I live in Denmark and have long wanted to hear Dieterich Buxtehude but fortunately today managed to hear his works. Among the many who admired and met him were Handel, Telemann and Bach! I am delighted I have finally managed to listen to his great works! Sadly no one ever plays his music and sadder still he largely remains unknown! Such a injustice to a Composer who deserves more!

The architectural beauty of these Sonatas is astonishing. I have often listened to Buxtehude's magnificent organ works, but I clearly should spend more time with his music for strings, as well as his Cantatas. An incredible genius. Many thanks for sharing!

Although best known these days as a keyboard composer, Buxtehude's string writing is of the highest order. In addition to the present recordings, Musica Antiqua Köln recorded some also - once again phenomenal performances.

I'm pleased to say I have never had the nasty advertising experiences on youtube referred to by many users. I don't know what determines this. I listen in UK, France, Switzerland and Spain - always with uninterrupted pleasure. I have never heard these sonatas before and they provide a perfect background to convalescence from a nasty cold. That is probably rather insulting to them but I feel music serves many purposes.

It's nice to hear about listening experiences had in civilized countries. In the United States nearly everything on these airwaves is crassly monetized, whether on KZread or across the spectrum of cable television channels. I think watching anything "live" -- and therefore pocked with rude interruptions in content, mood, and civility -- will go out the window for recording everything we want to watch -- HBO and Turner Classic Movies being notable exceptions.

The Italian trio sonata was consolidated by Corelli as a work for two treble and bass (plus continuo). In France and Germany, many musicians exprssed the concern that the two upper voices were closer an left a "hole" in the medium range. As far as I know, Buxtehude did not say anything, but acted, using an instrument loved by Franch musicians and in second by German ones: the viola di gamba (In England, for instance, in spite of the splendid Elisabethan tradition of the 'concert of viols', Purcell usedthe Ir talain formula). . Buxtehude write his sonatas for violin, viola de gamba, basso di vila ans continuo, with the double result of a more balanced sonority and the pleasure of listening to the unique sonority of the viola di gamba, which is not reduced to a bass role, but a tenor voice..This is one of the very few lessons thatBach did not retain from Buxtehude during his travel in 1705, two years before the death of the composer. He was manly inerested by organ compostions. Thanks to Ria Brezova for that excellent initiative.
