I love that valve is looking at Wayland and I really hope they take advantage of it and pipewire for SteamVR in general but also for ingesting frame data for creating their overlays.

SteamOS is one of the best KDE-based distros that I've ever seen. The out-of-box experience is robust and streamlined for users with little Linux experience. I've had a few hiccups with the fullscreen UI, but it was phenomenal to see a PC that was polished to such an extent -- and IMO is a better platform for gaming than Windows EVER was.

It helps that it was designed for a specific hardware with one main clear use case (gaming) and yeah they worked on bug fixing, polishing the experience a bit more.

As a new deck owner, I was a bit frustrated with the desktop experience with just the deck controls, but with a proper m+kb I'm really enjoying KDE as a first time Linux user.

Lots of handheld companies are moving towards Linux to compete with the SteamOS experience. Some are even shipping SteamOS with their products now! This is truly the year that Linux gaming takes off.

2:35 - actually, I believe the Steam Deck uses a modified Wayland in game mode, but yes in desktop mode it uses X11. I did some research on that a while back, maybe tonight I can look it up again.

FYI: Biggest complaint I have on the Steam Deck is DPI scaling. It appears to be global, not per-screen. Which can be a problem when switching between the tiny screen of the Deck and the high resolution of a 4K screen. For now, I just keep it set to 1080p on the TV, but I'd really like to be able to get the crisp image of full 4K.

David's Steam Deck talk was very interesting for sure(and David has a great sense of humour!). It finally revealed what many people asked for months: we heard from devs that Valve did ask KDE to work on Plasma but there were no specifics. I was also pleasantly surprised that consumers are enjoying desktop mode as well because i have seen more than a few complaints/suggestions towards the Plasma side from users online. Plus, these are not the usual Linux enthusiasts who are trying out Plasma for the first time, so i assume their expectations will be higher(particularly to the app ecosystem). But still, good to hear they're mostly satisfied and the bit that Valve devs themselves prefer Plasma. The idea to create a reference KDE distro also sounds a lot like Gnome's Gnome OS.

Talking about flatpak on plasma, I would like to be an easy method to change the flatpak applications icons. When I apply a theme some flatpak apps change automatically, others don't, it would be cool to have a gui interface that helps with changing the icons.

Maybe try out Flatseal to give the apps that don't change their icons permissions to read the .icons folder in /home EDIT: Or wherever plasma keeps custom icon packs

Hi Niccolò, if kde don't maintain an LTS version of the software any distro using kde will be always unstable!!!! Looks at Kubuntu for years was unusable with bugs all over the places, You can't pretend the distros create an LTS version of KDE Plasma. Maintain a LTS should be a priority in the "The KDE Manifesto" and financed buy donations by distro mantainers and others. KDE MUST STEP UP in QUALITY.

Interesting items I've noticed: - gamescope session (Wayland) can be used for streaming on the Steam Deck to Steam Link client - Plasma Wayland 5.25.5 doesn't support this (black screen - possibly not using the same libraries? My current setup is with pipewire but it could be different) - It is hard to force a theme on QT apps like Discover when outside of plasma session My Plasma Mobile experience has other concerns 🙂 I would love to see pswd manager and maybe different route than the current sddm + plasma session lockscreen. Perhaps greetd instead? With that said, the only thing that still catches me off-guard would be Baloo 😄 Everything else is working more than fine for me on my devices!

Its hard to use ANY kde develop application outside kde sesstion for example: trying to use kate in gnome will result in a lot of colorization issues like black background on black text or white background on white text. I'm not sure what to blame here maybe its not kde fault but gnome fault, maybe both
