They told Alan Rickman that they were going to drop him on the count of three. They dropped him on one. The look of surprise on his face is real. Definitely a Christmas movie.

When this movie came out, the "action heroes" of the day were Stallone and Schwarzenegger. No one was expecting Bruce Willis to show up and knock it out of the park with this role. I'm not a huge fan of the sequels but Die Hard remains an action classic forever.

The best thing is, Stallone looks like a boxer. Schwarzenegger looks like a bodybuilder. Bruce Willis looks like your dad, or any other middle-aged, balding dude. When Schwarzenegger is fighting, you assume it's easy for him. Willis struggles, so it feels so much more real and visceral.

It is 100% a Christmas movie, Hans down! 1. the theft plan was centred on it being Christmas and the building being empty due to that with the exception of the needed hostages at the Christmas party. 2. John McClain was only there because it was Christmas. 3. The entire plot is rooted in Christmas despite not having any classic Christmas themes.

I think what people mean by "Christmas movie" isn't is theme but if it's traditionally watched at Christmas. Which Die Hard absolutely is. Where I'm from all James Bond movies are considered Christmas movies because traditionally, they were always aired around Christmas.

This is the movie that put Bruce Willis on the map as a serious box office contender, and also upped the ante for American action films. Willis was already popular from his TV show, "Moonlighting", co-starring Cybil Shepherd, but it wasn't until Die Hard that he became an international superstar. It grossed $139,434,346: foreign and domestic, during it's initial run, off of a $28 million dollar budget, making almost 5 times the production costs.

Han's reaction when he falls at the end was genuine. They were supposed to drop him on the count of three for the shot, but the direct sneakily told the rig guys to drop him on the count of one, so he could get that genuine reaction on his face for the shot. Brilliant!

As others have mentioned, Bruce Willis' main claim to fame was his role in a lighthearted TV series. He had been in a couple of middling movies that didn't do all that well at the box office. Then he was offered 5 million to do this movie. A lot of people including me were skeptical he had the chops to pull it off. Boy, were we wrong! This is one of a handful of movies I never get tired of watching. The others include "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Hunt for Red October."

This is about a guy trying to get home to see his family in time for Christmas. There are two Christmas movies, DIE HARD and LEATHAL WEAPON. Most of your elders think of this as a Xmas movie because before your iPhones and computers, there used to be a device called a television set, and over the holiday season, EVERY local television station would play these movies over and over. Of course EVERY man and boy that did not want to socialize with their family, would gather in the basement to sneak away and share in this awesomeness. And when it was done, we would change the channel to another station that was airing it. It was truly a blessed time. Cheers to all the 70’s and 80’s babies and yeah a few of you 90’s babies as well.... we had it made.

While not "a founding father of action films", 'Die Hard' is certainly a classic! It makes an unexpected departure from the established well-trained, deathless, war-machine "Action Movie Hero" (typically played by Stallone and Schwarzenegger), with John McClane being more of a vulnerable "every man" thrust into an increasingly dangerous situation.

Yo dudes! Thanks again for another great reactionary video share! You two asked if this was a Christmas movie? Well, there's been a saying since 1988 . . . it ain't Christmas til you hear Jingle Bells and see Hans Gruber fall from Nakatomi Towers ;^) By the way, Alan Rickman is also known for another so- called Christmas film (Love Actually) with Keira Knightly, Liam Neison, and a bunch of other brits. Don't know if you meant for this to be a tribute vid, but the black computer criminal that Argyle knocked out actually died about a week ago (RIP Clarence Gilyard JR.). And, lastly, don't feel bad that you thought that the guy that came out shooting at the very end was dead. A lot of people thought that he was well- hung before they found out otherwise. Same thing goes for my past girlfriends and me ;^) Keep up the good work, you two. All the Best!

It has all the tenents of the classic Christnas miracle story... right down to the last minute making it home to family, the unexpected "snowing" (bearer-bonds), the miracles, the savior, seeking redemption for recognized failures, clear messages about focusing on material wealth over goodwill leading to destruction, It is a classic Christmas tale - but people struggle to see it through an action lens.

No CGI, no special effects, nothing. You just did it. This is why people say good practical effects hold up really well over time.

  • @HamSandwich-xk3om

It's crazy how well this movie still holds up. The simplicity of the beats that actually started a movie genre work because the acting is done magnificently, especially for an action movie. Each character gets the reaction desired and the pacing is near perfect. Little details emerge upon each rewatch, too. This is important because there are a lot of subtle character moments. I can't imagine how Bruce Willis life must have drastically changed during this movies theatrical run. I know he was already in a fairly successful tv show, moonlighting, known more for comedy, much like Michael Keaton would also subvert expectations as Batman soon afterwards, but this movie catapulted Bruce Willis to mega star status and at the end of a decade dominated by Action stars like Arnold, and Sly, Willis became the relatable Hero.

The reason so many think of It's a Wonderful Life as a Christmas movie is that for a few decades, the rights to the film were in the public domain, so it was constantly on TV on every channel during December. It was as ubiquitous during that time of year as Christmas music.

"A Christmas Carol" (1951) - To me, by far the best version "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947) - Better than the 1994 version "Home Alone" (1990)

I like your hawaian shirt. I've got several and waiting to wear it again with just a jean jacket when I go walking when spring comes. Oh...the movie. I haven't finished watching your reactions. I've seen your other reactions so I anticipate it to be good.

4 Die Hard movies. 1 and 2 are classics (both Christmas movies!) I really like #4 as it's more modern. It's underrated. #3....was just ok to me. Should be a fun rabbit hole for you guys.

What are the themes of a Christmas movie? Family... getting back together and realizing how important your family is above other concerns... and some tension or situation being the catalyst to that epiphany. So Die Hard has an estranged husband coming to reconnect with his wife and kids but there is pride and conflict between them still... Then the "situation" happens as is traditional in Christmas movies to shock the main character into realizing their mistakes and reconciling with their family. It just so happens that the "situation" in this case is a heist disguised as a terrorist attack.

With McClain and Holly, when your in a marriage for multiple years and it's near its end . You will %100 understand the relationship between the two. But 1 thing to note. Holly knew how McClain gets under people's skin. The reverse you can see at the beginning where Hans has a sense of Charm towards Holly, but towards the end you can see Hans had enough of her when she called him a thief

I love watching younger people watching older action and/or horror movies... Cause I know there will be a point in the movie where the younger person says "You don't have a cell phone?! Oh wait... never mind" LOL.. So funny to me!! Yes.. there was a world without Cell Phones at one point.. and it was AWESOME imo!! lol

Lethel Weapon with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover is a buddy cop movie, and it came out before this one. It has action but it is during Christmas so there is a debate about this one as well. You should check it out, it is great if you are into this kind of action film

Die Hard wasn't the first action film, but it was the one that redefined the genre. It's definitely a line of demarcation; there's before Die Hard, and after Die Hard.

Die Hard reformats the action genre. After that film, every subsequent one emulated Die Hard. In other words, Die Hard is more than classic action. And yes, it's a Christmas movie!

    1. Karl/Alexander Godunov😇 also played in "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks and "Witness" with non Indiana/Solo Harrison Ford. He had a very interesting story. 2. Robinson/Paul Gleason 😇 seems to always play buttheads. I.e. "Trading Places" and "The Breakfast Club". 3. John will have a place to stay tonight after all.😍😋😈 After a night like that me better. 4. Another fun Willis movie that have similar events is "The Last Boy Scout". They drop more F-bombs that you can shake a stick at. Including a little girl. 5. Christmas movie? Yes, it takes place at a Christmas party. For those who say it could have been anywhere. It wasn't. 6. Missing you Bruce.☹

The Christmas movie debate is easily solved. Christmas must be essential to the plot - the story has to only work if set at Christmas. Given that Christmas Eve was chosen for the attack because the building would be largely empty (and likely they expected a reduced law enforcement presence), I think it's clear. As for it's status amongst action movies, for me it's a template movie. Movies made today are still directly compared to Die Hard; its influence is undimmed in the 36 years since its release. John McClane and Hans Gruber are iconic characters and both played by relatively unknown actors. Bruce Willis at the time was known primarily for Moonlighting on TV, and Alan Rickman was experienced on the stage but this was his first feature.

There was a case where a 911 operator was on the phone with a person whom car had stopped on a train track and she (the operator) wouldn't believe the caller was stuck in the car and needed help. The audio recording had the driver shouting on how the train was coming and you could even hear when the car was struck by the train. When the police and the emergency responders did finally show up the driver was still swearing and cussing the about the 911 operator. It was no surprise when the operator was fired for mishandling the call.
