This movie is proof that if you have solid writers and people who really want to make a movie instead of BILLIONS of dollars, it can absolutely be done. $80-$90 million dollars is still a lot of money to fund a movie, but it still affords a great product nonetheless.

The reason that scene was expensive was the choreography and post production. It isn't as if it was all practical effects. They left the guns put in the end for comedy purposes not budget purposes. Think about it. Everyone else had guns. So claiming that they left them out for the final battle is a misnomer.

The studio fought tooth and nail to avoid the dreaded R rating thinking that it would kill the sales for the movie since it was a "superhero" film. However, the crew knew that it would never work if it was not an R rated film. It was a fight between the folks that were working spreadsheets and the people that knew the material.
