Ughhh animating those yellow circles with the time Toogle bar ouch tedious !! Job well done . I like the idea of Mance's letting his enemy battle each other very cersei like style and very smart as well. Got me thinking about something though. Mance as our atypical hero journey archetype. He did his part as a crow , then some as an outlaw king with the wildlings all for the greater purpose of as you named it "his new watch" . But what happened with his conviction once both parties that once served a purpose came together this moment being the moment he was captured. Did mance continued to look for the greater good and safety of his people as the greater purpose or part of his ego ambition and self pride took over once in his new glamour form and incited him to write the letter and seek some vengeance as well. I don't think the capture humbled him into surrender his spirit. After all it took a huge leader to unite the wildling clans. After all they do not kneel figuratively and literally. I do hope he did .right or wrong theres fire and potential in the free folk hardly distinguish with one defeat.

only time will tell. but the type of person that would sacrifice his own life for years in order to effectively "save humanity" does not strike me as the type to suddenly change from being selfless into selfish because of that, I think there is 0% chance that mance rayder wrote it but if I had to bet, if I did a poll right now, mance rayder would be the favorite by a long shot (and the only people watching videos nowadays are hardcore, well-versed fans such as yourself) side note: mance = rhaegar in my head canon :))

@@bridge4 I like this witchy idea of personality absorb and as much as I want to take credit for it ...no I mean more in the sense of at the end of the day Mance is still a men .in the aftermath of defeat ( or so they thought muahahaha) Grmm is famous for writing in Gray .Assuming his actions were selfless until the end what kind of changes would having a second chance provide .would they be good or maybe a tiny bit of seed of bad and a sense of " im going to get you good" .by his actions helping jon get Arya etc our guess would be NO! He is still a great guy etc , but i love a little smirk and well thought plan. You see after reading on topics with no firm ends yet and no winds to resolve them 😫. I am going to add that wouldn’t bringing Jon down South to Winterfell assist reuniting the North? SO many Northmen are looking for a “Stark” to follow. If Jon reunited/led the North he could talk them into allowing the wildlings to come through lawfully. He knows about the others and this is kind of the spin they had on the show. George is a wizard, only this is known!

Exactly this. I think the mistake at the heart of this video is to assume that if Mance wrote the letter it was for selfish reasons. bridge4 argues well that he wouldn't have written it just so that he could escape himself, but that's never been why I thought he wrote it. I think he wrote it because he saw first-hand that the Boltons were exactly the leaders the North didn't need with the Others about to arrive, and he needed to force Jon Snow, as the person of Stark blood with most sympathy for the Wildlings, into the wider political arena

Mance knows a blood union with the Starks was needed to have the free folk live in peace south of the wall. He couldn't have told them, or they wouldn't have followed. Val is in on the plan. If the other northerners take Winterfell, the free folk are screwed, they will never be allowed to stay.

It's so great to hear your voice, Kev! I love this "series" on the Pink Letter. I adore Mance!! He definitely didn't write the PL. I agree with you 100%. Mance is selfless and is, IMO, one of the few men who were true "Kings" in this story. It's because he didn't care about being "King", but he was a true leader. He cares sooooo deeply for his people. Thank you so much for the video-I definitely needed to hear it today.

He’s selfless, but he’s also clever. He knows if he can get Jon Snow to abandon the NW, he’ll have no choice but to take Stannis’s offer and become Lord Stark. He knows that Jon is sympathetic to the Wildlings and understands the threat of the Others. With his new political power, Jon Stark could marry Val and order the NW to open their gates to the Wildlings and allow them to settle peacefully south of the wall.

Mance wants a blood union with Starks, Val is in on it, they need that to live south of the wall in peace. But they could never tell the free folk, or they would have abandoned him. He wants Jon to come to WF quick, or else it will be lost to other scheming northerners who would never accept the free folk.

It’s either raider or blood raven, or somebody working for blood raven who is in the north somewhere, or there’s an outside chance it could be the red priestess. To me these three are literally the only ones who would know any or all of the information that was contained in the letter and it’s not Martin’s style to drop a plot of such significance by an outside actor without laying the ground work. That’s why I crossed off little finger or the spider, it’s not his writing style to drop something that random in without laying the ground work. All three have a reason for John to leave castle black. Mel wanted him to get away from the danger she could sense building among the watch, which john was dismissing, Mance wants his son back and leverage and blood raven depending on whether he is the good or the bad guy either would want John away from the wall so he couldn’t defend it from the others, or so he could get to Winterfell, build an army and wake the kings of winter with the horn ghost found at the fist in the Crips of Winterfell to fight the others when they break through the wall. Who knows, maybe it’s wex. He has been learning his letters, his writing style would be weird if he is only new to writing, he would know about Theon and probably quite a good deal about what was going on at Winterfell and he is in white harbour and surrounded by people that probably want John to take a side

Mance is really Rhaegar Targaryen in exile. Qorin Halfhand was really Arthur Deyne, and Gerold Hightower is The Weeper. Benjen knew, and was liason between the FreeFolk the Watch, and OldTown. Maester Aemon was running intelligence, so he arranged for Nedge to effect Rhaegar's escape after the Tower of Joy. Maybe. Moonboy wrote the Pink Letter.

Well I just have a thought that ramsay actually wrote the pink letter but under very different circumstances. I think that stannis had actually won a decisive victory in the battle of ice (maybe manderlys turning over or something I don't know). Ramsay knew that stannis' heir and queen were at castle black and when he saw that the cause was doomed and battle was lost he tried to win the battle by treachery which is always how he wins the battles. He thought that he would terrorize the night's watch and get his hands on those precious hostages of stannis and the wildlings. By this point I think stannis had already won and ramsay fled winterfell. This may explain why there was no seal on the letter as he might have been in a hurry to send the raven to castle black.I don't have any proofs to support this but I think this is highly possible.what are your thoughts?

I agree with your points (mance doesn't want the wildlings to bleed, and thus wants Jon at the wall as a friend to the free folk) , but I don't think it allows for deeper planning. Mel is at the wall with the queen and enough forces to control the watch, so it seems reasonable that Mance made a deal for the free folk to come south in exchange for his considerable skill in taking the boltons out. And I don't think the foreigners war thing is in the book, yeah, its a nice idea, but Mance is a fighter and if the free folk are going to be south of the wall they need a leader that will force people to accept them, ie, Stanis and Jon. It's Mels plan to get Jon to reinforce the winter fell fight, not the battle of ice, which will probably be pretty welled timed, and the Frey and Mandrelly (who will switch sides) sup[ply line will allow stanis to siege winter fell and Jon will come from the other side to cut off reinforcements, escape, and resupply.

Bridge if you read this, I'm telling you it's actually King Stannis Baratheon who actually wrote the pink letter. If you read between the lines, you will know that it's him. In the letter, supposedly Ramsay says that he has the heads of his enemies on spike. The curious thing is that this practice is southern and is only practiced by the southerners. Neither Ramsay, nor Jon is considered to be southerners by anyone. Why would Ramsay write this to Jon Snow of all people?? Besides, Boltons of all northerners don't do that anyways. They flay their enemies. Plus, why would Ramsay want Jon snow to come down south with his army. After reading this letter, the only thing that could have happened is that Jon rides with his men out of Castleblack to fight the Boltons. King Stannis Baratheon is the one who needs Jon snow to get out of the Nightswatch and fight to become the warden of the North. He even refers to that Wildling girl (Val) whom he wants to wed to Jon as a "princess". Only King Stannis and his men call her that. Mance rayder would never call her "Wildling" princess. He never calls his people Wildling, instead he calls them free folk. Wildling is a word used by people South of them to refer to them. Even if we consider that Mance wrote it under pressure from Ramsay, it begs the question that why would Ramsay call Val "Wildling princess" when he actually never saw her and he usually considers Wildlings savages. How could he ever know about Val let alone the fact that she is beautiful?? So much so that he wants her along with Melisandre, Shireen, Theon, and the others?? And why would Ramsay want Theon if he had already won the battle since Theon was King Stannis' prisoner?? He would've captured Theon back already. He should know then that Theon is not at the Wall. Remember, King Stannis has already planned a revolution to unite the South and North to fight the frigid cataclysm prophesized by Melisandre. Besides, why would Ramsay write the letter to Lord Commander of the Nightswatch anyway. The Warden of the North is Roose Bolton who by the way is ruling with fear at Winterfell. For this to happen, Roose should be dead( which happened in the show later), but there's no indication of that in the books yet. It's actually Roose vs King Stannis right now. Ramsay is just part of Roose's army. If anyone, it should be Roose (Warden of the North) who should write to Jon Snow ( Lord Commander of the Nightswatch). So, it's very likely that it's King Stannis who wrote that letter to get Jon down south. Anyone else doesn't have any strong reason to write that.

Overall events are going to play out in mostly the same order but the details are going to be VERY different. With Fake Arya in Winterfell and not Sans a Littlefinger is not as interested in what goes on there to pull something like this. He has some control over the North as things are he won't risk losing it to Snow (who he might see as the bastard son of the man who stole his Cat) 🤷

I think when the Bolton’s are out of the way his plan is to produce Sansa, a legitimate heir of Ned Stark, probably with himself as her intended husband.

Besides he could pay a Southern Night's Watch Brother to kill Jon in exchange for a pardon and have it done quietly so the North doesn't unite around him and a new Southern Lord Commander would instantly send Fake Arya back to her husband. Thinking about this now makes me think LF whispered to some NW brothers to get them to turn on Snow which resulted in Snow having a Julius Caesar "Et tu, Brute?" dead scene where we left him, nice and quite like. He won't risk giving Snow a chance of winning a battle, LF likes to set deadly traps no knows will work. And Fake Arya is his ploy in Winterfell, he didn't plan on her leaving, Reek messed that up, LF would most likely quietly get things back on track. LF likes to flame anger and chaos into a group of people in the shadows while the target of that anger have no idea what's going on, a la telling the Starks about Rhaegar running off with Lyanna (not mentioning she went willingly) and the Mad King that the Starks are starting a rebellion against him (forgetting to mention the part about R+L). He won't demand an action, he would say something that inspires an action that can't be traced back to anyone. And he wouldn't reveal how things stand.

@@shellc5189 You make some really good points but I’m not sure that I agree with everything you say. I didn’t think LF was intending to let Sweet Robin live indefinitely. If Robin marries Sansa, what of Harry the heir? I thought if anything LF was planning something in that direction. Do you think LF suspects the truth about Jon’s parentage?

@@tzaph67 its all up in the air: we haven't had a LF POV chapter so its hard to truly say what his plans are. I think he might be using Sansa to keep Robin quite/happy while blocking other households from sending their daughters to court him. And Sansa seems to have learned how to play people so I can see her juggling both Harry and Robin with LFs approval since she would be doing the same thing with him that she is with Robin: blocking other Houses for his affection and potential alliance. If Martin confirms in the books that LF told the Starks about R+L, I think he is intelligent enough to figure out =J. But its all in the air right now until we get the rest of the books. I hope the reason we haven't gotten the next one is cuz Martin is secretly writing to the end of the story before releasing them. He certainly has had a lot of free time to write this past year.

In order to live south of the wall they'll need permission. Sure Stannis could give legal permission, but once he goes to the throne; it will be really up to the Lord of Winterfell to keep the Wildlings safe. Still picking Mance, though I can no longer remember why Littlefinger got ruled out.... Hmmm Can't wait for more! Healing up sucks, especially in winter. Say hi to Jersey for me.

1 - So Mance. At the possible cost of his wife Val, his child and some of the Wildlings at the Wall. And the possible benefit being taking control of the Wall and the belief that Jon Snow would’ve probably died a traitor’s death. 2 Stannis; At the possible cost of an vital ally who he can name drop to help gain the support of the Wildlings and some of the minor houses and village peoples of the North, his wife, daughter, Melisandre, the Queen’s Men and a safe refuge at the Wall. And the possible benefit of a Lord Jon Stark coming to directly help him rally the people, and with an Wildling army to boot. (But why the deception and risks?) 3 Melisandre; At the possible cost to herself and everything. At the possible benefit of ridding herself of the frustratingly hardheaded Jon Snow who’s obstructing her view of Azor Ahai. 4 Ramsey; At the possible cost of getting Jon Snow to kick his ass. And the possible benefit of having everything go his way. Until the White Walkers show up... --- We know Mance knows all of the details. Stannis knows everything except for Mance being alive. Melisandre might know more than what we gleamed from her POV. For Ramsey we’d have to assume that he at the very least either convinced Mance to talk or that Mance decided to join him (which I wouldn’t discount)

I still think it could have been Mance because it won't be long before the the Warden of the North (Ramsey) would start attacking the Wildlings South of the Wall and if the Night's Watch got rid of Jon Snow and turned on the Wildlings South of the Wall then they would be slaughtered between two hostile forces. It would be better to have a Friend in Winterfell to guard from attacks from the South and the Wall to protect them from the White Walkers. Two lines of defense. I think Mance would have seen this too. And who knows, could he have sent letters to the Iron Throne over the years asking for help against the WW or temporary shelter behind the Wall? I am not convinced it wasn't Mance.

The Nights Watch had all of about a hundred or so men at Castle Black at this point. A lot of them old or disabled. Not not even that at East Watch or Shadow Tower. At the same time Jon was sending some of those to the other forts along with Wildlings (to some only Wildlings) in order to repair those positions, as to not only prepare for the war against the White Walkers but also so that Stannis wouldn’t usurp the Nights Watch to take control of the Wall and give the towers to his commanders to do the same, presuming he wins or survives the battle at Winterfell with enough men to do so. Besides, as a former member of the Night’s Watch himself, Mance knows that if Jon chose to get involved with the politics and wars of the south it would be practically like hand a death sentence to Jon. A better option for Mance might be to try playing all sides or just ally himself with the Boltons.

@@eds1942 the biggest trouble with the Boltons is how savagely they turn on long time allies (Red Wedding anyone). Bolton sat next to Catelyn Stark in armor waiting for her brother to leave so that he could help kill her son, his King he swore to fight for. Bolton is going to do what's best for Bolton. And the one thing Northerns might hate more than him is the Wildlings, so Mance would be more useful as an enemy for the North to unite around Bolton than an ally. Plus, Bolton might not know that much about the Wall and how weaken it has become, he has been so focused on the politics of the Seven Kingdoms. Also White Walkers could be seen as made up stories to hide a Wildling migration due to overpopulation. Or any other thousands of non-magical enemy based reasons. Bolton needs convincing and courting. Tywin did a lot of back and forth with Bolton before the Red Wedding happened. Additional King Rob could be categorized as a traitor to the True King and Bolton a hero for helping kill him. Mance abandoned the Wall and his Oaths and made himself a Wildling King. In Boltons eyes Mance might not seem like a sure bet this early on. The Boltons would be hard to get and not be worth the effort.

And the Boltons are also stuck as well, and with people that they can’t completely trust and that don’t trust each other, then there’s whoever’s group that’s beating the drums somewhere beyond Winterfell’s walls that trying their nerves. And now without fArya... The point is that they aren’t in that great of a position, at least mentally, to be turning away intel and possibly allies. If what Mance tells Roose can help against Stannis, help with dealing with the harsh weather, or scouting, or give him what’s left of the Wildling army, then he has to at least entertain the idea. Ramsey is a different creature, but he’s not running things in Winterfell in the books, at least not yet.
