Did John the Apostle Actually Die As A Martyr?

One of the most fascinating finds of my research on the deaths of the apostles was that some leading evangelical scholars believe John died as a martyr. What's their evidence? Is it convincing? This video is part of my class IN DEFENSE OF THE RESURRECTION at Talbot School of Theology (Biola U).

John also uses the plural we in his first letter."That which WE have seen with our eyes etc" I think when John is speaking of testimony he is including the other apostles in his WE and also in his gospel.

Great video. Thanks for sharing what is known and what could have happened. I would love to know who started that legend that John died at the end of first century. Do we have credible sources or just legends? How he would have survived Patmos in his 80's or how he would have written on Patmos while under Roman guard? Was he alive, did others write the Gospel of John in his name? Why the gospel of John was not accepted by the early church and did not become mainstream until late second century. Why the Gnostics liked and quoted from Gospel of John? So much mystery about this Gospel. I have always believed the traditional view point because that is what you are suppose to believe. That being said, most church historians believed Paul wrote Hebrews until the 1800's. Now most agree that he probably did not write Hebrews. Keep the videos coming and thanks for your research. Maybe we won't know the answers on this side of heaven.

@@SeanMcDowell LOL 😆 I admit sometimes when I see you taking on the topics of sexuality so often that I kind of cringe inside because I'm afraid you're going to get labeled or that all Christians could get labeled as haters. I'm 60 years old and the thing I have learned about controversial subjects in the Bible is that it's important for me not to worship a book but instead to worship the person of Jesus Christ. The Bible can be a very difficult thing to defend. I'm really impressed how you handle everything with love, so I'm glad it's you and not me out front, LOL 😂

What do you think about John 21:21-23? It reads as if the author is addressing then-current discussions about whether John was supposed to live on and not see death (as if John had died and perplexed the Church because they had thought Jesus said he would not die). It reads almost like a post-script, editorial comment written after John has died.

I know it has been a year sense you posted this but when you said (As if John had died and Perplexed the Church because they thought Jesus said he would not die) What did you mean by Jesus said John would not die? I am doing a different study but this might shine some light on it for me.

Is it possible that Hippolytus (disciple of Irenaus, disciple of Polycarp, disciple of John) was correct in his account about John’s remains? If so then John has had a long time to fulfill Jesus’ prophecy about him, that he must “prophesy again” before many kings etc. Did John deny Jesus’ words that he would remain, or did he simply reiterate them?

You’d be right on the money! John was given that which he desired, the opportunity to continue to “Feed His Sheep” till The Savior returns which is very soon as the time of the Gentiles is closing soon.

As an atheist, you are one of my favourite Christian apologists, however I'd love to see you join "the dark side", lol. You're more honest than most about your doctrine and truly a breath of fresh air. I'd love to see more Christians being willing to be intellectually honest about their beliefs as well.

While Christian documents may be examined and debated from an “intellectual” perspective, faith is inherently anti intellectual. One meets Him, is inexorably drawn nearer to Him, becomes intoxicated with His crushing beauty and the lushness and severity of His being. How is one to rationalize that?

John doesn't identify himself as the author of the Gospel of John, nor does he provide any first-hand account of any resurrection sightings. Therefore, whether John died as a martyr or not is irrelevant.

And the Didache gives instructions on using hot and cold water to baptize people... Church "fathers" (Call no man father...) are often full of some serious errors and Paul was dealing with many of those errors in his life as well.

Hey Zeus, Roman soldiers were not allowed to take anyone down from the cross if they’re alive. A big no, no. Once they were put up there, it was to die. You weren’t coming down alive. This is why they would speed up their deaths by breaking the victim’s legs . They could no longer ‘push up’ to breath properly. Their lungs would fill up with fluid (Atellectisis) (Sp?) and actually drown in their own mucus. It was one of the reasons why crucifixion was such a long and drawn out death. You could be up their for days in agony trying to breathe while your lungs filled up with your spit. When the soldiers came by, they broke the 2 thrive’s legs to speed up their deaths, but Jesus was already dead. So , to make sure, a Roman soldier took a spear and stabbed Jesus in the side and out came ‘water and blood.’ He was already experiencing fluid drowning. They took the body down and placed him in a tomb and 3 days later he rose and was seen by over 500 people. Jesus stayed around for 45 days and many, many people to include soldiers were converted to the faith. And the rest, my friend..... is history! 😄

What would be the purpose of God NOT allowing John to enter Heaven, the place he wanted to be the most, and to prevent him from being with the person he loved the most, Jesus Christ? What sin would John have done to be cursed to walk the earth all this time? Do you get my point?

@@Mark-yb1sp I think you're looking at it from the wrong point of view. Maybe God wanted to keep him here on earth to keep doing God's work. Behind the scenes, just like the way Satan has his Minnions working behind the scenes. Just take a look at the world around you, there is something going on behind the curtain so to speak, it evil in operation. So God might have left John here to counteract that evil. Anyway like I said, I can't prove this, I can't rationalise it I just know it's true. Maybe I'm wrong, but some day we'll all know the truth
