Did I Make The Right Decision? The Hilux's First Trip, Success or Failure?? Ep5

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This whole trip was about seeing just how all the fancy gear put on the hilux over the past year would perform in the real world! I knew this build would look cool and that I would be putting on awesome gear, but would it all work together properly? Would I be able to travel for days on end, through all sorts of climates and terrains?? This trip really put that all to the test, and I got to see the weaknesses and the strengths of this vehicle so clearly. Everything from the Bushtech Canopy, to the Fox suspension and the Eezi Awn Blade rooftoptent; it all worked excellently and blew me away with how well it all worked together! So spending my last night of the trip at Die Mond Campsite in the Tankwa Karoo, was the perfect spot to sit and reflect on the past couple weeks of travel and look forward to a new adventure in the Kruger National Park, where I head out on foot for a couple of days exploring the KNP in a unique way!

    Weather pending, the RRT is the last thing I usually pack away. Then it gives it more time to breathe and dry any condensation it may have collected overnight. As for mozzie repellent, have you tried any of the Thermacell products? I recommend them - they work amazing in still to no breeze conditions. But lose their effectiveness the stronger the breeze that goes through the camp is.

    A suggestion for packing “changes” in the draws. I’ve had some canvas bags made. Various sizes but always the width of a draw, with clear tops ( think tent windows). It stops things moving around and groups things together. Eg. All my cooking stuff is in one bag and i lift the bag out and put it on the table where I’m cooking.

    Really enjoyed the content. Not sure if I missed it in any of the videos or live chats, but it would be really valuable getting insights into the pricing of the various components of the build. Pricing is not easily available on supplier websites, even those of your partners. I’ve seen guys include this into videos but not really from a South African perspective. I wish you well in all you have planned for the channel, I’ll be watching closely!!

  • @RoamOverlanding

    @RoamOverlanding

    3 жыл бұрын

    Glad you enjoying it buddy! So the reason why South African companies dont put their prices online is because they export a lot of products across the world; so the problem there is that a customer might google and find the price is R5000 for something here but then 500Euro overseas; which is more like R10,000 and they they complain about the price difference (Not realising the import/export duties markups etc of the process) so most companies just want to keep the price away and just redirect people to their local dealer for the local pricing :)

    @@RoamOverlanding thanks for the feedback Adrian. I get that reasoning from a supplier perspective. It would be a pity if that would limit content providers in SA (even though it’s great to see interest from elsewhere in the world) from giving insights into the costs of these builds. It doesn’t have to be specifics of products u’ve used in u’r build .. but estimates of what one would expect to pay for the types of products..even rough projection of total costs of u’r build would be interesting I’m on the verge of trading in my Discovery and considering options for replacing (seeing what you’ve done with the Hilux has me seriously considering it as an option) but need to take into account the costs of these mods. I get lots of info on KZread from elsewhere in the world but info for SA is lacking. All the best with the channel. Having the pressurised water is great! I have this device for heating it up for a showe. It works well via the app to heat it up through my tank. (Although you can use the device to fill the tank or pump water out, I now have a manual switch to pump water out as needed as it can be fiddly holding the shower head and your phone at the same time). aphcarios.com/products/hot-box/

    @@RoamOverlanding The guys that make the Hotbox are in Oman. I’ve had great customer service from them. I have a 53l water tank under the Troopy - it’s surprising how quickly it heats up. The downside is that you’re heating all the water in the tank, but if you’re driving somewhere you can warm the water up and it’ll be ready when you arrive, or you could have it use a separate Jerry can for example. Probably not the best option for an early morning hot shower, but as you say, it does save space compared to having gas canisters and boilers, etc, in the car somewhere.
