Something important to note that many people seem to be forgetting: This was never just about plagiarism. Somerton was also a bully himself, someone who would use victimhood and lies to unleash his own communities onto others, among other really quite nasty behaviour. If it was just about plagiarism, he never would have received such a vociferous backlash against him. Also, Hbomber only made a few posts regarding Somerton after the original video and then let the matter drop. Claims by some, such as Chud Logic, that Hbomber targeted Somerton relentlessly are simply lies. CL's video on this subject was utter trash.

It’s a shame he didn’t come up with his own stuff because he was certainly more than capable. Sometimes the people that get caught up in plagiarism aren’t necessarily stupid or ignorant, usually they’re just being very lazy.

You can tell he often didn't know what he was talking about, and that the writing was worse after he tried to reconstruct the sentences to make the plagiarism less obvious. I believe InternetHistorian is talented enough that his plagiarism is laziness, but Sommerton is a hack, and he knew it too.

Illuminaughti's downfall started long before the hbomber video, thanks to her treatment of her friends, colleagues & employees.... it was her "sorry, not sorry" video that killed her channel, where she broadcast an ex-employee's mental health struggles to her large audience and tried to use it as an excuse for her own abhorrent behaviour. Frankly, when you're talking about a woman who just tried to foreclose on someone's home out of pure spite, plagiarism is the _least_ shitty thing Blair has done.

to be honest if i was in his shoes i would've done the same. think about it ... if he actually donated to harry and have him confirm it on twitter or somewhere, then people would actually believe him. if he said "oh i'm gonna donate to the authors myself" no one would believe him because he now is basically known as a liar. so i don't think that in itself was a bad move. i don't know if he actually donated anything though i haven't checked.

Whether the person who messed up is genuine or not is irrelevant. What matters is building trust again, and saying you're going to do something, doing it, and getting 3rd-party confirmation that you did indeed do it is a lot more effective on this point than claiming you're going to take a certain reparative action, and then just expecting people to believe you. It needs to be understood how much lying was in both apology videos because it kind of sounds in this like he was trying his hardest to apologize when he wasn't. The second one was woefully abysmal because he claimed to be trying to truly accept his deepest flaws but then said his plagiarism was due to a childhood injury. Believing this injury happened, let's just run with that: For something like 4 years at least- AT LEAST James has been writing scripts by copy and pasting full paragraphs from outside sources, changing words enough to try to avoid getting caught or make it align with his own opinion- and then totally forgetting he had done that. He would then go over the scripts with Nick-never noticing he had done this, and never noticing while filming. Sounds plausible? EXCEPT- James was called out for his plagiarism and lack of proper crediting multiple times, and he handled it by taking the videos down and removing these sections, the exact sections he had taken from other sources. Of course this could just be because when authors told him out their work he could directly compare them, but then why not stop writing scripts in a way that causes this outcome? Because that didn't stop until Harry's video. It's just not reasonable to believe that in years of being told he was plagiarizing in his writing, he wouldn't write in a way that prevents that if it was caused by a disability. He understands the concept of wearing glasses to help his visual disability, and that working for himself from home helps is physical disabilities, but somehow the head injury that affects his writing is just totally off limits for treatment of any kind. It would be impossible to change anything in his approach to prevent it from happening over and over again.

@@PhoenixFireZero The Costa Concordia video was ripped off from a Vanity Fair article, the Gentleman Pirate has excerpts taken from a few alphabet publications (But not the Our Flag Means Death documentary people keep bringing up), and the Harold Camping video had it's timeline of events (But not direct wording, unlike the Man in Cave video) taken from some radio broadcaster that uploaded it's script online. But this was all after Hbomb really made the big video about Man in Cave, so it kinda pales in comparison but you do see the progression of "Oh, I'll just steal this bit. Nobody (such as yourself) will look it up." to "Oh, I'll just steal this entire article."

Dan Olson is a former TWGTG goon who tried to get websites taken down by spamming CSAM and Nyberg was a major anti-GG figure who was caught preying on his own brother among other things.

To be fair, the reason metokur's stream didn't spread past his audience is because it wasn't an uploaded. It was a livestream which is gone now. Yes, there are archives from other smaller channels, but none on his own and most of these archives don't mention anybody in title or description aside from Jim. Also, nice going summarising every point said in that 3.5h stream into "he claimed hbomberguy said the n-word and such things". Very nice summary.

@@Space_Viking_King the stream is honestly a bit all over the place talking about personal memoirs, but the part concerning hbomberguy is mostly about how he's the archetypical "trolls remorse" type guy and his history going from the old metokur forums into youtube later on and always screwing people over on the way. There's a lot of lore on the guy, and maybe that stream isn't the best for getting into detail. My point was more that it seemed kind of disingenuous of tgfm to summarise the entire point against hbg as "they claimed he said the gamer word".

The first thing anyone should do when news like this comes out is to wait to hear from family. The second thing is to check with police departments and other public records to make sure things are legit. Lil Tay faked her demise to launch her music career. James Somerton did it to avoid facing the consequences of his actions and to get back at Hbomberguy and his fandom. It's just Gross. Death isn't something that should be played with.

I lolled at the Peter Coffin screenshots, he's been doing his best to capitalise on the whole situation by taking the pro-Somerton side and trying to turn it into drama rather than just one guy finally being called out for his shitty behaviour in a way that he couldn't wriggle out of

Whilst I don’t like HBomberGuy for a fair few reasons, to say that he’s responsible for James’ (potential) death is disingenuous If James DID end it all just because people were calling him out over plagiarism accusations, then it means he likely had a lot of stuff going on that was completely unrelated to that situation. Also you forgot to mention that after the controversy, James DID make a video citing his sources, but HBomberguy made fun of him for mostly citing a single creator. That might be where the “HBomberGuy caused it” stuff came from

As a suicide survivor, it's rarely due to one specific reason; it's usually due to a plethora of reasons that might've occurred over a lifetime to push someone that far. HBomber should absolutely not get blamed; James was called out numerious times by smaller individuals and got away with it before HBomber came onto the scene. Mental instability does not negate your actions; I hope James gets the help he needs if alive..

Yeah this is about my take on it. Like, yes, having your livelihood ripped out from under you sucks, but it's something that happens to all sorts of people for all sorts of reasons, and most people are able to move, change their look or heck, even name if you have to, and get a shittier job for a few years while you figure out where you go from there.

That's what GFM and people like him specialise in. They turn situations that can be summed up in 1 or 2 minutes into college essays saying nothing of importance once.

I think Keffals privated her videos because she was called out for defending Vaush among other things

"The landscape has dramatically changed for the creators who were called out" ... has it really? The AVGN incident was already well known by the fanbase and the matter had been put to rest when the culprit was found out and fired from the team. The fact that James wasn't the one doing the plagiarism helped minimizing brand damage. HBG's video served as a reminder of an unfortunate thing that happened, but people had already moved on. Iilluminaughtii was already down in the pits because of stuff that was FAR worse than plagiarism. Her downfall had already happened earlier, and the needle was so far down it almost couldn't move any further. IH has almost not felt a thing. Though to be fair it was pretty clear from the beginning the impact it would have had on him would be negligible. The dude released a video right at the same time as the HBG one and the overwhelmingly positive ratio showed as much. Three or four people parroted Tommy Tallarico memes on the comments, but that was it. The positive reception on his new video pretty much confirms what we already suspected. Somerton seems to be the only one who has really suffered a "before and after" to be honest. And while this is speculation, I suspect his political commentary and takes (as shown in Todd's video) are what's REALLY fueling the hate against him. Doesn't change the fact that HBG's video was the trigger, but it would explain the intensity of the hate he's been receiving compared to other similar cases.

The people saying it's hbomberguy's fault have a warped view of reality. Criticizing someone for things they provably did which were blatantly wrong is not a bad thing. Not only was what he did illegal but it was extremely hurtful to dozens and dozens of the people he stole from. He is a grown man and had a thousand chances to improve, yet he chose to continue down the path of hurting others so he deserves all the criticism he gets. I'm so confused, do these people think there shouldn't be consequences for hurting others??? That's literally all this is

though gamerfrommars might not see this, yes I can confirm Hbomberguy claims that he "wasn't really involved metokur" is a lie, I know it is a lie because hbomb , along with many others in that now defunct group, would target others online by finding a victim, and then spamming their comments with hateful stuff, reuploading their content and then doxing them in the description, and just making short videos mocking them. I know this because I was there, I was one of those targets, and hbomberguy was one of the many who was actively involved in the harassment train, doing whatever they could to make you leave the internet for good. so rambles aside: I don't think hbomberguy is a terrible person, I do think people change, neither I or anyone else need or want a apology, what I would like to see is him actually admitting he downplayed his role when he was involved with that group, as for years its been hard to ignore it as I among a small few, know for a fact there is a huge memory hole that has been placed to hide his past ties with that group All I am saying none of this would of came up again if he had just admitted his involvement and apologized years ago when it was brought up, instead of lying about it

@@HoloFizz The Wolfie incident that the site/group Metokur perpetuated, the founder/owner of the site nuked the whole thing and scrubbed it from archives and put out a letter detailing his remorse for the whole group and how much he hated himself and would be haunted the rest of his life for destroying lives and ruining things, "In the name of justice", and how burning the site down would "End the horror" but would also mean that everyone wronged would never get justice because their names and the evidence would be destroyed with it, because it was basically just a terror group that acted as proto Kiwi farms, finding easily exploitable people and hurting them. You could find shreds and remnants of some of the exploits and stories on the farms but that's also had it's own purges, so it's mostly just here and there on it. HBOMax had been a part of the group and was directly referenced for helping in the "Wolfie incident" Basically the most you can find is either people sharing their experiences and time, and the Habberman apology/shutdown letter. I know it's a poor showing of proof but there's a huge reason that HBOMax has the "Troll's Remorse" and it's not because he said the gamer word once.

It's funny that Internet Historian basically did the most thorough plagarism; stealing the whole text and got away with it. Likely because when told he did this people went to look and saw the retroactive credit and ignored it. I do feel bad, not for James specifically, but for any person that becomes the punching bad tu jour. If James Somerton commited suicide you can't blame him. All he did was make an expose video. It's the people harassing him that's at fault. Also, I highly doubt it's the harassment that made James Somerton kill himself (if that's indeed what happened). It might have been the thing that pushed him over the edge, but people don't commit suicide on a whim.

Mark my words: This is a PR tactic. He wrote that note to plant some seeds, we're not gonna hear about him for a while, and then he's gonna comeback with a sob story about how he was gonna commit suicide and we should feel bad for him. This is a pattern of behavior whenever he has a controversy. He did it before, and he's still doing it. Im in Canada and I couldnt find any obituary. And you'd think that since he's a micro celebrity, we would have heard about it by now and we did not.

No, it has not gone too far. It is 2024, we all know how toxic and vengeful the internet can be. If someone is making money of an online platform then they are open to that. It is a harsh truth. Then anyone can contact all of the coroners, who are public servants, in that area and ask "Did you have any suicide cases under the name of James Somerton in this time frame?" Suicides have to be ruled as such by a coroner so that it can be confirmed as not a murder, and anyone can contact a coroner's office. Then there is the whole fact he will have either been buried or cremated meaning all you have to do is then go through the grave and crematorium listings in the area for the time frame. It will take some effort and admin but anyone who actually wants to can at the very least confirm if he is dead.
