If you could get through the two volumes of U.S Grant's memoirs and still consider him to be stupid, then I don't know what to say. Gore Vidal said it best: "It is simply not possible to read Grant's Memoirs without realising that the author is a man of first-rate intelligence. As president, he made it his policy to be cryptic and taciturn, partly not to be bored by politicians and partly not to give the game away... his book is a classic." This seems like a flippant and mean way of dealing with an American legend regardless.

The man was a military genius, and a terrific writer. He was a great man, and I only wish we had more men like him, with his integrity and loyalty to Country, in present day America.

This is a terrible clip because it sounds like Joan is being disrespectful but after I listened to it a few times I understand they are are actually saying how articulate Grant was and others liked to portray him as stupid but he really was not. This is not a very good clip…. But yes, US Grant is a Gem. 🙏

Of course he wrote them. Grant was a Republican.
