Did Our Comic Book Conservation Projects Impress CGC?!

I took the opportunity of attending the Collectors Summit to submit some comic books to CGC, including two in the “Vintage” Tier. Today we'll find out if our dozens of hours of work on our Golden Age America's Best Comics 12, from 1945, which came to us graded as a 1.5 Restored, paid off! Also included in this unboxing: the outcome of our Hulk 180, the first appearance of Wolverine, clean and press project!

Beautiful job done on both books! I was especially interested in the results for the America’s Best Comics book as this was the video series that inspired me to get my feet wet with my own conservation projects. Dr. Paul, it always a pleasure to watch you work your magic! You are definitely an inspiration for all of us here. Keep up the awesome work! 😊

Given the current climate you should have told them they were a pair of AF15s in need of a reholder, there’s a chance you’d have got them back with that on the label.😂😂😂 Seriously though, love what you do,

Nice job with those submissions! I would like to see the community reevaluate conserved and even restored comics. I personally would prefer a comic that had been carefully cleaned and deacidified over one that had not, all things equal. CGC gives universal labels to comics with scotch tape on them, which is terrible for conservation, while giving a PLOD to comics which have minuscule changes that actually improve the book. And yet people pay less than half for purple labels as a knee jerk reaction. Granted some restoration is ugly and badly done and should lower the value. But the devaluation should be much less for an A-1 than a C-3. And knowing that there is still tape eating away at the comic should be much more of a concern to buyers! What do you think of the notion that slabbing is bad conservation since conservationists seek to make the object accessible?

Thank you for the kind words! I completely agree with you regarding tape, i'm always saying it gets a free pass and really shouldn't, it's one of the most destructive things you can do to a paper object. CGC did a major overhaul of the definition of restored when they created the conserved category. They are taking their time reacting to the chemical and photo bleaching that are rampant now in our hobby, but will certainly react officially at some point. Perhaps at that point we can get them to re-address how tape is categorized, but i doubt it. I suspect it just is too prevalent for them to try to take on. For one, if they changed their stance on it, you'd have all of the old books with tape treated one way and new ones not consistent. I don't think that would be great for their business. Regarding slabbing and not being able to access the document, that is a great question! Of course one of conservators' main concerns is preservation and weighing that versus access is always a primary concern. More fragile collection items are going toward making digital copies made for regular access and locking down originals to preserve them and only make them available to serious scholars with good reason to access the originals. I think you have to tailor the approach to the item. For comics, there are digital copies available (many free in the public domain now) so i feel for rare books especially locking them down in slabs is a reasonable approach--we all know how easy it is to get them out if you have a good reason to!

@@daushaus89 that’s true Dagny but it’s also thicker and can leave imprints on comics that are stacked tightly in a box or stacked vertically over time. For the same reason I never leave price stickers on comic bags either…

Personally, I think a conserved copy of a book ought to be worth more than an unconserved copy - I would be much more comfortable leaving a conserved book to my 10 year old son
