Die Grenzwacht hielt im Osten [German folk song][+English translation]

New clearer version: • Die Grenzwacht hielt i...
The song is from the poem "die Baltenfahne" from Karl Freiherr Manteuffel-Katzdangen. He was related to Hans von Manteuffel who fell 1919 at Riga and should tell the story of him and the Baltikumer, German soldiers fighting shortly after ww1 in the Baltic states.. The poem was created in 1920, just one year after Hans has fallen, but published the first time in the 30s without a melody.
Here in German:

English:
en.wikipedia.o...
So in 1920 these soldiers had to leave the baltic region, because of no support from the German government.
In the song they are desperate, many had fallen. They return to their fatherland and bring home their flag as their last duty. But it will be the duty of their children to bring the flag back to eastern land (Ostland).

I agree, especially considering that it fits so very well with the situation of the Teutonic order as well (the forefathers of the easters Germans). They led a crusade into the east with the blessing of the empire, and christened the eastern lands (eventually) in it's name. However, in their time of trouble, the empire turned it's back on them, and they were subjugated by the Poles. The Teutons weren't any heroic people or anything. They were pretty brutal to the locals, and were a warring theocracy bent on purging heathens. It still hit me that they were betrayed by those they still saw as their brothers in their fatherland.

Theorethicly german imperial cavallry consisted of cuirassiers, dragons, lancers, hussars and hunters on horse. Well , saxon heavy cavallry had been Reiter and bavarian light cavallry ,Chevauxlegers' (!). But i reallity it was ,Einheitskavallerie'/ standardized cavallry, where every cavallryman had a lance. While british lancers used male bamboo shaft, other european nations ash( Esche) shafts, in Germany the lances had been steel pipes, filled with softly pressed ( zerknülltem) paper. The ,Lanzenwimpel'/ small lance flag showed the ,coat of arms' colours from the german state, the cavallryman came. In Prussia this was ,black and white', but correct Prussians wore the ,Lanzenwimpel' wrongly with white side on top, because black colour was not 100% waterprof. Some german cavallry lances saw wwll, even lance use of german cavallry ended in 1927. Why? A lot of lances had been transformed into tools for military telephone and telegraph wires.

No, no, you don't understand. Songs about 'depresion' sung by bratty teenagers are indeed sadder than a song about such a loss of life.. For things being like this we have no one else to blame, but ourselves. We've let the morals and ethics of old be forgotten and so we have what we have now..

And never forget the Volga Germans, the Germans from East Prussia, Konigsberg and the other people who no longer had a home to return to after the fires from the war died out. Many came to the USA, and to Canada. I once knew a very old man, Wolfgang who lived next door to us when I was a boy. He came to America in the 1950's, and never spoke about it. It was a necessary condition, for the rise of the United States and Russian Superpower, to smash the German Empire and split it's remains. But, the memory of the Germany of 1900 lives on in the diaspora of it's people. What remains is a shadow of what existed over 100 years in the past.

That part of Europe in early 1919 was truly in a turmoil and divided by Polish, Germans, Lithuanans, Latvians and bolsheviks. Due to the number of nationalities and divisions among politicians (and regular people) there were definitely more hostilities than needed.

Indeed, the first post WW1 years were absolute chaos in eastern Europe. Bolshevics smelling blood and trying to push westwards, polish with their ambitions of a young state (not counting in the Commonwealth years), Baltic states just trying to survive and defend our fresh independence... there were so much scenarios that could've happened. As a last note, I wish you the best, even if you cancelled the book or not. It is enough that someone actually looks into our history, despite us easterners being thrown out as "irrelevant" and "non-worthy historically" people.

apparently, the song is from the 1920s during the Russian revolution, german soldiers from the baltic regions fighting in the Baltic regions, their final tribute to their homeland is to carry their flag to their homeland (I don't remember if it was to bring the flag to Germany, a baltic country, or Russia.

Look up the 'Baltisches Landeswehr'. Just after WW1, even though the German Empire collapsed and Poland, France, and all the other countries were taking territory, the Germans and the Germany army in the east fought on until late 1919, taking control of much of Latvia and western Lithuania but ended up fighting everyone around them- Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poles and the communists. They trudged their way home in mid-1919. Thats why they're so sad I'd say in all of their songs- they want to be part of Germany but they have ended up fighting everyone and they are slowly and bloodily trying to return to Germany.

Ruhe In Frieden und Geh Mit Gott, Deutschen kameraden des die zuerst Weltkrieg... I cried when I listened to this. I'd heard the other version long ago, and always loved it despite it's solemn, and depressing composition. I just found this version today, and it really broke my heart. Seeing what all of those brave young Germans fought for being forgotten and replaced. The lyrical content detailing the struggles of the Teutonic Crusaders gives such an agonizing and eerie chill down my spine when applied to the First World War, which has been my primary obsession for the last 2-3 years. I truly wish the Germans had won the war. Gott Mit Uns, mein kameraden.

The fact that it is about the Baltic Freikorps is what makes the song even more endearing and sad to me. I suppose I wouldn't know, but I think the 1920s were far crueler times for Germans than the era of the crusades, and the Freikorps are a subject of history I am both much more familiar with and interested in.
