You should totally rename this "how to make sergers un-scary'. I've sampled a few different things with mine but I'm keen to try some more now, thank you.

He he, that's a good one :) I think they are just so fast and also feature the knife to cut fabric, so sometimes that gives us extra things to worry about, but once you get into it - the fear goes away :) There are so many more things they can do, but I don't have the attachments for them - one of them is an elastic feeding foot :)

Take pictures of the settings and the presser foot with your phone and the steps in between, then print them and put into a notebook. I work better with visual clues, so do this at work on my computer. This way, I don’t miss anything.

Awesome, thank you for sharing! You can probably even attach a tiny sample of fabric that it was used on, so that way in the future you know if it was lightweight or medium weight fabric and etc :)

I love that you are wearing a garment you sewed yourself. So many times I watch garment sewing videos and the presenter is wearing a RTW garment. There is nothing wrong with that - we all wear RTW no matter how much we sew - but it is a nice touch if you are actually wearing something you made. It is a demonstration of your skill and passion for sewing. (LOVE your blouse!)

Don't be scared! :) sergers can be different, but with the manual in hand and some scrap fabric (we all have that, right?) you can dedicate an hour or so just exploring what it can do for you. It is fun, enjoy! :)

Thanks for another great video Alisa! My mom's old Bernette makes a lovely rolled hem - I should actually use it on more things! I also love using the serger for gathering (just with the normal pressure foot) because it goes so much quicker than the sewing machine, and I have less thread breakage. The flatlock seam I got right on the first try (beginner's luck) and never again after that 😂 I do love the look of it though so I will just have to keep trying. I know the machine can do it, I just have to find the right combination of settings again.

Zelda, hello there and.... guess what I am going to say? :) Get that serger out of the box, look up a manual for it, get a big pile of fabric scraps and set aside a couple of hours and you will not regret it! You will love it!

This was an awesome video. I learned so much today. Moving the stitch width up to 7 when gathering makes perfect sense. I just finished using my serger to gather with and sometimes it fell off the edge a smidge. That stitch width would have made the biggest difference. Thank you for all you do. You’re awesome.

I have finally mastered how to thread my surgery and then it broke down. It is 20 years old. so I just bought a fancy juki and now that I'm a lot more confident, I look forward to using some of these new techniques

Dedicate an hour or two, grab your serger manual and a pile of scraps and a sewing notebook too, to take notes, and experiment away :) have fun!

I had two of your sergers and returned them. I had professional help with them also. I then invested and bought a Baby Lock VICTORY with AUTOMATIC tension and AIR threading. What a pleasure this Victory is. Everything works perfectly and with ease!!!!!!! Try it out in a store. You sew so much and you will enjoy sewing more with the Victory. I use mine for the Dress Around the world. I am not a sales person but found this serger when I brought what you have to a store. The lady in the store fixed your serger three times and then when she went to test it the machine worked the first time but never the second, so I gave up. I spent three days on the last machine at my home and what a waste. Two machines were bad. The Victory is a dream. I have played and played with the Victory and it works every time. Awesome video. Thank you. I wish it were possible to be able to machine gather on patterns that have a specific start and finish point for the gather, but the rest of this should help a lot in my sewing endeavors.

Great video. I was a licensed instructor 12 years ago. Sold my top of the line Babylock serger due to downsizing and haven’t touched one since. Really useful. Who knew my server was so versatile?! I’ve been struggling with a rolled hem foot on my sewing machine for weeks - unsuccessfully. I’ll definitely be trying that on my serger and some of the other techniques. Thank you so much for your vlog 😀

I've been using it, getting more comfortable and more proficient... the gathering foot that attaches the ruffle to the hem edge at the same time - wooo! I gotta go read the manual, you inspired me. Thanks for your videos, you've taught me a lot!

I love this serger. It's very easy to use and thread. Not as easy as air thread😂 but still easy. It is a good entry machine imho. Very helpful video for more to do with our sergers. This channel is so full of information. I'm pretty sure someone could learn to sew just watching you. ❤

Hi there. Hope this is useful but if you type in the make and model on line you will probably find a copy of the manual is available to download. I found one for my old sewing machine and Overlocker which I have both printed and kept on computer file.

Thank you. I've had my serger for years (Brother 1034D). Took the stitch finger off once. I need to try these techniques, especially the rolled hem as I want to make some scarves.

Yay!! I got a used serger but have no idea how to use it yet, had it for a cpl years now lol. I tried one thing but the blades wouldnt cut the fabric so i replced those snd learned how to oil it and do some basic maintenance etc...i have no idea if it still needs to be looked at by a pro but im gonna try some of these and find out. Love it! I have the same machine from Christmas, have not taken it out of the box yet 🙄😬😉 I want to upcycle clothing with it but it's hard to learn a new machine. Took me 3 days to realize a touch screen on my embroidery machine, meant you had to actually TOUCH the screen to turn it on. 😂😂 LOVE your videos!

Take the serger outta the box!! Lol, that made me laugh because mine sat in the box for a month. Then sat on my sewing table for ANOTHER month. I saw a vid titled "Don't be afraid of your serger", that helped.

Thanks for this video. I'm just getting used to using my new serger. I've seen videos on mine and the different stitches it will do, It does the same things as yours does but it doesn't have the different feet. So far I've just got the threading down, adjusting for the different fabrics, I've just done the 4 thread so far. Your video has helped me a lot and given me courage to try the different things it will do. I've been watching the use of cover stitch machines, maybe after I get this serger down I will see about getting one. Here in Norway they are still very expensive, but I have found a used one that was only used 2 times. I think it is a Brother also. My serger is a Singer. After trying and working so hard on getting it threaded good, I really am interested in the Air threader machines. I want to start making my own underwear, and got a pattern to make a swim suit so I've really excited on getting more use of my serger.

I have purchased a new Janome My Lock 644D and still learning how to use it correctly with the settings etc for knit but as you say you have to experiment with this to get it right. Have had an Elna which has been retired as having problems with finding replacement parts so hence buying a new serger. I have been doing blind hemming with the Janome sewing machine and rather like the results I get with my knits. Thank you for your tutorial.

Thank you for showing how to use a flatlock for a hem! By the way, I use more of an edge when making a blind hem so that I can cut more off without having to worry about where my needle is.

I use the rolled hem often as well, my Elna Dex actually has 2 rolled hem settings. I have never used my machine for gathering, not even sure I have the foot for it. I have never used serger for blind hem, I use my normal machine, but I do the flat lock. I definitely will do the pintuck method in future

The Babylock Bictory makes a rolled hem with a turn of 2 buttons, easy.

This is a great video, thank you for posting! I'm looking at getting my first serger and I'm wondering how this model does on polar fleece?

I just bought this exact model a couple of days ago. I've lost over 100lbs and treated myself to my first serger. I've still got my original Kenmore sewing machine that I made my kids clothes on 40 years ago and my Brother embroidery machine that I used for my granddaughter. I always wanted a serger but never could justify buying one until now. This time is for me. Thank you for the tutorial. I've not unboxed it yet because I'm turning my spare room into a sewing room. Now I'm looking forward to using it. I'm going to practice these hems first.

Great video, I always roll hem my table cloths, never thought of using it for sleeves etc. (My machine do not stitch when disengaging the serger's cutter/knife/scissor out, I have an Empisel serger)

You are a fantastic teacher, I’m so glad I found your channel. Can I ask, with the flat seam you did, that you use on tshirts, cardigans and sometimes shorts (around 7 1/2mins in), can it be used on woven cottons?

Thank you for this. You're always so upbeat it cheers me up to watch you. Could the rolled hem be used on the bottom of a valance so it doesn't mess up the flow of the valance? I want to make one with pleats at the top that cause the bottom to billow out into sort of bell shapes and hold that form. I've got an old Pfaf serger. I have the manual and a VHS tape for it. I wonder how it would look with metallic gold thread on the very edge. Do you think that would work? I like how the sleeves sort of look like petals. I'm not big on flowers, but that is pretty. I have to wear glasses to thread a needle. LOL. And even then I still struggle to figure out where the hole is. I've been handsewing for decades. Tried those handheld machines but they were garbage. I have to use a needle threader thingy to be able to thread since my coordination and depth perception suck. That gathering thing is neat! I don't think my serger has that foot, but I'll have to check. That would work well for a valance or a flap hanging down on a curtain. I wonder if I could use a technique like that to attach curtains to a drapery header if I want the header to be smooth. What happens if you have 3 layers of fabric? Will the bottom to get gathered or just the very bottom? My hand sewing of ladder stitches is sloooooow. I made a new cushion for my mother's lap tray & it took me 12+ hours-- granted my thread kept getting tangled or breaking and it took forever to thread the needle and then my cat started attacking the thread as I was sewing. LOL. I did sew a zipper in so that took additional time- and that time included cutting foam board to size, gluing on a reinforcement piece, punching holes in the foam board, etc.
