Spinal Tap werent making fun of "hair metal", per se... that was more of an LA thing... "Poison" was hair metal. Spinal Tap were an amalgam of older 70s british rock bands that got grandfathered into the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" that hit aroind 1980, younger metal bands like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard that revived metal for the 80s... but some older bands, like Judas Priest and Motorhead came along for the ride, despite that they had been aroud since the 60s, or that they were in that older age group. Part of the joke is that even in the 80s, these guys are seen as 'over the hill'.

"Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?" "These go to eleven." Fun Fact: Director Rob Reiner is indeed Marty DiBergi. What Script Fact: Although the scenarios were written in advance, much of the actual dialogue was ad-libbed. Art Imitates Art Fact: Harry Potter Author J.K. Rowling cited the movie as inspiration for the unfortunate events that cause all Defence against the Dark Arts teachers at Hogwarts to leave the job before completing a full school year. Music Enthusiast Fact: The actors are all competent musicians, so they co-wrote all the original songs and they're actually playing on the soundtrack. Although I found no charting information, Big Bottom (1984) specifically is considered a rock classic. Historical Fact: Several rock stars have commented on what an uncannily accurate spoof of the rock and heavy metal world this film was. Ozzy Osbourne said when he first watched the film, he was the only person who WASN'T laughing; he thought it was all too real. "I didn't laugh, I wept. It was so close to the truth." noted U2 guitarist The Edge. Marillion had five drummers in the space of a year between their first two albums, which guitarist Steve Rothery later admitted was "like Spinal Tap."

Dean Martin was also part of the Rat Pack. Four guys, for sure. Some include a fifth.

This was the first of many well known movies for director Rob Reiner. Chris Guest, who played guitarist Nigel Tufnel, was the 6 fingered man in Reiner's Princess Bride, and produced a series of movies on his own. The bassist was played by Harry Shearer, who does the voices of many Simpsons characters. Michael McKean is known for Laverne and Shirley, Better Call Saul, etc. They did the DVD commentary track as their fake British characters.

The Rat Pack were 5 or 6 really famous crooners from the same era who all partied together. Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Dean martin were all part of the club (I couldn't name the others without looking it up) The Brat Pack was a bunch of popular young actors from the 80s who were cast in a lot of the same movies

Not being able to find the stage, in England, was based on a true incident that happened to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. KISS said that the same thing happened to them. So many '80s bands said, ' We're totally Spinal Tap!' They talked about having Spinal Tap moments.

They actually toured, and sold out venues. Some people even thought they were a real band. They all actually played the instruments. They are touring again in 2024, last I heard.

The humour is sooooo dry in Christopher Guest comedies, I had to watch Spinal Tap multiple times to catch all the jokes - 'Mime is money' '...dresses like an Australian's nightmare', etc.... Plus, it's so close to reality, all the bands of the time loved this movie, it's barely satire or comedy, musicians are like this, especially hair metal bands. Great stuff! Check out - Best In Show / Waiting For Guffman / A Mighty Wind / For Your Consideration / etc., all the movies are great! (All these films have similar or the same cast and writers/ improv artists, they basically start with an outline of the scene and where it has to go, and improv from there.)

As DanJackson1977 desribes well, Spinal Tap is spoofing the heavy metal of the 70's. In fact hair metal doesn't come along until the late 80's. The fact that Spinal Tap seems to be mocking it in advance is more a sign of how unoriginal hair metal was. Hair metal was something of a response to something that is mentioned in passing in the movie, namely how male the audience for heavy metal was. Only prog rock had a more male audience than metal. Def Leppard was kind of a precursor to hair metal in that they were the first metal band (I think they actually deny they are a metal band, but at least metalish) whose audience was about half female. They had catchy songs with metal trappings, and sex appeal. The idea of doubling the possible audience for metal was appealing to record labels, and hair metal was the response.

After this movie developed a cult following, especially with musicians, Marshall started making guitar amps that went to 20

They succeeded so well with the film that at least Aerosmith thought it was a joke on them. Many bands have stated that those things in the form or another have happened to them. The guitar presentation is joke on the guitar myths and the instrument hoarding guitarists, for example.
