Did Spirit really find hot spring deposits on Mars?
Ғылым және технология
Episode 132
Hot spring deposits on Earth preserve evidence of microbial life, including from nearly 3.5 billion years ago. So it was big deal when the Spirit rover on Mars discovered evidence of similar deposits, but is this the right interpretation?

Mars Guy and a cup of coffee is my Sunday morning ritual now. The look back at the relevance of discoveries made by earlier rovers is really interesting, even more so since you're tying to current research (your own) back here on earth. Great stuff!

But maybe next Sunday, ...no new Mars Guy video. We will miss it, but he sure deserves a brake, after more than 100 Sunday episodes 🙂
Very intriguing and loving how discovery on Mars leads directly to field work on Earth. Have a great trip and hope we get to see some cool footage and great science. Thanks, Mars Guy.
You are a true scholar. Thanks for your interesting work and contribution to the world 😊
When I was hunting rabbits, it was amazing how many features started to look like rabbits as well. Our brain is quick to see what it is familiar at seeing from the past. That's where the processing power of our brain has to have a check, check and check again feature. So a visit to Chili sounds like a great idea, to look at features in a 'new light'. Hope you are able to get away alright and have a nice trip Mars Guy.
Thank You Mars Guy! It is nice to go back in time to review old discoveries once again. There is so much to learn still!
Excellent episode, can’t wait for part 2, have a great trip too Chile Mars Guy👩🚀
You got me going now Mars Guy… Cant wait for that instalment… Cheers from Melbourne Australia

Awesome that you're tying Mars observations with your own Earth observations. I cannot understand why your channel isn't more popular as you do a spectacular job in every regard. I guess meme videos are simply more appealing ;).
Nicely done composition on this weeks video. Very informative, and I liked the "flight" to the surface. Looking forward to your next one. Good luck, and stay safe out there! (It seems to be more dangerous to live on Earth than on Mars, these days.)
I so look forward to my weekly robotics/exogeology lesson! It's always fascinating to see comparisons of places here that do harbour ancient life to potential sites on Mars! Here's to a safe and wonderfully productive trip for you and your team, Steve!
Hey Mars Guy, enjoy your trip to Chile. My ex-wife, a geologist, is from Chile and is living there again. Have a good time there. 👍💪✌
Awesome video! I need to go educate myself on the previous missions to Mars. Spirit, here I come! Thank you, Mars Guy. As always, you're the best! Oh, and good luck in Chile. See ya there or when you get back. Safe journeys, Mars Guy.
Great to get a video about Spirit. I remember when the wheel got stuck and those early pictures. I know you are busy with perseverance but other videos about the other rovers would be very much appreciated. Just in case you ever get bored. 😂😂😂
From the numerous Mars images you've seen, do you happen to have a sense of where we might want to begin looking for mineral deposits that would be useful to mine for future human settlers? If so, that would be a cool topic for a video. Oh, and good luck in Chile!
¡Buena suerte con sus descubrimientos amigo! (Good luck with your discoveries, my friend!)
Another great video about an interesting feature on Mars. I hope your field trip to Chile goes well. I visited the Altiplano of Argentina many years ago, and we looked at some hot spring deposits that were being mined for borates. The volcanoes in Chile are very impressive but I didn’t get a chance to cross the border.
Spirit is one of my favorite rovers. I love how you talk about all of them. Oppy next please! I love the video, thanks Mars Guy.
A lot of great action shots in this video! Thanks Mars Guy!
Thx again MarsGuy and have a good trip. My mom used to live on La Palma - until the new volcano erupted two years ago and its lava slowly, but steadily approached the house of her and her husband and finally simply buried it under 15 meters of lava! It was very sad, they had put a lot of effort in making it a beautiful place. But they are fine, back in Switzerland and after some mourning back on track. They still visit now and then and just yesterday she sent me a drone picture of a local newspaper of the new crater. And this looks a lot like these chilenean ones! Very colourful, yellow, grey, pinkish-greenish, brown and still smoking almost two years after the eruption came to a stop.
Wow, I can't wait to see the next one!
Another excellent presentation!
So glad that you are visiting my country to do science, we have a huge natural laboratory in all our extension. Hope you have a wonderful experience over here! 🇨🇱
Always entertaining and educational...Thanks again!!
Spirit and Opportunity, that takes me back. I remember reading up about their latest discoveries on Mars in National Geographic magazine every week.

Glad you appreciate the "vintage" content!
Exciting stuff. Wishing you all the best in Chile! Looking forward to seeing what you find.
really hoping for some footage from Chile. can you show a little insight into how you perform field work?
Good stuff. Can't wait. Mars guy goes to Chile. He certainly jets about the solar system. ;)
Fingers crossed everything goes well in Chile Mars Guy, all our best for the trip!
I have microbial life, and suggest sending Sea Monkeys to Mars, just to mess with it. The serendipitous silica find is fantastic. Best wishes on your trip to Chile!
Very interesting episode. Very good simulation of descent on Gusev crater. Impressive dust devils tracks. Some seem to exit from little craters in Gusev's central area and... coming to the river?. Some connection between dust devils and old hot gases vents?. Nice trip to Chile
Very interesting. Nicely explained. Safe travels.
Great episode! Love to learn more about Mars.
I hope you post a video of your trip whether you discover life in Chile or not.
Stay safe and enjoy that field trip.
Have a safe journey, thanks for sharing. Charles
Never been to Chile and it's on my "list". Safe travels and as always, looking forward to the next edition of Mars Guy.
Exciting stuff, thanks MG
Great, I am looking for such episodes :)
Best of luck with the field trip Mars guy! Im excited for part 2 :)
Have a nice and productive trip. Come back safely! All the best and keep up the good work. 👍
Great job and good luck with your adventure ! ! !
Its a pity it doesnt have GPR , like Perseverance
We want some very hot footage!! Chile sounds wonderful, always wanted to visit a live volcano! Careful of those spitting llamas as well!! Good luck M.G. 👍🇬🇧😎
Have a safe trip! I look forward to your next video.
Mars Guy… may your visit to Chile be safe, productive and exciting! We wait with bated breath! 😊
Another super video! Thank you :)
Safe travels! Good luck 👏👏👏👏
Enjoy your trip to Chile!
Have a nice journey to Chile, it would be great to hear from you working in the field!
Interesting, Mars guy. The search for past life goes on, but appearances can be deceiving. So it's important to keep an open mind. Good luck in Chile.
Have a great trip!!
2:22 "Here's Mars Guy for scale."
Great info!
Enjoy your field trip. We will be eagerly waiting for your return :) Is there any chance at all a basaltic (dust) mineral formations my contain a hypothetical microbial culture? Or is the sulfur essential?
Excellent! Can't wait! 👍👍👍
Excellent thank you
Fascinating. Safe travels.
Looks like the water entrance into crater lake was on the North side?
Great content.
Safe travels!!!!
Have a great and productive trip.😀
Just awesome
One step at a time. First Chile, next, Gusev crater...
Have a great time in chile playing with the volcano ❤
Happy travels
looking forward to it.
Looks like some recent solifluction on the slopes of the Chile volcano your visiting. Due to spring snowmelt? Where on the slopes are you geologizing?
Have a good trip.
Gracias y Buen viaje en Chile 🇨🇱
Looking forward to Chile report.
Wow. Thank you.
Take plenty of marshmallows. In fact, the rovers should be looking for ancient 'smore's deposits' as a top priority.
Mars is always teasing us to close r and look again. Hopefully we will soon
Safe Travels! Enjoy your journey of discovery…👍🏼😎
Fascinating
Sounds like you have some fun in store...a somewhat Mars like location here in Earth...
Have a fun and productive trip.
Wow! Enjoy the trip, but maybe wear a mask on the plane. My cousin and his wife got Covid after being on a long flight to Alaska w/ a nearby passenger coughing incessantly. both are recovering well it seems. Remember that you are only looking for fossilized microorganisms!
Have a nice trip, and have fun!
Fantastic
Have a safe trip!
The unplanned accidental nature of a stuck wheel being a key circumstance (2:!5), really highlights the importance of scientific method, as it pertains to making ground breaking discoveries. Enjoy your time away, to make ground breaking observations in Chile.
Awesome!
Have a nice trip 😉
thanks for giving me my mars info fill!
What do you think is in the lake that's under the South pole of mars? They say the lake is liquid water.
Mars Guy in the house and on the move!
Guess we won't know for sure til a sample makes it to a lab.

SpaceX will have frequent flights, to and from Mars. But of course politics is of ultimate importance to the democrat. Return mission at least a decade away.
Fantastic channel
Good luck on the volcano!
Woah, Mars Guy is coming to Earth?
Good luck to you in Chili!
Good luck! enjoy!
You should have a separate channel with all your field work, like a vlog.
Mars guy rocks!
