According to my limited knowledge and understanding, a 32 bit operating system is the one which can be installed on a 32 bit hardware architecture and on 64 bit hardware architecture. But a 64 bit operating system can only be installed on 64 bit hardware architecture. A 32 bit hardware architecture actually means a CPU of the motherboard which has 32 registers and 64 bit hardware architecture means a CPU of the motherboard which has 64 registers.
