Christina Ricci’s Ms. Thornhill wasn’t the originally planned character they had in mind. Originally, Thora Birch was to play Tamara Novak who was Wednesday’s dorm mother and the only ‘Normie’ at Nevermore academy. Tamara would’ve also had a focus on all things botanical. While Thora had finished the bulk of her filming, she had to step away for personal reasons, and an article that was published stated that her role would not be recast and they would add a new character. This is where Christina Ricci’s Ms. Thornhill comes in, but her character essentially takes over Tamara’s role with a new name. You can even see in several scenes in the first few episodes that Ricci had to act in front of a green screen since none of her shots feature other characters and are static shots.
