I can imagine how frustrating that must have been back in the day to a writer. They make sure continuity is good, characters grow and have arcs, then some hot shot from the toy industry craps on your work and says “change this guy to Octane because we’re trying to sell his toy,”

Exactly. A lot of cartoon writers have noted that they were more interested in telling good stories. It's what frustrated Bob Budiansky when he wrote the comic book too.

I find it odd, because it provides a dual service. You give good writing that intrests older audiences, which allows the series to go further and sell more toys.

Saying Shockwave is no longer relevant is simply ILLOGICAL. He would have seen Unicron and the Destruction caused before it happened, but also found a way to SURVIVE it.

Even if he was crushed, I do believe he could come back if they continued the series. Perhaps contacting Galvatron from space.

I always thought it was weird that people thought Shockwave’s final stand in the 86 movie was a cowardly act. “Scrambling” is a military term for getting fighter planes ready for battle quickly. His last stand was a pretty heroic one.

What else could he do. Either Rapid attack order (he did) or call a retreat....wasnt like the decepticons had any super weapons & all planetary defences were likely out of power. Unicron's palm was big as a continent & his casual slap alone was more devastating than a nuke.

Fight or Flee. He ordered Fight. Shockwave did as was always order Protect Cybertron. Just the enemy was in a different weight class.

Shockwave was staying to oversee the Decepticons' escape from Unicron. I always thought that was a pretty courageous attitude. He was not fleeing before everybody else.

As a kid I didn't think scramble meant flee but something to do with disperse and take action. Which is kind of close. "scrambling is the act of quickly mobilizing military aircraft."

I really like this idea of a “pt. 2 retrospective” it’s just needed for some characters, especially Shockwave. After hearing some of the things about the original script with Shockwave playing a role in five faces of darkness, that would’ve been really cool to see unfold

It’s a shame we didn’t get to see more of G1 Shockwave in the cartoon.

1. Shockwave works better than Blitzwing in the role... and Octane in those later episodes. 2. I like the idea of Shockwave being Galvatron's enemy within the Decepticons... Shockwave's cold, logic-based order vs Galvatron's passionate, insane-chaos. 3. I hate the idea of Galvatron being restored to Megatron, he made a deal with the Devil... he has to live with it. But I could see his sanity being restored, it was partially after Webworld and supposedly even more when Optimus opened the Matrix. 4. Yes, re-animate Five Faces of Darkness... with Shockwave! And a decent animation studio. If the old voice tracks are unusable, then get Frank Welker, Corey Burton, Peter Cullen, Judd Nelson.... and hire GOOD voice actors who will honor the previous work.

The way you put it as Megatron made a deal with unicron just like how any person can make a deal with the Devil and would have to live with it for the rest of their lives is really unique great putting it out there

my favourite versions of shockwave will be the g1 and the energon one, and with the R.E.D figure of him will be release,i'm glad to see him get more attention,but the energon version should get a love too,that unique heavy design should be used for him

Not to mention, story beats of Energon has quite a few similarities to a lot of unused or early scripts of the G1 story like Quintesson's connection to Unicron, Shockwave being an honorable dude (thanks to this recent find of 5FOD) and much more.

As a kid, I was actually wondering if a little Shockwave was going to appear, when Shockwave had the little gun version of himself.

We all cried when Prime died, but what made the movie awesome for me was that the super advanced alien machine beings *actually hit each other* when they fired their precision advanced alien weapons at each other.

No body, no proof of death. I’m sure Shockwave found a logical way to survive.

Tell that to Huffer. He was named among the deceased in Dark Awakening. Ever since I saw that episode I was convinced that the other characters that didn’t show up in season 3 likely perished during the battle of Autobot city. Media in later years tend to play up the city battle as one of the bloodiest parts of the Great War. For that to hold true, a lot more than 7 Autobots would have to have been killed during it.

@@YeldellGW Actually that was a screw up. Brawn was the Autobot who was supposed to be listed but the script people put Huffer in his place. Everyone before was an Autobot who died on the shuttle. That being Prowl, Ironhide and Ratchet.

The answer is simple... For me Shockwave's involvement in this stories makes much more sense... Since he is my favorite decepticon, of course I rather him there! As Flint said... No dead body... He is still alive!!!

shockwave G1 toy was already a mastepiece, well design and constructed laser gun, made light and sound. Had metal parts too at the leg. Got the radio shack version.

Thanks, Rodimus! That's quite a discovery with the FFOD script, but I am happy with Shockwave's scripted death in TTM and leaving it there. It's a shame that there were very few Decepticon deaths versus Autobot deaths in the movie (and later some of the bad guys came back, and Optimus was even killed again!). I would have been happier with Blitzwing, not Octane, being the subject of Starscream's Ghost. It would be a dream to see a TOEI quality or better re-animation of FFOD with Flint Dille's involvement. AKOM was just an embarrassment.

Shockwave is my favorite Transformer ever! G1, Animated, Prime, Movie, I love almost every incarnation of him! Thanks for this video about his disappearance, I always wondered what happened.

I feel like a ton of G1 should be re-animated, every season had animation gaffs and suffered from some of that slipshod 80's toy commercial inconsistent quality. That being said, it could be interesting to see Shockwave grappling with his loyalty to Megatron, who is now the madman Galvatron.

Awesome! And this helped to clear up some more of the convoluted mess that is season 3. Still my fav season though lol. On a side note, my last purchased firearm was none other than the Mossberg “Shockwave”!

After watching this I don't know what to think. But I've always found it hard to believe that even an extreme case like the Unicron attack that a bot like Shockwave couldn't survive the attack.

I'm of the belief, as I say at the end of the video that Shockwave was buried but not necessarily killed by Unicron's Assault within a different tower from the one seen in Season 1 and 2. The events at the end of the Rebirth revived him and now, Shockwave is in hiding on Cybertron as he plans to help the Decepticons once more.

I’d like to have seen a version where Blitzwing goes to Shockwave to find out why he doesn’t trust the quintessons

I would like to see a fanfiction of season 3 of it.

Actually, I could see BOTH Blitzwing, and Shockwave, reacting badly to the Quintessons, and for similar reasons. Shockwave is certainly old enough to have memories, foggy as they may be - probably due to direct tampering before the Quintessons were driven from Cybertron - while Megatron would have no memory of them due to having being created later. Shockwave would likely be hesitant to mention them, because maybe at that point his memories were foggy enough for him to wonder if they were dreams instead. Seeing them for the first time in millions of years, would definitely trigger something. Blitzwing on the other hand, could have run into the Quintessons prior to joining Megatron on Earth, out in deep space. In fact I have a fanfic where he and Octane encounter the quintessons, are experimented on because they are triple changers, but are subsequently released by Sandstorm, who was captured as well but managed to escape. During the escape, Octane and Blitzwing get separated, and Blitzwing doesn't see him again for a very long time. By the time they meet up again in or just before Season 3, Octane either doesn't remember a thing, or remembers less than Blitzwing does.

I never knew about this original script, but find it interesting that sometimes fans can accidentally come to the same conclusions. I always felt that Shockwave, being in the 1986 catalogue, should be in the third season, and that he would certainly suit as the logical, critical character who could see through the Quints.

Lots of tfs we're millions of years old soundwave is around the same age shockwave is and both seem to have been early recruits of Megatron in war dawn or they were created the same time Megatron was Might explain why Megatron has a deep respect for soundwave and shockwave they were created the same time The tfs encountered many alien races no telling when they met the quints Alpha trion knows the quints personally he led the rebellion Optimus might have had knowledge Surprised kup didn't recognize them in the movie he remembered everything else he also had no knowledge of Unicron either til the movie/

There was an easy way to avoid continuity problems caused by Sunbow's memos... just make sure they "accidentally" burn while lighting a cigarette or cigar in your office. (In the old days when you could smoke almost anywhere.) 🙂

I personally like Shockwave being the original traitor. If I remember right, Blitzwing made very few appearances after that, and he was one of my favorite characters.

My favorite feature of Shockwave is that in the more recent cartoon series, his voice actors try to emulate his original voice provided by Corey Burton. :D Thank you for sharing this RodimusPrimal! :D

I like the idea of a new animated series that isn't just focused on selling the toys currently available. I know that will never happen, but I can dream

I always thought right after Shockwave said Scramble, he was killed by Unicorns hand , since he was never seen again , though I always felt that Soundwave was pushed aside for Cyclonus .

I like that it was Blitzwing; it showed real character development that few seem to notice.

Another great video. G1 Shockwave was always a favorite, but I think he died when Unicron attacked. Would've been cool to see Dille's story for Five Faces Of Darkness though.

Excellent research and great fan thoerizing. One of the most informative and innovative retrospectives yet, imo.

My favorite scene for him was when Bruticus used him which then makes me wonder how powerful any Gestalt or Decepticon would be dual wielding Megatron and Shockwave.

A very comprehensive review! As a kid, I saw the cartoon only here and there, so I didn't know much about continuity. I had almost every comic though (US & UK), so between that, and the continuity in my imagination (I had a whole storyline with my toys), that's what I used. Of course, in my toy storyline, Soundwave was Decepticon leader (I couldn't play with guns, so I didn't have Megatron or Shockwave), but he acted a lot like comic book Shockwave (what I like to think of as "evil Spock")

Supposedly, there's a deleted that shows Shockwave being killed by Unicron. I always wondered what would've happened had he been in season 3. I doubt the Decepticons would've fallen that low. I would've liked to have seen a faction of ex Decepticons: Shockwave, Starscream, Blitzwing and Octane.

Logically, Shockwave makes more sense for the plot all these years later for Five Faces of Darkness. The kid in me who saw the original episode air was always gleeful to see it being Blitzwing who turned on Galvatron.

well, if you take into account Blitzwing's actions in "Prime Target" (attempting to save the fake chained girl), it also makes as much sense as Shockwave. Heck, both could be suspicious and turn on Galvy.

Shockwave will forever be the Bad Ass wrecking machine from Marvels Transformers comics, issue # 5! The cover looks amazing and the description says it all. That version of Shockwave was a beast and his best IMO.

I would love to see five faces of Darkness get redone with the original script. It would fix a lot of continuity errors.

I do miss Shockwave and Corey Burton's voicing the character. Wish SW was in S3.

As a big fan of Shockwave, ironically in my headcanon, I want Shockwave to have died at the hands of Unicron, as to me Shockwave is the guardian of Cybertron, and I think Shockwave would have rather died defending Cybertron (like a captain going down with the ship) than abandon Cybertron. For Shockwave, I wish there was some episodes which showed him as leader whilst Megatron was offline for 4M years.

I was already hyped for wrestlemania tonight. And then the alert for this popped up! What a great day!

I think it would be a blast to see the G1 series original Draft Episodes made. Because it would be like seeing a sneak peek into what the writers was thinking..

Wow that was fascinating.....

Love Corey Burton’s vocal range. Especially his deep British voice that he uses for Count Dooku and Zeus.

I was fine with Blitzwing because he was a season 2 character and he made the episode feel normal to me. Shockwave may have been better but using him to betray Galvatron and maybe restore Megatron would have been epic. That’s why you revive Optimus Prime. Shockwave restores Megatron so the autobots revive Optimus.

A G1 Season 5 could have Galvatron somehow "destroyed," Zarak/Scorponok usurp command of the Decepticons, but then have Shockwave rebuild Megatron so he could retake command.

I’d love to see Shockwave in season three. Blitzwing didn’t do it for me. I think Shockwave would’ve been cool and I think Flint Dille should re-write FFOD.

@7.39: That wrecked me like rancid energon. So out of the eighteen original Bots, only Jazz, Cliffjumper, and Bumblebee were supposed to survive, as we saw in the film. As far as I'm concerned, G1 animated Shockers is done. However, as far as Simon Furman is concerned, Shockwave, along with Ravage and Starscream, are the only Decepticons to survive the original G1 comicverse (Regeneration One).

The script changes are interesting regarding season 3. The G1 cartoon would have been more logically consistent but I don’t mind the spotlight it gave to the different characters. Nobody would care for much Octane or Blitzwing today if not for those episodes. I always assumed Shockwave didn’t make it as a kid.

7:59 I didn't know there were any deleted scenes from the movie that had actually been animated.

In the 20th anniversary comic for the 86 movie, there is a panel showing Shockwave getting vaporized by Unicron

I was at the one in Baltimore, but I missed out on LA for a multitude of reasons.

Awesome part 2, very well done and researched. Full of new information on this classic character. I honestly prefer the idea of shockwave surviving the movie, it makes so much more sense! It would have made for better story, at the cost of octane being less seen (no loss in my book). Great retrospective Rodimus!

I'm shocked! According to this drawing, I'm guessing Satoshi Urushihara drew this frame. 9:47, not to mention Springer was supposed to be talking to Blitzwing since Sandstorm talking to Octane was out of order considering Sandstorm was recently rescued from an exploding Planet Paradron. It does bring credence that Screamer would call Blitzwing his old friend. 10:58,oh c'mon! 11:08, so that's what happened!! They had a story going on but Hasbro interfered! 11:49, oh snap!! You used my photoshop edit! That's sweet! Though I have spoke about my story of how I grew up watching Season 2's final eps from Alpha Trion till BOT before, I'll say my thoughts on this recent finds from last month by Flint Dille. Way back in the early 2000s, my mother bought me not only Transformers disc collection of Season 2 containing the late eps from Alpha Trion till BOT but also TF Headmasters discs containing Ep. 1 - ep. 18. I always felt that Shockwave had such a big presence in the final episodes including Revenge of Bruticus when he always felt Megatron was right and Starscream was literally in the wrong. His loyalty would be challenged again and again by Screamer which I always feel was the driving point of Shockwave's resentment against those who do NOT realize what they're doing. Seeing how Shockwave was treated by Galvatron, I'm actually saddened to hear that he was gonna be treated the same way Blitzwing did. For Blitzwing to be pushed around...it was typical since I gained the episodes disc collection of 'The Insecticon Syndrome' till 'the Gambler' where in the episode Triple Takeover, Megs basically crushed Blitzwing's head onto Astrotrain. That's regular day in the office for any con but to see Shockwave getting whooped by the same guy he used to know...really saddens me, this coming from a Galvatron fan. I always knew Blitzwing's lines were...way too odd for him considering he was 'ask questions never, fight first' thing to him. Yeah, he used big words in Season 2 but not in the capacity that matches Shock's so yeah. Speakin' Blitzwing's lines in Shockwave's voice feels more natural. I do have an idea of how the finale to 5FOD would go about but it'll take a while though I know how Shockwave and Galvatron's dialogue would go like in the scene of Galvatron banishing Blitzwing. @@ZZtheDark well it was a fan made two extra parts of the Rebirth which includes the Quintisons and Unicron and also could tie into one of the many fan conditions where we see that Shockwave have survived just barely as he was rescued. As he saw Galvatron's madness keep going he starts to feel that until a way to heal his mind is found he decides he would be a better leader of the Decpeticons. However he also sees that Scorpinock is also desiring to be leader if the Decpeticons. When the Quintisons ally with Unicron they manipulate the Decpeticons again but Shockwave sees right through them and contacts the Autobots with the help of all the people The Ghost of Starscream, along with Octane and Blitzwing (both of whom's return to the Decpeticon's is acknowledged and explained though we do learn their loyalty's still wain) and they contact the Autobots to try and stop them. Galvatron is furious when he finds out about Shockwave's betrayal and attacks but the logical villain escapes and meets up with the Autobots. Deispte their efforts, eventually though Unicron gets a new Body and a huge battle comes in withe Autobots and Decpeticons having to join forces again. Now I am curious if I should make what happens next inspired by a Transformers Manga from last year or not and imipy similar events may have taken place though with the Rebirth included. But either way they do Eventually defeat Unicron and the Quintisons, but Shockwave is not allowed to join the Decpeticons, showing that not all of Galvatron's sanity returned yet. The Autobots soon decided to allow Shockwave to stay with them for the time being and he agrees. Octane and Blitzwing meanwhile decide to help too by secretly giving any data they can to Shockwave and thr Autobots for help..... however both sides know that he is less their ally then Galvatron's enemy and that there's a chance that Shockwave will eventually return to his old camp someday. I do admit it's not fleshed out since I thought of it yesterday but hopefully I'll improve the ideas as time goes on.

5:14 I assumed the War For Cybertron trilogy Was set up as a Prequel to Cyberverse leading up to when Bumblebee met Windblade, I think that was Their Original Intention

I believe that the chances of him surviving even just barely the the initial crown attack would make sense for this particular character and his intelligence but also by his logical drive seeing what had become of his beloved leader megatron he would have made the decision to stay underground never rejoining the decepticons at least in a visible manner as he would have seen how far his leader had fallen into madness perhaps he would continue providing them with technology but he would not be a money that ranks proper in the public eye otherwise he was probably revived by the golden age as he would have been there to receive the energy that revives others even if buried due to the attack of unicron's hand

After watching this, I'm thinking about a lot of other continues that went on in the show I think the entire series should be reanimated with a beginning a middle and an end. I've seen a couple episodes of the Japanese exclusive that I wish were dubbed in English because one of them didn't even have subtitles and I didn't know it was going on, but I think of the series was redone to tell a story rather than to sell toys a lot would make more sense. Especially the deal with the Autobots being able to fly in the original miniseries in robot mode, but later on when it became a regular series they couldn't.

Isn't it also possible that Shockwave survived, yet spent the remainder of the series in an Autobot prison? After the movie, the Autobots are in full control of the planet. They're the good guys, so they wouldn't just execute any wounded Decepticon survivors.

It would have been tactically sound for Shockwave to remain on Cybertron after the Unicron battle and the Autobots reclaiming Cybertron. Shockwave had millions of years to make several underground bases.

Cool video as usual man. Me personally, from the third series on, anything that I saw in the animated G1 series I took with a grain of salt. I personally have the take that the cartoon was actually what led to the downfall of the popularity of the G1 line. If they kind of stayed with the original premise of the season 2 and spent more time flushing out a better storyline, the G1 series would have lasted longer I think. I don't think the movie itself is what destroy the enthusiasm for the series, I think it was the poor writing from the third series onward that nailed things. A lot of Transformers from the cartoon just magically disappeared in the cartoon even if they weren't slated for death. Look what happened to Jazz. I know they removed them because the fact that Crothers past away shortly after the movie was released, but the reason for why a lot of the Transformers that were in the original to first two seasons weren't in the third was that Hasbro got really cheap about what figures they were going to put out and what they were going to put out, and just cut corners and just poorly just put things together. This is a prime example poor organization and maybe not respecting your clientele or fan base. Personally I don't think that shockwave did die. I think they just wrote him off. Just like a lot of the Autobots who didn't die, they just disappeared entirely. It's like ratchet did survive in the comic series, he was meant to survive in the cartoon as well, but they just wanted to keep things cheap and it showed it in the writing. It's a technique you see especially today and a lot of new movies. Abeilt poorly written. It's a term called 'scrapbooking.' where the writing is basically like a choose your adventure novel where it's a bunch of possibilities and what ifs, and it's not indefinitely set in stone. That's why certain movies are costs between 3 to 6 billion dollars to film nowadays because they're basically filming about seven films at once. Even the only one cut of the film is released. That's basically what happened with the Transformers series from the movie onward. And why things are so disjointed because nobody knew what the hell they were doing. Personally I think that Shockwave survived, they just don't want to put the work in to explain what happened. That's what it basically comes down to I think.

Beautifully put. So many errors throughout season 3 as well not really having a clear direction really hampered the G1 cartoon line. Heck even the 86 movie felt incomplete to me.

It's true there certainly may indeed be two ways of looking at this one. Either way I think it's safe to say he scrambled. Either did or was. Either or. Oh and also at some point Lazerbeak indeed did return. Let's not forget that.
