Diesel Heater Quiet Fuel Pump Upgrade

Ойын-сауық

I will replace the original noisy fuel pump in my Chinese diesel heater with an upgraded "Ultra Quiet" fuel pump and test it. One of the biggest complaints of these heaters is the loud clicking coming from the fuel pump. Is this modification worth the time and money? I purchased mine from Ebay and it quickly sold out. Just search for "Ultra Quiet Chinese Diesel Heater Fuel Pump" on Ebay if you want to purchase one. www.ebay.com/itm/373933910567

The clip on the fuel pump wiring plug is designed to push in not to be pulled right out (* squeeze the wire clip in an then seperate the witing plug) saves loosing the clip while working on the pump, also no need to try to get the wire clip back into the slot when rejoining just leave the wire clip an push the plug socket back in till u hear it click.

I have the same ‘self-contained’ heater and removed the rubber pump mount altogether, then wrapped the pump in bubble wrap - made a vast reduction in the tapping noise. I also have a Webasto heater on my boat - I removed the pump mount rubber from that and suspended the pump with Ty-raps - that is a better solution and is virtually silent!

For best results: separate the pump, put it in a small box totally filled with fine sand (birds sand). If you suspend the box or put some soft rubber feet under it you will have a quit pump without any costs. Remember to mount the pump a little skew to prevent air enclosure.

Best sound reduction I have seen so far on those pumps, involved using a couple of small bungies and supporting the inlet and exit fuel supply and suspending it from like a lid or seat area. This is more like on the one's not encased but good info.

I swapped a standard pump for one of these from Ali express, mines bolted in the rubber mount to the van floor and was ready to try hanging it from cable ties but this pump is so quiet it’s not worth any more mods. When it’s very quiet I can only just hear it. I think they must have a rubber stop for the piston as the ‘clunk’ just doesn’t travel in the same way... very worthwhile indeed!

  • @geenote

Seems like a worthwhile upgrade at that price. As you say, it’s improved the situation rather than solving the problem altogether but with the all in one heaters it’s likely the best you’ll get. The metal casing acts as a sound box with the pump bolted to the side, even allowing for the rubber holder. Not sure if anything else is possible but I think I’d look at an alternative attachment to reduce the sound a little more. A styrofoam block cut in half and hollowed out to clamp around the unit, instead of the rubber ring, comes to mind as an idea if there’s room to wedge it in place between the tank and the casing.I feel that disconnecting the mount from the case will help, though. After, that it’s down to ear plugs, I guess! 👍🏻

on yours, it sounds like the sound is amplfied by the metal housing panels, like a little drum. On my external-pump type, it's a higher-pitch click. It sounds like yours has a click and a thud sound. I wonder if putting some cheap sound-deadening adhesive foam panels on the inside of that housing would decrease that thud sound. The empty part of the fuel tank may also resonate like a drum, so putting some of that sound-deadening foam on the sides/top of the tank would also help.

I have the pump inside my van so I can still clearly hear it. However, it is night and day compared to before. Man that thing was loud. It sounded like someone knocking on my van door...lol. The fuel line between the pump & burner is too soft and is expanding on every pulse so replace it with a more rigid hose. This will provide better & cleaner combustion + help with the noise. A lot of noise is transferring to the steel enclosure thru the rubber pump bracket so get rid of it entirely. Suspending the pump from above and below on a leather or rubber strap or even the old fuel line, hold it to the pump body with another (larger) hose clamp. The idea is to let the pump float quietly in its mount.

You must get the pump out side and far away as possible. Then take out the shock of pump action 🤔. Use a peice of spiraled fuel pipe either side of pump to support it, about 4in long excluding length clamped each side onto the pump it's self will do it, that will safely suspend the pump, or you can use soft rubber suspension set up to hold the pump leaving it relatively free to move a small amountused l used both options, spiraled fuel line double ( clamps each side) and mounted pump furthest away l could get it. Then you have silence. Complete silence. Good luck bud . Martin. 🇬🇧
