Did I Take Tamoxifen? Breast Cancer Advice From A Patient | Tammy Salamone | The Pink Survivor #3

Hi There! I'm Tammy Salamone and this is number 3 in my new set of videos called, Breast Cancer Advice From A Patient. In this one, I'm talking about my decision to take or not take tamoxifen. This was my experience and your situation may be very different. Always ask your doctor for the best and most sound advice. #breastcancer #breastcanceradvice #tamoxifen
I learned a lot going through my treatments and surgeries and it's information that I feel needs to be shared.
I was diagnosed in early 2017 and had a double mastectomy in May that same year followed by 12 weeks of chemo (taxol) and a year of Herceptin. It was one of the worst times of my life. I never thought I would come out of the depression I was experiencing and certainly didn't think I would be helping others afterwards. Thank you for being here and I love hearing your comments and experiences below.
My Best Always,
Tammy

Treatments are a choice folks . If something is not for you , or you try it and can’t make it work and need to get off of it . That is ok too . In the end we are all trying to balance the risk of reoccurrence with quality of life . ❤

I am strongly considering not taking it. I am 67. I've had four heart attacks. I'll be lucky to live 10 more years, and that would have been true if I hadn't developed cancer. If I am going to be miserable for the rest of my life, why would I want to extend that? I would rather have 3 more good years after treatment than 10 years of pain and depression. I suffer from depression anyway. It might be different if I were younger or had a family.

I can completely understand how you feel. It’s absolutely amazing you have survived 4 heart attacks?! Wow😮! You are stronger than you think! It’s definitely up to you and you should choose what works best for your life. That’s what I did. I’ve seen the cancer come back in those who have taken Tamoxifen so it’s no guarantee. I hope you are getting some help for your depression. I can relate to that as well 🙏💕🙂

Hi Tammy Thanks fo sharing your decision. I also agree that everyone needs to make their own decision . After full mastectomy and a shortened course of chemo ( four treatments) I had enough. Unfortunately the quality of my life was already diminished by the long term effects of a serious surgery 30 years AND needing to go off my hormone replacement suddenly because of breast cancer. My short term memory losss and intractable insomnia are still present. Enough is enough. As an aside there are numerous posts on line by a British breast surgeon who has had breast cancer herself. She candidly admits she had no idea what it was like to be a patient and the severity of the symptoms she had from a medically induced menopause stunned her. She refreshingly admits she was very glib about the side effects when she referred her patients to chemo and radiation. Probably slot of the docs distance themselves from the severity of side effects that cancer patients experience. Best wishes to you all

Wow Tammy you are totally brave for not taking it and I admire your courage. I wish I would have made that same decision, but I was so afraid of cancer coming back that I opted to take it, and it hasn't been easy, hopefully I only need to take for 5 years which is coming up in July. My oncologist said that I might be taking for 10 years, but now hearing you, I might opt not to take it anymore. What do you think?? Thank you fir sharing your story

Congratulations! You have almost finished 5 years 😃 How did you feel on it? I would definitely ask my doctor if it will make a difference in my survival rate. Tell your doctor how you feel and why. My oncologist asked me my reasons and what I would do instead. I workout six days a week to lower my recurrence rates. She was satisfied with that because I was stage 1 and did chemo etc. Everyone is different and I want you to do what is best for you and your type of cancer 😍♥️🙏💕💕💕

Every situation is different and I try and not make decisions for others but the research is just not there supporting tamoxifen as this great miracle drug in my opinion. One of my best friends had a lumpectomy with radiation and also took tamoxifen just as her doctor recommended. She recently had a reoccurrence and now had a double mastectomy.
