I adore watercress and add a bit to most salads and many dishes I make. (It’s excellent mixed with baby spinach, radishes and mushrooms in a salad or wrap.) I love the bite. Cress sprouts aren’t readily available so I fine chop watercress leaves to add to my eggy salad. Yum.

the stomach ache from all the protein could be related to your fiber intake! when you eat a lot of protein you also need to take in a lot of fiber to help your gut out. and with the powders specifically you could be allergic/intolerant to a specific kind. i can’t have whey protein so i use plant protein 😌

So clearly you have a camera in my kitchen. I make this dish almost every week and it’s 95% exactly the same - down to the shape and brand of pasta and brand of tuna. The only thing different is I’ve not added an egg but, if I have them, I DO add chopped Matiz Piparra peppers (or jarred banana peppers) for a pickled heat. There are also Portuguese brands of tuna in oil and some have lemon or piri piri, or mohlo cru that appear. Crazy how two people can create the exact same thing!

I think it's very interesting to discuss the nutritional value of our meals and be aware of the tradeoffs we make when trying to make something more delicious or more healthy. More delicious doesn't always have to mean less healthy and vice versa, but that's something you need to experiment with and pay attention to. Sadly, toxic diet culture has made these discussions very emotionally loaded for some folks or even dangerous to people with eating disorders, so it's definitely tough to approach the subject with the general public in mind. Thank you Carla for giving it a try, I found it very entertaining and would love to see more of that, especially when it's light-hearted and fun like this video!

As a type 1 diabetic i need to be low carb or carb conscious but im pro fat. Like id modify this, for myself, by going with that smaller amount of portion pasta and tossing in chickpeas or another good pasta legume (yes I know they have carbs too but its supplemented with fiber and protein that lowers the net carb count). Love a tinned fish pantry pasta

Hello! Two things that helped me with the protein stomach aches and such: 1) if you put protein powder in double the volume of water the package recommends that helps. It dilutes the solution and makes it easier for the body to process, in my experience. 2) if you’re starting to eat more protein, always try to eat it with some sort of carb. In my experience, that helped with digestion. The carb can be anything from rice to pasta, fruit or vegetable.

Exactlyn protein must be eaten with carbs together...it's something about the digestion but also how and where the nutrients are stored in your body and where the calories go.

I agree with the trainer on cutting the oilve oil down to 2 tbsp max for the onions. Personally myself I'd wilt in a ton of spinach or kale into the finished product and use a tuna and/or other fish not stored in oil just to bring the overall fat content down in the dish. Yeah, the finished product won't be as rich but it'll probably have more balanced macros overall. Could also just try to cut down your fat in other dishes you eat for the rest of the day as well to counter balance one dish that's higher in fats if you're tracking macros across your whole daily diet.

Carla! You've invented the first recipe I've tried with that Banza chickpea "pasta" that actually tastes delicious!!! I was looking for something Ultra Protein and have had that stuff languishing in my pantry for ages and I thought hey, lemon, olive oil, and parsley go with chickpea, why not try it? And it was sooo good. The texture of everything else hid that weird grainy texture bean pasta can have and the chickpea taste just fit in with everything. So now I've got a go-to big gains dinner TYSM!

Approx. 50g of protein per portion (and that's a generous portion) is excellent! I'll try this with perhaps water-packed tuna and I'm thinking to use half the amount of oil for the onions; hope the steaming method will minimize any charring! 🤞

Hi, Nashville native here. Arnold's is a "meat and three" setup, which is originally a Nashville concept. You got a really authentic experience, and Arnold's is one of the best! Prince's is the OG, but the original location no longer exists and I feel like it's never been the same. I will say that Hattie B's, although it seems touristy, it is CONSISTENT. Operationally, they have it down compared to the smaller businesses, which is a shame. After trying all the places, I still believe Hattie B's is definitely the juiciest. Next time, try somewhere that serves hot catfish!!!

Truvani protein powder is the only one I’ve ever found that doesn’t have stomach side effects and drinks a lot smoother without the typical protein shake taste or texture. And too much protein can upset your stomach, especially if you increase suddenly - you may be consuming too much for your size, but it also depends on what you’re eating with it. The best thing anyone can do is eat balanced meals because macros and such will naturally fit into what’s already on your plate.

To make protein powder or heavy protein meals heavier to digest: Here in Spain you can easily find an ingredient called "salvado de avena" (i think it translates to oat bran? it's a coarse powder made from the outer layer of oat grains). It's similar to oat itself but has a lot more protein and more importantly, fiber. Adding a teaspoon or two to a protein shake makes it more nutritious and easier to digest. The tough texture might put some people off as it does make the shake grainy, but you can alleviate that by soaking it in milk before blending it so it adds more creaminess instead. Another trick (unrelated to digestion) I found is to swap peanut butter (whenever using) with defattened peanut powder. Essentially the same ingredient but with the oil from the peanut removed. Natural oil from nuts is definitely healthy but if you use it nut butters to increase your protein intake very regularly it tends to be a little too much for me.

About protein intake - Yes, if you're not already accustomed to a high protein diet, your stomach will be mildly upset at you (protein farts are REAL 😭). I love protein powder as a busy college student, but the ones that make my stomach unhappy is powders contain whey concentrate, which contains some lactose content. Whey isolate has all of the lactose processed out. If you have a general dairy allergy plant based powders also exist. Other protein products that I am a fan of are Premier and Fairlife protein shakes. I also like Barebells protein bars but those are pretty expensive at $2 a serving, so I've settled for Pure Protein bars. Those have that dense chewy texture that's pretty common to all protein bars but it's not as bad as Quest. And Ross is right about carbs. They're great because its your body's preferred source of energy for day to day function. Higher carb diets are more beneficial to performance in the gym.

Could you use the oil from the tuna jar to cook the onions?

I watched this whilst eating a massive bag of crisps and drinking wine in the bath. I chose to believe that Carla, and Ross, and Ross’ massive shoulders support me in that and I simply will not be corrected

Use the tuna oil and 1/8 cup olive oil for the onions, then you can have both and the nice man can't complain

I always wondered if the fat macros on the tuna packed in oil considered i was draining it first, or no. could you use the tuna oil to cook the onions instead? then use a little fresh drizzle at the end for a compromise?

You should get used to the protein intake, but it will likely take a while. I supplement with quite a bit of protein powder now. The potential digestive issues seem to be offset by regular vegetable intake -- mainly bell peppers, zucchini, and tomatoes. It works for me, anyway. Cutting the fat is definitely the hardest part of adhering to a balanced macro diet. Listen to Ross and you'll see results.

When I started going to the gym the protein was a hard one. But now I ate 4 eggs for breakfast no problem 😅
