I’m 77 years old. Two months ago, I had a sudden onset of wet macular degeneration in my left eye. Suddenly, straight lines looked wavy and there were other visual distortions. A retina specialist gave me anti-vegf shots in my eye June 4 and July 3, 2024, and I’ll go in for another shot Aug. 2. The wavy distortions have improved a lot, but I continue to see objects as larger with my left eye than with my “good” eye. I can read better with either eye alone than with both eyes together: I experience a kind of double vision when I look at a page with both eyes. This problem, of course, is also distracting in other situations like computer work and, to some extent, driving. I’m afraid that my left macula has in some way become permanently misshaped. I’m going to ask my retina specialist about the possibility of my getting some kind of corrective lens like the Shaw lens to try to help with this problem. If both eyes saw everything as the same size, binocular vision ought to be better even if the vision with my left eye continues to be slightly wavy.

This requires more chat with your ophthalmologist if you haven’t already. Making changes to the glasses is a bit of a no no here due to cost and time. As the macula heals and no longer has edema that hyperopic shift decreases and so does the magnification. It’s really a case of best to wait it out, unless funds are no object of course… then by all means, have a pair made that calculates the magnification delta for best optics for the interim :)

So prior to prescription glasses, vision on my left eye is blurrier whereas my right eye is relatively clear (i.e., anisometropia) So I got the following prescription: Right eye SPH = -0.25 Left eye SPH = -1.50 Left eye CYL = -0.25 Left eye AXIS = 100 I also got multifocal lenses, so reading is embedded into the lenses: Right eye Add = +1.25 Left eye Add = +1.25. Now, with this prescription, my vision is much clear when I look through the glasses with both eyes. However, my vision on my left eye is now much more clearer than that on right eye. It is as if my left eye (which is the bad one) has now been corrected to near-perfectness that it is now better than my right eye. I feel also a slight strain and fatigue on my right eye. Is that normal? Or should I get my right eye re-checked? Or get different prescriptions? Or is it just one of the problems one has to face with anisometropia?

I really appreciated your video. I've been experiencing alot of double vision and other visual disturbances to the point I was thinking about an eye patch. The optometrist didnt really mention any other options just that eventually glasses wouldnt work. My prescription is "OD SPH -4.25 CYL-1.00 axis 17, OS SPH -0.50 CYL -1.50 axis 30" Next time I'm going in to get glasses I'll try to go to a smaller shop.

That’s quite the difference for sure! If you can’t find someone familiar with iseikonic lenses look up SHAW lenses and local providers. These lenses are dummy proof and basically run the calcs I run when designing my own in house lenses to create the needed binocular balance. 🥂🙌🏻. At the very least you’ll at least have an option then!

Hello. I have -2 cyl with 90 deg in right eyes and -1 cyl with 90 deg in left eye. I see things in slanted way. I got my prescription 2 months ago. When I take off my glasses , I see slant in opposite direction. Will this slant go away by constantly using specs… ?

I just got a new prescription and for the first time I have power in my right eye, but it's opposite of my left eye. My right eye is -0.50 and my left is +0.25. I'm worried about how these glasses are going to feel having different corrections in each eye. I've always had just a little power in my left eye and a moderate astigmatism correction in both eyes as well as reading for both eyes. I hope I'm able to adjust to this new weird prescription when I pick my glasses up.

I'm so depressed. Went from what i thought was perfect vision to +0.25 L, - 2.25 R. Got some glasses and it's horrendous. I feel sick and dizzy and blurry with headache all the time. Please advise.

That’s a big jump from nothing, and the lenses really need to be designed with that in mind. The adaptation period is going to be tough regardless, but iseikonic lenses are a huge help!

I have my right eye completely blurred, and the other is fine. My old doctor used to prescribe me the same power for both eyes, but recently, new doctor prescribed +0 .50 in right and -0.50 in left. So which prescription should I use?

You don’t have much choice in the matter. What’s current and Rx’d should be what’s correct. Ask your prescribing doctor if you’re concerned to be certain 😎

I have anisometropia but turned into Amblyopia. So we take the prescription in my right eye my good and use it for my left so it moves with my right.

Iseikonic lens designs like I discuss here would definitely be benficial with overall comfort of wear in these powers :)

My right eye glass need+7 and left +.50 .but my vision got blurry and crossed when i try to read or focus(not all the time). after explaining it to my doctor he decreased my right eye glass power several times. And now it is+4. But it didn't help. I've been suffering for years.my studies hampered a lot.i am insecure. I feel like nobody understands my problem. I have board exam starting from next month. I am so anxious. CAN U PLEASE TELL ME WHAT COULD BE THE SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM?

Sorry for the delay on getting back to you. Missed this one somehow. They imbalance is quite a lot and contact lenses will give you much more comfortable vision in this instance. It can be balanced in glasses but you need a really good optician that understands power imbalances and how to manipulate the lenses. Nearly a lost art these days.

Hi, Doctor Eye Health and this channel are my go to for eye/glasses related info. Great content! Do you think a difference of 0.25 in myopia (-5, - 5.25) should get a different prescription for the weaker eye or should it be undercorrected and kept the same as the sharper eye?

The difference there is minimal enough to not cause any issues with image size, the brain can fuse that easily with no problems basically 😁. Now, that said, a good optometrist will balance for best binocular (both eyes) acuity when creating the prescription, and rarely will it ever be the same in both eyes, not many symmetrical people and eyes out there 🙂 Also thank you for the kind words! Doctor eye health is a great channel (and great person!) for sure!

We generally don’t see that with 180 cyl if it’s correct rx. Not to say she’s wrong. But sounds like kicking the can down the road. It should be sharper than your vision without glasses but feeling “wierd” I would expect. Clarity should be there. We’re not talking about a first time wear with 2+ diopters of cyl and plus power here

Hello Sir, I'm currently being treated (visual therapy) for suppression and convergency issues, but it hasn't seemed to work much over the past 10 weeks. My contact lens prescription are different, but I've been told they are close. However, I've recently noticed that when I close one eye and then the other, the size difference of the image is quite noticeable. I have constant eye strain (headaches, light sensitivity and trouble focusing/reading without needing to look away). Can this aniseikonia possibly be the issue even though the prescription difference is subtle? If it is a possibility, does every optometrist treat for this or is there a specialist in Houston that does? Thanks in advance :)

Hi Jay! Sorry for the delayed reply, I missed the notification, so sorry! For most a minimal difference in prescription won't cause that, and a neuro workup may be needed (hopefully nothing like that, but you just never know!) I would definitely start with an optometrist that specializes in accommodative strain and vision therapy :), sounds like it could very well be related more to accommodative spasms or some other mechanism to do with near convergence and magnification. In contact lenses you won't experience the aneiso issues that are often found in glasses (in fact in extreme cases the answer is to move to contacts). Hope this helps some! :)

I have just checked my eyes and all my almost 40 years I kind of using my right eye :O Left eye: Sph +1.0 Cyl -2.5 x 140 and Right eye: Sph (0) Cyl -0.5 x 40 (2 difference in cylinder). I ordered and worn them for two weeks and even tho things become sharp and HD :D but still feel discomfort (things including the ground seem farther and alignments distorted). I checked my eye and the glass in two different places and both measurements are correct. I decided to adopt them but, I used to be fine without glasses, mainly due to the right eye of course. And now, when I remove them for a while, my left eye feels sluggish and feels dizzy. So i am afraid that wearing them might lose my normal state without glass. So should I keep wearing them? change them or since i am fine without it, leave them?

Wearing them more will improve both comfort and clarity of vision. The lag when you’re not wearing them was always there before, but now you notice the difference with the glasses letting everything work together properly. They wit. Make your eyes or sight worse, wear them. 😎

I have a difference of two diopters between my eyes. Left eye is perfect and right eye is +2. I struggle with headaches, eye strain and always feel unbalanced. I've yet to get glasses that fix the issue. The ones I wear currently help a bit but I always feel wierd wearing them. My optometrist just wants to give me eyezen glasses for eye strain. I think I need to try find a place that makes these special lenses you talk about.

yes, eyezen isn't gonna cut it, all that's going to do is give you a small boost at the bottom of th elens to make mobile phone use and such easier. Shaw lenses are going to be the easiest to search for. I don't work with them and do my own iseikonic designs, so I'm sure there are others out there that do the same.... but that's exceedingly hard to track down. If you don't have any luck I'm happy to make a set of lenses for you, those lower powers are easy enough to do remotely if you choose to :)

Hi, great video and possibly a solution for a problem I've struggled with for years. I'm a bit long-sighted in my left eye (+0.5 cyl -1.25) and short-sighted in my right (-0.5 cyl -0.75). I've always struggled with glasses and end up not wearing them but they're becoming more of a necessity as I'm getting older. Do you think this could be enough of a difference to cause issues with the different image sizes?

Not as dramatic as some but it’s right on the edge of where we start to see it appear as discomfort when wearing glasses. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to have a set of lenses with a proper iseikonic design to balance image size :)

My right eye was always plano in the past. I'm very sensitive when it comes to glasses and I'm worried that these aren't going to feel right. I'm picking them up next week and just praying they're okay.

It’s all about balancing power and magnification effects. In your case there is almost 0 imbalance between the eyes prescriptions now. You’ll be just fine. If anything better than before 😎

For starters, not a dr. Let’s keep that clear. 😎😂. On to what you actually asked! In this case your eyes work well for one to be super sharp at a distance and one to be relatively good at a distance but very good and sharp within arms length. Even for corrective surgery in older presbyopic people with no accommodation you will often find this used as an alternative to needing bifocals for most things. However, wearing the corrective glasses will benefit both depth perception as well as overall comfort of vision and I agree with your doc to wear the glasses, and ideally full time. It is going to hurt nothing, and only benefit. At minimum you would want to wear these when doing any tasks such as driving where the added depth perception is beneficial!

Within a half diopter for most. This video is about larger statistical deviations of a diopter or more. The vast majority of RX out there are within 0.25-0.50 difference in each eye (read: not enough to affect comfort and stereopsis in most cases) when comparing spherical equivalent or effective powers 😁

No, that’s a different ball game entirely and is called amblyopia. For the average rx there simply isn’t enough of a difference for their to be a perception issue and the brain can handle superimposing the images provided perfectly fine. Larger differences create magnification imbalance that the brain can’t handle well and leads to a weird version of double vision and/or headaches depending on the differences.

I have -1 sph on right eye and i have my left eye normal. I see things clearly even without my glasses. Should i wear it regularly

I am nearsighted (-1.75 L, -4.25 R) and also got astigmatism (-2 in both eyes), so there is a difference of 2.5 diopters in both eyes. As you can see, I really need correction to see better, but using glasses causes me a lot of headaches; therefore, I prefer not using them; however, I started realizing that without correction my brain only gets the images from my left eye, but sometimes there is a battle between both eyes trying to focus. Do you think there is a big difference in the prescription? Do you think that contact lenses can remove the headaches?

7D is pretty big, but generally doable. I would look specifically to Shaw lenses in this case, and made for best comfort of vision, it ain't gonna be a pretty set of lenses.

No, it's a special lens design to balance anisometropia! 😁 Dr Shaw has gone to great lengths to incorporate the actual lens design algorithm and needed changes to the lens blank itself taking what we can do manually a step further. Nothing else out there quite like it, but the differences from manual tweaks to his designs really show themselves in cases like yours. They're not the prettiest looking lenses, but they'll provide the best visual experience you can possibly have in glasses 😁

I've been to my opticians a few times because my right eye gets on my nerves. When I'm doing detailed work, photo editing or especially during low light or driving at night it seems blurry to me. It turns out I have a VERY mild astigmatism ( SPH +0.50 CYL -0.75 x 125 ). My left eye is practically plano and picks up the slack, but the imbalance irritates me. I was told it's a 'mixed' astigmatism (whatever that is) and that I can try glasses if I wish. Should I bother?

I have a huge difference in both my eyes my doctor's always gave me the same prescription both eyes to balance for the dominant eye but now it is causing me headaches

That's an interesting prescribing choice 🤔. At any rate there are lenses specifically designed to deal with exceptionally large differences. Cosmetics are sacrificed, but they do work magic in some cases. Look up Shaw lenses 😁

@@ThatGlassesGuy03 thanks I will I just went and bought lots of glasses from I buy direct online to try to figure out my eye prescription myself my right eye is a -5.00 and my left eye is a -19 I'm going to check out the website you suggested I also have congenital thyroidism so I don't know if that contribute to eye problems or not I just want my headaches to stop I get headaches everyday going on four years and it's torture

Its difficult to go about it that way. You can throw a LOT of minus in the eyes and accomodate right through it, especially when younger. I would also say with THAT big of a difference (assuming correct), nothing will provide the comfort of vision that contacts will. :)

@@dealiacotton9856 so... thats a great video topic... for starters there are more measurements than. Simple pd that go into making precision eyewear. As for when it matters... any and all freeform or digital designs. Any aspheric design. And conventional designs when deviation induces prism (a little thing we call Martin's rule.. which in the case of even your -5 would be roughly 0.5D of induced prism for every millimeter of error. Compounded by other fitting errors such as not compensating for vertex, tilt, panto, and other important measures.

I have -3.5 in left eye and 0 in right eye.i have just started wearing glasses and I cant focus on study and remember things and cant ride bikes properly i feel panicked. Ifeel retarded while studying and mind feels heavy. Is it due to high difference. Should i go for contacts or special glasses.

Could be a lot going on there, but yes at that difference it can be harder to adapt and get both eyes working together well (except in case of amblyopia where one eye is surpressed). Contacts or isekonic lenses could definitely help if amblyopia or another medical issue isn't at play :)

@@nabinrawat2991thata best to discuss with your OD/OMD, but typically in that scenario no. :) the right eye having no power should not be causing blur either. Definitely get the glasses checked out and discuss iesekonic lenses with whomever you purchased from :)

20/20 vision can be achieved in each eye, however one eye sees everything further away than the other, that is the problem.

Balancing magnification and increasing comfort of vision. 20/20 by definition implies both eyes see equally as sharp st 20'. The difference is the superimposed image from the size of the image causing more strain and other related issues compounded by changing prism at a higher rate in each eye off axis. 🙃. Yup, lots of problems to fix totally irrelevant to achieved visual acuity lines 😁
