Difference between Internal and External SAMADHI States | Sri Ramana Maharshi

"External samadhi is stillness while witnessing the world, without reacting to it from within. The external samadhi is like a still sea, and the internal samadhi like a steady flame. Sahaja samadhi is the identity of the flame with the ocean." ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi

About Sri Ramana Maharshi:
Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi (Venkataraman Iyer, 1879 - 1950) was a great sage and enlightened guru who lived in Tiruvannamalai, near the holy hill Arunachala in south India. He went there shortly after his unexpected, spontaneous and sudden enlightenment, at the young age of 16. He lived there until his Mahasamadhi (final conscious release from the body at death) on April 14, 1950, at the age of 71. Dr. Carl G. Jung, the world famous psychologist, once said of him: “In all of India, he is the whitest spot in a white space.”. Sri Ramana Maharshi is one of the most renowned spiritual gurus of India.

Bhagwan Ramana has his own original writings. . Arunachal stuti panchkam and Updesha Saram, Atma Vidya, Ulludu Narpadu etc, make content from these. "If one wants to be saved, one is given the following true and essential advice: just as the tortoise draws all its five limbs within its shell, so one should draw the five senses within and turn one’s mind Selfward. This alone is happiness." Guru Vachaka kovai

Question: Is there a difference between INTERNAL and EXTERNAL SAMADHI. MASTER: Yes, there is. EXTERNAL SAMADHI is stillness while witnessing the world, without reacting to it from within. The EXTERNAL SAMADHI is like a still Sea, and the INTERNAL SAMADHI like a Steady flame. SAHAJA SAMADHI is the identity of the flame with the Ocean. Question. Does one lose his body-Consciousness in Samadhi? If so, how Can there be a difference? Master: What is body-Consciousness ? Analyse it, there must be a body and consciousness (awareness) limited to it which, together make up to body-consciousness. These must lie in another consciousness which is absolute and unaffected. Hold to it. THAT IS SAMADHI. It exists when there is no body-Consciousness because it transcends the latter; it also exists when there is the body-Consciousness. So it is always there. What does it matter whether the body is lost or retained? When lost, it is the INTERNAL SAMADHI. When retained it is EXTERNAL SAMADHI. That is all, Question: But the mind does not sink into Samdhi even for a Second. Master: A Strong Conviction is necessary that I am the self, transcending the mind and the phenomena. Question: Nevertheless, the mind proves to be like a Cork at my attempts to sink it. Master: What does it matter if the mind is active? It is So, after all, on the Substratum of the Self. Hold to the Self even during the mental activities. Question: I cannot go within Sufficiently deep. Master: It is wrong to Say So. Where are you now, if not in the Self? Where Should you go? All that is necessary is the Stern belief (Strong Conviction) that you are the Self. Say rather that the Other activities throw a veil on you. Question: Is there any harm in my Continuing Japa (mental repetition of a divine name or mantra) in this manner or is it essential that I should only do the bare 'who am I' enquiry? Master: No, you can trace the root of any thought or japa Or mantra and Continue to do so until you have an answer to your query. That is in itself meditation in the right direction leading you to the same goal as the 'who am I'? inquiry. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
