"Die Berliner Mauer 1984 von Westen aus gesehen" - interview with photographer Philipp Bösel

Ойын-сауық

Remember my video of the Rolleiflex SL66?
• Rolleiflex SL66SE - re...
Now let's talk about the men behind that specific camera: Philipp Bösel and Burkhard Maus! They created a fascinating photo project about the Berlin Wall in 1984. For this video, Philipp invited me to an in-depth talk about his project. I hope you'll enjoy watching it!

    I was born in 1966 so I remember this wall well, even if I am not German. Very interesting! Thank you!

    Fascinating to see how such a physical structure symbolised the psychological split imposed on a people. Capturing it’s aging and cultural incorporation reveals how all things are mutable over time.

    Yes, it's true. But also that split in some ways still is deep within our country, sadly.

    Fascinating story, fascinating project! I reached adulthood in 1983 in western Germany, it was an exciting period - with the cold war still full-on, the punk movement coming up when it already was ending in USA and UK, and large parts of the western hemisphere still feeling obliged to provide some halfway decent social security while the competition of the socialist block was still there. What many don't know, people not just tried to flee from the east to the west; over time, a six figure number of people willingly migrated from western to eastern Germany. Howsoever - those photographs really are a unique documentation of a very special human artifact from a very special era!

    Yes, it’s a special artifact from weird times … but also from the midst of the longest time of (relative) piece that we ever enjoyed in Europe. I didn’t know that so many people were traveling from the West to the East. Have to check that out, thanks for telling us. And I am really hoping that this great photo project gets some more exposure in the future as well. It was back in 1984 but it is such a relevant document of the times still today!

    Stationed in Ashaffenburg 81-83, never visited the wall. Things were weird then, (Falklands,etc.) but the rock concerts were great.

    Well, what can I say: I was born and living in Germany since 1975 and I never ever saw the wall ...! It was great to experience that the Cold War ended when I was young. Which makes today's global situation look dark again ... but that is another story. Weird that the Berlin Wall was there in the midst of maybe the longest peace time we had in Europe.

    Hi Tom hope your well I enjoyed the video very interesting Philipp did a good job recording the history of the wall it was different for him because he was born and grew up with it always there it is good that he did the project for later generations to get an impression of what it was like I remember it being pulled down I was 24 years old at the time and seen it only on the news here in England and thinking it was a great thing to see it fall.......

    Thanks a lot for your comment! Yes I think one story we all can learn from this is that it's often worth it to document something even if it's disliked by many, like the wall. Times change and then it's gone, and all you're left with is all those photos! Cheers to England!

    Really great to see and hear about such a large and in hindsight important project! 👍 Weird question maybe, but I'm just curious; what lens is used for the close-up of Mr. Bösel?

  • @tomscameras

    @tomscameras

    Many thanks for your feedback! The close-up camera was a Canon R with the simple EF 50/1.8 lens on it. (Set to 4k video, the old EOS R defaults to APS-C crop.)
