it wasn't control vs striking, they both did good everywhere, but islam rocked Alexander, and had more control. it wasn't a robbery by any means. Everyone is just rating islam's performance relative to how good he usually is, while also coming to watch the fight expecting he'll walk all over Alexander, making it even more difficult for them to eliminate the bias and issues coming from these two variables.

I don't remember the shevchenko one but with Yan O'Malley, it was because of the damage done on the feet before the ground control. In Volk's case, he didn't do any significant damage in that round before getting his back taken

Such as Khabib, who has the most padded record ever and only defeated 5 memorable opponents. Not to take anything away from Khabib, he's a good fighter and has some of the highest fight IQ I've ever seen, but you're acting as if every last one of their professional fights are in the UFC. Khabib had 13 fights in the UFC, which is around where everyone else would get a title shot if undefeated. Stop acting like there isn't bias, and don't even try to act like Islam beat Volk. Not a stan of Volk, nor do I have bias towards anyone, but some things are just clear to see.

Even if we go by damage alone without control time, Islam won, because medical professional found that Volk was more damaged by suspending him for a month while Islam only gets 2 weeks. Islam bruised & Volk got cut and bled. All strikers can keep crying. Note: many Volk's fan laughed at this & rightly so, not realising that i was trolling Volk's fans who often reply with Islam's bruised face as another proof that Volk won. Those sore losers dont like it when im using their own argument against them😄

Islam inability to secure a tight submission attempts wasn't from a lack of trying but from Volk defending himself. Secondly, when asserting damage, the result of the action matter more than the action itself. Between the two, Islam was in position to yield better results than Volk ever could.

@@autismoid i disagree. Its been a while since i saw the fight but the only thing that stood out for me when it came to volk was his great defensive wrestling and then the last seconds of the fifth. For islam i remember him wobbling volk multiple times and getting a take down and maintaining back control (although he didnt do much with it). I believe some people let the crowd get to them because volk couldve picked his nose and the crowd wouldve went wild.

If u control a fight you won that fight but ufc looks at strikes take downs and other bullshit that's how they give points

Agreeeeeed, we need to reform the criteria so fighters aren’t rewarded for laying on top of someone to keep the fight tied up at a standstill for “control time.” In my opinion control time is irrelevant unless paired with effective ground and pound or legitimate submission attempts (not just half-assing failed attempts) So taking a fighters back just to sit there and catch your breath while he’s unable to strike or effectively fight is not impressive or a sign of progress in the fight. More accountability needs to be placed on the judges and we need the proper criteria correctly taught to them. While he’s not a better fighter than Volk, I’ll give him that he was smart enough to take a compromising position when he “controlled” Volk so the ref couldn’t separate them when he did nothing with said position.

In alllll grappling competitions stalling is a BIG no no… they’ll stand it up at MAX 30secs UFC let’s kamaru usman foot stomp counting that as being “active” and ONLY holding them against the fence for 4.5mins of a 5min round… Rules 100% need to change because no grappling or striking competitions allow for stalling and without allowing headbutts or groin shots clinch fighting on the fence can literally become stagnant REAL QUICK

A fighter’s ability to lay of top of someone is not a factor of skill, if you’re not progressing in that position to work your opponent then you’re not doing any more than stalling the fight. Why do you think refs stand fighters up? And what is it the ref says before he stands them up? “I need you to work.” Laying on someone is irrelevant to the fight itself, if you’re dominantly controlling on the ground, laying strikes or submission attempts then you are actively moving the match forward and “putting points on the board.” But to lay on someone just to prevent the fight from happening is not conducive to a professional combat sports athlete.

Nah if you take the control time out of the equation, Islam still outstruck Volk, constant crosses and knees to the face & body as counter strikes won him the match. Volk only started getting the better of Islam in striking exchanges at the end of the 5th round, where he dropped him and proceeded to GnP him from the top

It’s damage > effective grappling > control time. Control time isn’t even supposed to be considered unless the first 2 are equal. I swear some of the commentators and even refs seem to ignore the criteria.

Just control shouldn't win you the fight. But the ref, or rounds, also shouldn't stand you up if you fail to get back to your feet.

People were just surprised beyond imagination that Volk gave such a good fight. Other than that, there's really no question that Islam won

That’s hyperbolic 😂 The win that he received was not “clear” at all, in fact it’s a hotly contested win. Volk did enough to win it and Islam was even calling for a rematch on the way to his corner after round 5 before the results. Some fighters may be able to sway the judges with meaningless control time (no progress, just laying on someone to rack up time and slow the fight) but it’s never going to be a show of actual quality or skill to do so. It’s more of a cowards way to victory trying to take minimal risk. I honestly expected a tie going into the results, that or a split in Volks favor, but it’s history now regardless. Hopefully they fight again some day to yield a legitimate and definitive winner.

And I’m very ready to see Benny back in there whenever they get that fight rescheduled. And it should be a good contest but it’s more of when Volk wins his next fight than if. While on this topic of future fights I’m really hoping Holloway TKZ gets lined up sometime this year, they expressed their interest and it’d be a good draw as a potential co-main or otherwise main card feature on a ppv.

That position is only 'dominant' if you're threatening a submission. Volk very clearly had it under control and went out of his way multiple times to show that he was never legitimately threatened. All Islam was did was burn time and score points.

The rules in ufc are made to answer the " if this was a street fight senario " question, some people don't understand why getting on someone's back and ground control him gets so much points because it's a very dangerous situation in a real street fight like Islam already got volk in that position early in the fight and in a street fight sinario Islam would be stabbing him with a knife instead of just punching his face and volkanovski screams would do shit the only thing he would do if he have a knife in that position is making Islam lose an eye

Imagine this: you witness a fight at the bar, one guy finishes the fight clean faced and pounding on a bloody beat up face of a guy on his back. UFC isn't a bar fight, not a school yard fight, it's a professional sport with rules and points. Islam had ring control, Volk was running around like a chicken with it's head cut off, in the last round Volk managed some control for 30 seconds. Volk was humiliated to overcome that humiliation Volk wanted to go again, nothing else.
