For anyone watching this that is interested in the Elizabeth Bradley kits. They use 10 mesh interlock canvas with printed designs. To get proper coverage they recommend Victorian cross stitch throughout. Basically it’s just cross stitch however unlike cross stitch on Aida you complete each full cross before going on to the next. If you do a tent stitch either with half cross, continental or basket weave the coverage on the front side of the canvas will be insufficient using EB yarn (same is true of Appleton, however with Paternayan/Colonial you can get decent coverage on 10 mesh with basic tent stitch). In the EB kits they provide enough of their own yarn for the project to be done in full cross stitch. The Kirk and Bradley series however is kitted more like traditional needlepoint presumably supplying enough yarn for continental stitch. It’s unlikely you would employ basketweave much in these types of painterly canvases except where there is background. Many designs are quite full and in those cases virtually no background exists to require basketweave. I personally have found it easier to use charts from needlepoint books for this type of painterly stitching. This leaves you with an exact replica of the designer’s piece rather than making judgment calls on the canvas. You also have the freedom to change mesh size etc. Downside is that you have to be comfortable with counting. US needle pointers it appears favor simpler designs where the stitches themselves are a focal point in which case hand painted or screen printed canvases are a must. For me it would be impossible to count from a chart and think about applying a stitch pattern. Really these are two very different styles of needlepoint, tapestry like projects versus those that showcase stitch patterns. Thank you for such an excellent video.

Hi Ellen, I'm in the Asheville, NC area which doesn't seem to have much in the way of Needlepoint shops. I bought a Dimensions Kit called Bouquet on Black from Amazon, and thought I'd learn needlepoint. It's a beautiful kit. I've done cross stitch in the past & I'm a knitter. I absolutely love Kaffe Fassett's designs & wanted to give needlepoint a try. I can't believe the prices of canvas's that I see on needlepoint sites. I have a few of Kaffe's books so I'll be using blank canvas's in the future. I'd like to know more about drawing a grid, and how many threads do you use & which thread? Kaffe seems to nearly always use Appleton yarn since he's in England. As long as all my stitches are headed in the same direction, what difference does it make if it's a tent, basketweave, or continental stitch? I'm left handed so I'm sure everything is oriented the opposite of what I'd prefer. Also seeing the painted design on the canvas is difficult unless there's something white behind the canvas. Do you have a strategy for that? I'm 63 so I have to wear readers to see the grid well. I have it on a frame but I think I'll take it off so it's easier to stitch. Any thoughts on that?

This was very helpful information. I wish I would have known some of this before getting a printed canvas- you were spot on- it is very Hard for a new stitcher.

I'm so glad that you found the info helpful, Lauren. 🥰 If you have the wherewithal to set your printed canvas aside for a bit and try a stitch painted piece, you might find getting extra stitching experience helpful. XOXO!!

Great information! If you would put a piece of white paper behind a canvas we’d be able to see it much better.

Can a counted cross stitch picture be done on in needlepoint? Being from New Mexico, I have beautiful Southwestern Indian counted cross stitch patterns. Can I try to paint the design on the needlepoint canvas or count the stitches on plain 13 or 18 inch standard canvas? I would use the basket weave or two stitch.

Hi Jacque Thank you for watching. And yes - you can definitely stitch a counted cross stitch pattern on mono canvas, as long as the chart includes full cross stitches. If your chart uses half stitches, you'll want to use Penelope canvas instead. Hope this helps... 😊
