I think it's important to note that in the barbie lore, Midge was already married to her husband when the pregnant doll debuted, but that wedding line wasn't very popular. However, Midge was also originally released as a teenager (like all the other dolls), and there was no clear age progression. This resulted in the misconception that Midge was an unwed teen mom (even though she had a painted on wedding ring), which is a significant reason why the doll was pulled

I had Midge's entire collection from the 2000s, and she was one of my favorite barbie dolls. I had all of the pieces (including the shoes) but I'd taken it all out of the packaging and set up/played with the sets for 2 or 3 years, but never took them outside the house and I was very "responsible" when playing with the special sets I had (originally thinking that I'd pass them on to my kids like my mom and grandma did for me) so everything was "lightly used" but when 2017 rolled around and I needed money for college I ended up selling my toy collections. Just Midge and her associated sets and dolls sold for over $700!

That’s funny but the rainbow didn’t become an LGBTQ symbol until 1978. Sharing clothes meant parents didn’t have to buy an extra wardrobe for him. It’s a modern interpretation that he’s gay most likely. Especially since Barbies were marketed for little girls and little girls don’t usually care about gay men since they can’t relate 😅

I absolutely loved my pregnant midge doll!!! My mom was pregnant with my little brother around the same time so it was cool to have a doll that mimicked that !

I loved the Barbie happy family collection as a kid! I never understood the complaints that it “promoted teen pregnancy.” Midge’s character was meant to be an adult woman at the time. She had a clearly visible wedding ring, and her husband and older son were sold separately as part of the collection. They even sold an older looking couple as grandparents.

When Midge first appeared in Life in the Dream House, she was shown in black and white with retro clothing (which is a nod at the real Midge being released around that time period. She’s a very old doll lol). She still uses old slang from time to time.

I found a vintage Midge doll in a thrift store. It’s not that old, but it’s from 1998. Somebody cut the hair up to her neck, and had a few marks on her that weren’t able to go away. I can tell she was well loved. It’s not the pregnant one, though. This just reminded me of it.

They also had the Barbie Video Girl in the movie that was taken off shelves and even the FBI was worried about that barbie

I still have my pregnant midge😂 honestly as a kid it was just really fun to take her belly on and off and just have the baby stored in it. I remember taking it to family functions and everyone was in awe that it was a kids toy. I never really understood why everyone was weird about it. I think she even had a ring on her finger so it wasn’t like a “sinful” thing.

They would always say that Midge could fit into Barbie’s clothes and that Allan could fit into Ken’s clothes because they were new characters after a while they stopped saying that. Also, the 1964 Allan IS the same Allan in the Happy Family line he was just redesigned! Barbie was introduced in 1959, Ken in 1961, Midge in 1963, and Allan and Skipper were both introduced in 1964

I had a pregnant barbie in the very early 90s. There was no controversy. And I was an adult by the 00s when there was an apparent pregnant midge controversy but I never heard about it.

i just saw the movie it was so good loved it ❤❤

Barbie was an G&O doctor. And Midge was her patient. If irc, she was married. Not only that, it was part of the Barbie can be anything campaign. I would let my kids play with it. Let's go to the prenatal doctor and see if the baby is OK. There's a lot of learning opportunities there.

She mostly got pulled because parents thought she was representing a teenage mother, as that was the original introduction of her age in the backstroke when Barbie came out. She was always MUCH YOUNGER than Barbie (a kid). So that was not a good look because they never progressed her age or added onto the original story from when Barbie was created.

It's so weird hearing about all the "contraversy" around Midge because where I live people don't know much about the Barbie lore or which doll is dating which doll. We just took it as huh this doll is pregnant and it became a popular doll. No one was outraged because no one knew the backstory. I personally found the whole pregnant doll thing a bit creepy so I never wanted one. But yes definitely had friends who played with Midge and Ken as a couple.

I used to have that Midge doll when I was a kid but I had completely forgotten about it, thanks for the nostalgia!!

If you still have it you could probably sell it for some good money, now if you don’t have the full set or it isn’t in best condition then men, but considering the movie IS coming out it’ll probably encourage more buyers to buy the dolls

My aunt who's a barbie fan said that way back before, the doll clothes available were for Barbie and Ken only. Midge can also fit with Barbie's clothes and that doesn't make her a lesbian

Alan came in to our thrift store with his girlfriend from the 60s..my sister and I thought they were ugly, but we only had two male dolls I had to play with the "ugly" ken because I'm the younger sibling 😂. Now we realize how precious he actually was.

i had the pregnant midge doll & loved her. My grandmother was lead delivery nurse at her hospital, & retired with one of the best survival rate records in the state. My mom was a OBGYN manager, so for me it was great bc the adults in my life delivered babies.

I also had grow up skipper from my mom. You twisted her arm and she grew taller and developed boobs. My mom used it to help explain puberty to us. 😂

Ooh, I had that exact pregnant barbie! I loved it so much, it was one of my favorites. Why was it controversial, though? I never saw anything weird with it when I was a kid. Sometimes adults make things seem worse than they actually are. 😂

I heard that it was because all the dolls were originally released as teens. Midge later on had a wedding set that wasn't widely released. Then, they had the pregnant version that was released with a more popular "barbie can be anything" line. There weren't any tv shows or whatever about the dolls, so not everyone realized they had "gotten older." Even though she had a painted on wedding ring, many moms were more familiar with teen Midge thought she was a teen mom and didn't want that image for their kids.

Everyone else: obsessed over the characters from life in the dream house Me: only watched the movie for Emma, Ncuti, and Connor

Allan and Ken were definitely the best of friends! Why else would they swap clothes so often at night

Midge was my childhood doll! I LOVED her and still talk abt my doll to this day. I had her Suburban home, Tommy, and her husband!! I REALLY wanted her in-laws but was never able to find them. Frl she’ll always be a part of me.

i BEGGED my mom to buy me the pregnant midge doll. it had already been recalled too so I got it from a collector off eBay. when I was 7. because I wanted a pregnant barbie 😭 she’s with my other barbies in a box somewhere and I still think the concept is so cool

They actually banned the movie in my country for having gay characters, so that basically confirms the Allen/Ken theory

I'm 60, and I used to play with my sister's Francie doll when I was little. She was a friend of Barbie.

My little sister had the pregnant midge and she was one of her favorite dolls. It's not controversial to be pregnant and she was a good way to simply explain the facts of life to a kid who probably has a pregnant mom at some point in your young life.

I think it was controversial as Midge's wedding doll wasn't very popular so people started to think she was a pregnant unmarried teen mom for some reason.. still a bullshit reason though.

@@marbleb33s Bizarre still as Midge isn't an unwed teen mom, she's a hunk of plastic kids play with and use to make their own stories. I had zero knowledge of Barbie lore and suspect most other kids were the same.

My grandma has a midge doll, she grew up with 6 siblings in St. Louis. That Midge doll was her only toy for years because of how poor our family was back then. It is such a beautiful doll, it makes me want a barbie back in time doll where they use their original designs again, it would be cool.
