:01-8:23ish I was REALLY into what you were saying about the type, but the Wind was too much against the Microphone I couldn’t hear everything. What’s the name of the bit she was using and why did you recommend something else to her? And what did you recommend she use instead? I think u said ? Snaffle. I am a new rider and plan to purchase a shapely horse one day

She’s using a bit that has been developed for the finished horse and a light experienced hand can use effectively. If you don’t know what this all means then you need an instructor. A KZread video is not going to prepare you for dealing with a horse. Don’t use the term correction bit. There is no such thing.

Sorry about the wind on this one. I did recommend an oring snaffle bit for this horse. He is very green and sensitive and needed to learn to be soft latteraly. The bit she was using was pretty harsh and I don't believe a horse needs anything to control him. If you do the job correctly you should be able to ride your horse with anything or nothing:)

Am I the only one seeing this horse as dead lame, on top of being overfed and underworked ? All this horsemanship stuff can be done on a healthy horse, but this stuff here is not very ethical. Think of all the people watching and thinking they can do the same. Bring the vet in first.

He's a great and talented horse that just needed some direction. Those who want to criticize really don't have to watch. You do your thing and I'll do mine and that's just fine.
