Did my Sir Grange Zoysia survive winter?

In this video we catch up on where the Sir Grange Zoysia (SGZ) is at since the fungicide treatment. I introduce a new piece of equipment which will aid in my journey to have the best SGZ known to man. And lastly, I discuss the pro's and con's of owning SGZ.

I feel really good you have done EXACTLY as I have done. NOTE: When using the power rake attachment don’t go too deep. If you go to ground level the power rake will pull up the stolons. The same will occur with buffalo.

Great advice. I’ll definitely start at the highest setting. I’ve been waiting 2 months for my lawn to grow back after scarifing it. So I’m in no rush to damage it again.

IMO, fine bladed zoysia is the best looking warm season grass. I have tahoma 31 in the front, spreading seashore paspalum on the side lawn. Both looks cool and are much faster than zoysia. But the texture/density of a fine bladed zoysia is amazing! And to my surprise, I'm struggling with Bermuda. Lost almost 40% of cover in the winter/spring. Not sure what happened. It can be fast to recover, but shit goes south just as fast lol.

Agreed, i love the fine bladed zoysia. When it's at it's best it looks incredible. Haven't seen T31 in person before, but hear positive reviews online. With SGZ things go south fast but recover slow haha.

Thanks Brenton. Not sure what’s harder, getting SGZ through winter or talking to a camera haha. I look forward to seeing your expertise & gain some valuable insights on the knighted Grange. Ps I think you’ll love it.

Thanks for your honest video. You mentioned you have walter buffalo and grange zoysia (obv). I have a patch that is fully shaded from about late Apr to Sep. I have wintergreen couch there atm and it is struggling hard as you'd expect. I'm in the process of replacing this but trying to decide with what. As reference, I have sections of walter buffalo in full shade and it has survived fine over two winters as long as the foot traffic is minimal. In your opinion, would grange zoysia cope better or walter buffalo?

@@bfit7753 my SWB is in the same boat Apr-Sep with little to no light but its powering. In my opinion it’s the better choice for shade tolerance. It doesn’t get any traffic either. My SGZ is starting to suffer from fungal disease. There’s a lot of trade offs for me having SGZ. But ultimately it’s so worth it during Oct-Mar.

Good job. I've been eyeing that Ryobi scarifier too and use makita for work, so I've been wondering if those battery converters work. What state are you in? I've been going back and forth between the Zoysia and the Tiftuf for when I lay down my new turf.

SEQ mate. No dramas with the adapters. I’d personally have TifTuf if I could. But I don’t get enough sun :(

Your Sir Grange is south facing? I think in Brisbane if Sir grange is North facing and isn't shaded out then its a much faster grower. I think one of the keys to its success is North facing with very little shade to speed things up massively. I've trialed it along with IronCutter on small trial strips and decided to go Sir Grange (Im Brissie based). I think any position thats South facing and shade then Sir Walter or Saphire is a better choice. Great content by the way

Thank you 🙏 Agreed on the direction. The front gets the views & therefore is the feature. Unfortunately I just have to wear the fact it’s not a nice lawn during the months when the sun is low. But when it’s getting sun it’s amazing. Note: it’s a thirsty lawn. I completely agree that Sir Walter Buffalo is probably the best shade tolerant lawn.

Brisbane mate. I don’t believe Melbourne is ideal growing conditions for SGZ (sgz prefers tropical climates) and considering the price per sqm it’s an expensive gamble. If you can guarantee 4-5+ hrs of direct sunlight all year than maybe it’s on your cards. I’d check if you have suppliers in your area & go from there 👍
