I think second engine was not powered.
The 9000hp twin EMD monsters absolutely took off with Mandore Express in no time. Sometimes I wonder that the acceleration of twin EMD is far more powerful and lethal than even Push - Pull WAP 7.

These are passenger cars which are lightweight compared to freight/goods cars. I am accustomed to trains of the latter (in my country), that can in some extreme cases reach up to 3 kilometers in length. They may have ten locomotives, with the one or two in the middle and the three at the end controlled remotely from the front. *They* most assuredly do not accelerate very swiftly.
