Did Godzilla -1.0 Kill Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire? - ゴジラ-1.0はゴジラXコング: ザ・ニューエンパイアを倒しましたか?

Фильм және анимация

Given the critical success of Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla's peak popularity, I wanted to analyze why the Godzilla X Kong trailer might not be landing with many audiences. In this video, we discuss how opinions on Godzilla films have changed over time and how these opinions have changed the films for better and for worse. As the MonsterVerse films continued to make broad pivots to adjust to feedback received, Toho doubled down on the things that they knew were working to make one of the most well-refined Godzilla films in the franchise. In this video, we seek to answer the question of if Godzilla Minus One may have accidentally killed the MonsterVerse.

Minus One is the best or second best Godzilla film of all time. No doubt. It was a triumph of storytelling and deserves all of the acclaim that it has and will have had received. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a good pallette cleanser to revisit a tone similar to Godzilla 2014. I have thoroughly enjoyed the show and cannot wait for the next episode. I champion the fact that Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire will continue the whimsy personality of the Showa films with state-of-the-art visual effects. For the haters of Monsterverse, Toho has a hand and partnership dealing with the MonsterVerse - and considers the MonsterVerse Godzilla to be its global Godzilla, they see it with as much value as their domestic Godzilla. To Toho there are no choosing of sides with this, there are no rivalries, Toho has an IP making money for them in both Japan and worldwide, they are getting money either way. To be fair, Godzilla versus movies and Godzilla solo movies are too completely different beasts. With a versus movie, you have to tell a human story, set up Godzilla's presence, set up the other monster, and set up Godzilla's rivalry with it. This usually leaves you with little time to flesh out any characters that well, especially in a huge ensemble cast. When you think about it, these movies are quite strange and unique. Your hero and villain don't talk and are on a scale that the human characters can barely impact. The Monsterverse focusing more on Kong and allowing him to have more personality and emotion is a smart move since we can invest more in one of the monsters as a character, but like you said, the trade off is he's barely a monster any more. I don't want to say that solo movies like Minus One have is easy or anything. Crafting such a good story and characters is hard either way, but Godzilla doesn't have to do anything in those movies but be the nature side of man vs. nature. He's the shark in jaws. Once you've established his threat, the rest of the movie can be dedicated to crafting your characters and their physical and emotional reaction to Godzilla. Imagine if in Jaws, half the movie had to be spent establishing a giant octopus that was also terrorizing the area which the shark would then fight in the end. I'm not saying it's impossible for a versus movie to have a great story and great characters, I'm just pointing out the more plates you have to spin, the harder it is. I do hope that Godzilla x Kong surprises and has more going for it than just crazy monster action. But the vibe does seem to be that they gave up on any pretense of anything serious or deep.

Now having to deal with three monsters and only Godzilla can defeat the mutos then that would have them a reason to keep Godzilla alive. Then realizing Godzilla keeps balance and the only reason he showed up was to take out a threat and humanity was just caught in the middle of a battle. That would’ve been better movie plot Godzilla shows up and the humans try to kill him. Then all of a sudden two more monsters come out then resulting Godzilla having to take out both threats. Maybe since he’s a little out numbered the military helps Godzilla. Idk but it’s just a plot I’ve been thinking about since seeing Godzilla minus one.

@@RickytickyBobbywobbin-jl5oy Oh yeah the gay stuff at the middle school flashback was pretty shoehorned (though it kinda made me lol cause Godzilla was like 'eff them gay kids' then by the bridge 😂 ). I mean hey...it is San Francisco though Also something struck me as odd about the name of that middle school. Girard Middle School but I looked up the name at the time wondering why they named it that and it was some old philosopher René Noël Théophile Girard December 1923 - 4 November 2015) who was a French polymath, historian, literary critic, and philosopher of social science whose work belonged to the tradition of philosophical anthropology. Girard was the author of nearly thirty books, with his writings spanning many academic domains. Girard's main contribution to philosophy, and in turn to other disciplines, was in the psychology of desire in the form of mimetic theory. claimed that human desire functions imitatively, or mimetically, rather than arising as the spontaneous byproduct of human individuality. The second major proposition of the mimetic theory proceeds from considering the consequences of the mimetic nature of desire as it relates to human origins and anthropology. The mimetic nature of desire allows for the anthropological success of human beings through social learning, but is also laden with potential for violent escalation. If the subject desires an object simply because another subject desires it, then their desires are bound to converge on the same objects. If these objects cannot be easily shared (food, mates, territory, prestige and status, etc.), then the subjects are bound to come into mimetically intensifying conflict over these objects. The simplest solution to this problem of violence for early human communities was to polarize blame and hostility onto one member of the group who would be killed and interpreted as the source of conflict and hostility within the group. The transition from the violent conflict of all-against-all would be transformed into the unifying and pacifying violence of all-except-one whose death would reconcile the community together. The victim who was persecuted as the source of disorder would then become venerated as the source of order and meaning for the community and seen as a god. Very interesting foreshadowing to Kate's backstory in terms of her desires and guilt and Godzilla and the coexistence and balance of humans and monsters overall I guess. Monarch from the jump certainly was never promised to be about monster action but more to focus on the humans, the company known as Monarch and all it's mysteries and bridge the movies together more.

So far it’s a exciting spectacle, although now it seems to have the same exact issues that Hollywood has with the hero franchises unfortunately up against what’s considered to be the best Godzilla film of the decade. This is probably your best video. Godzilla's versatility is dependent on whether the things that he evolved into as a character are present in the original, and Godzilla's silliness isn't one of them. The only thing making Godzilla silly is the premise of the character itself, something you have to suspend your disbelief for in order to consume the content (as you would any piece of fiction). I also am happy that Minus One has made certain Godzilla fans explore proper media literacy and made them think more critically about media in general, and analyze the Monsterverse through a more critical lens. Godzilla should be held at a much higher standard of storytelling and Minus One is evidence. For those that want people to just enjoy Godzilla regardless of the quality of the products, why should we just accept anything that's given to us just because it's Godzilla? That's the same mentality Star Wars fans have, and look where the franchise is now. Same with Marvel up until the beginning of phase 5. We don't want mediocre anymore. We want good

AMEN! Your comment, just like this video, is extremely well said. While the last decade has been an amazing blessing for a lifelong Godzilla fan like me, the last few years have been really depressing as a member of Godzilla fan communities. Everyone used to just talk about the movies, frequently very critically. The Millennium era got trashed constantly, and fans of it like me didn't mind. We'd just discuss it. But there's been a change now. There's a huge segment of the fans who think you can't criticize any of it. Because apparently accepting all Godzilla content no matter how much the character is warped and disrespected, is what a "true fan" would do? Are Hollywood productions that adapt existing IPs not notorious for disrespecting the fans and the brand just to exploit it for cash? Copying current trends and dating the entries with dumb studio ideas? Do we not already have a famous example of that from 1998? Where they just said "we want a recognizable name and concept, but Jurassic Park was successful, so let's just make it into that." If I see one more of these "defenders" rebuke a legit criticism by sharing an image of Godzilla sliding on his tail or any of that other camp Showa content, as if it gives the entire franchise half a century later the excuse to not make the slightest effort to be faithful or respectful of the characters or audience... 😑

I've been a Godzilla/Kaiju Fan all my life. My Dad showed me these movies back in the day and I've been in love ever since. And honestly? These types of discussions confuse and sometimes even anger me, especially recently with Minus One's impact and success. This genre/franchise was DEAD in the early 2000s (not literally, but you hopefully get my point). There was nothing and I hated it. Then came along the MV and revived the Kaiju Genre which even led to other Kaiju movies and Toho starting the Reiwa Era. We are living in a time where TWO Godzilla Eras are running simultaneously, this has NEVER happened before. Us Kaiju Folks are eating good right now. And thats exactly why I don't get this G-1.0 vs. GxK debate. This is stupid on both sides of the argument. Can't we just be happy that our favorite franchise is in a better state then ever before? We are getting new content left and right and center, it's amazing. Minus One and Shin are masterpieces and the MV has been a lot of fun. I'm just tired of comparing. The MV is dumb showa era cheese and fun. Reiwa is thought provoking and somber. There is something for everybody and both things are fun and valid. Would I want the MV to do better? Of course. But I'm just grateful that my passion franchise is thriving more then ever. Sorry for the rant.

That’s certainly not what this video is meant to be. This video was a counter argument to the statement that the humans are weighing Kaiju films down. As I stated in the video, I’m optimistic about GXK and want nothing more than for it to be an amazing film. But I am hoping the standard is raised and the bar to measure MonsterVerse films is no longer “Godzilla has X amount of screen time.”

Alright its time Put my 2 cents in this Godzilla X Kong and Godzilla minus one should stop being compared to each other It benefits no one and simply does not help the MONSTEVERSE in its certain path The scaling Issue everyone is talking about is true in the sense that they do not move as if their giant monsters, which apparently we now have a problem with as if Godzilla KOTM and GvK didn't have similarly fast moments (GvK literally has a part were Godzilla moves fast as hell on all 4's which NO ONE had a problem with) I'll admit that Godzilla and Kong running is simply goofy there's no way around it BUT you Cannot Ignore that their in fact IS a sense of scale EVEN in the trailer we see The pyramids, a City being leveled by something and the Skar king on the beach all of which debunks that they all look small as we literally see just how gigantic Skar king is on a beach terrorizing people Most importantly the movie is not out We're complaining about things that aren't shown in there true glory, but Random clips we see for like 9 seconds at a time. We don't know the true scale of the film because we haven't seen it yet for all we know the story could be the greatest of the Monsterverse BUT We don't know (Which is my biggest problem with the trailer personally, it didn't show enough of what was actually going on) I understand stand the criticisms of the trailer but we need to except that it's not the final product and act accordingly I'm not bashing anyone for having an opinion but it gets to a point to where others are just biased and I won't stand for it

Kinda of a shame then for Minus One even though it's getting critical acclaim as well as financial records for a foreign film there's still that barrier of entry that somehow forbids it from doing way better which it deserves all the potential to do much better. This new movie trailer has 24 million views yes but what does that say in comparison to Minus One? Who are all those people who are part of those 24 million views and where were they for Minus One? Have we gotten to a weird point in time where people in the West who are Godzilla fans only care about the Hollywood movies? If Godzilla Minus One is so well received why isn't it being shown more in theaters? Because Minus One is not only a great Godzilla movie but probably and arguably one of if not the best movie of the year. I think it's even up for some Oscars... Why does the fact it's a foreign film handicap it from total success? Why can't it financially be on the same level as the American Godzilla movies. Does Hollywood just purposely handicap and neuter foreign films out of fear? I don't get it. All the people who are psyched for this upcoming Godzilla movie; as Godzilla fans shouldn't they have seen Minus One? If not, what is stopping them? Or is it just that people like sillier premises over serious themed films? Because if I remember correctly, th most successful Godzilla movie of the Showa era was King Kong vs Godzilla, more than the original. Perhaps people all over the world just like the campiness more Minus One is shattering Japanese records but it should be shattering world wide records. It doesn't make sense to me. It cost 15 million to make. These Hollywood movies cost 10 times as much sometimes even more. And so when their returns are in th hundreds of millions, sometimes even that is not enough to even break even. I don't know why a critically successful movie would be handicapped at the theater release. Just release it more theaters then wtf. Is it lack of marketing? What's the issue here. I want a minus one to reach overbloated Hollywood a lesson here.

  • @weldezzharris

    @weldezzharris

@budgiecat9039 You also have to remember that Minus 1 was initially marketed towards the hard core G fans, which is why it first had a limited release when it was released globally and to fewer screenings as well plus it came out during the Christmas season as well which is a busy time for movies and a lot of competition. It wasn't until word of mouth got out about it that more people started taking notice to it, even toho extended its release overseas. The Monsterverse is marketed towards the general audience a way bigger audience, and that's why it gets more attention. In fact, Toho depends on the monsterverse success to help finance their movies and get Godzilla out to a bigger audience it's a win-win for Toho and for the fans around the world cause we get more Godzilla content

If they built up to a destroy all monsters Destroyah ending and actually stick to a story and start writing the humans better the Monsterverse could be way better, it doesn't have to be dark and gritty, but it shouldn't be too goofy and ridiculous, there needs to be balance, something that their universe has talked about a lot.

Personally I am still very much excited for Godzilla X Kong The New Empire, I know it probably won't achieve the levels Minus One did but I am always for pure fun kaiju adventure and it probably will end up being my favorite movie of next year, I think the movie looks to be very fun and enjoyable despite whatever negative or mixed reactions it may have gotten from others. I am just greatful we are literally in a golden age with kaiju content we can enjoy, but of course everyone will have differing opinions when it comes to this stuff. I comlletely understand that something like GXK is probably not gonna be everyone's thing, but im sure there are plenty of fans and people out there who are very much excited for what Legendary and Toho are offering despite however the trailer was recieved with the mixed reactions, they are eagerly awaiting for another a fun ol kaiju fun fest. Im just happy to have different kaiju movies from two studios. BUT everyone has a right to their opinion and how they feel so it is not my place to judge anyone on how they feel about the MV or other Godzilla content and what they wish they could see or want in future kaiju content. With That being said though looking at some of the comments and replies, this comment section is like a damn warzone between fans, the negativity is usually why I don't really interact with many other fans like that outside of my one friend from childhood. I just find it a sad sight to see when so many fans are at each other's throats and tearing each other apart over different kaiju media, opinions, and criticisms but that is something that will never go away no matter the fanbase. But all in all, there isn't much that can be done. Overall while I am very excited to see Godzilla and Kong together on the big screen for another kaiju sized adventure, I also get what your saying D-man and any explanations/concerns you may have for GXK and the MV as a whole especially with how well Minus One has handled aspects like story and characters. There are other fans I have seen with the same concerns and I am truly sorry if there is any toxicity being pointed towards you from others in the comment section who saw this video that you may have to deal with, I know you work hard on these videos and probably don't like seeing fans so at odds with each other or some comment sections becoming a fandom warzone.

At last. It seems with G-1, the penny has finally dropped regarding the Big G's films. Making the film more compelling with the human storyline makes the film more compelling overall. I'll be going to watch GXK, but it looks like it's going to be another leave your brain at home type of film, as the Monsterverse films head in a completely different direction to Minus One. Good post highlighting this!

  • @Alzilla09

Honestly, while I’m not super excited for GxK the new empire I’m still going to see it regardless. Because I still love this franchise. Whether it be Toho or Legendary I still love both. I think it’s unfair to compare Minus One and The New Empire because they are both different films using the Godzilla character. And you’re right about Godzilla being versatile, whether nuclear allegory or defender of earth I still love the Big G regardless. And I want to see where they can take his character next. Because I still think the Big G has so much potential in both franchises. Now I do have my problems with the Monsterverse as a whole. Like consistency and the poorly written characters. However I am enjoying Legacy of Monsters so far. I still believe the New empire will make money regardless and you can guarantee that we will get more sequels. But for now let’s enjoy the content that we are getting.

I'm so glad you made this video, it put into words what I couldn't do with my thoughts of the Monsterverse. I don't *hate* the monsterverse Godzilla, though I've always had problems with it due to the story. Don't get me wrong, I'm more than happy with a 'heroic Godzilla' like the showa era movies, I love Godzilla vs Gigan, and with Godzilla and Anguirus talking to each other, but even in the older movies with cheesy plots and stories for the human characters, they manage to at least hook you to the characters in some way shape or form to keep you attached to the overall plot of the movie outside of the monster fights. Shin Godzilla and Godzilla -1.0 may not have much action or other monsters, but the story, the emotional deliveries and the musical scoring is so fantastic and fitting that I really have a hard time deciding which Godzilla movie is my favorite (those two along with Godzilla vs Destroyah, Final Wars, Godzilla vs Gigan, and GMK.) Monsterverse however, they just never capture the essence of Godzilla. I'll admit I don't like his design, it really alters my interest in the movies, but the 'Hollywood' acting, the cringe one-liners they squeeze in from King of the Monsters onwards, the message of Godzilla is only doing all of this just to keep balance, or be the top Alpha Titan, or whatever the reason, it just does what you said and turns him into a superhero, running like he's part of the avengers. Still, I'd love to be proven wrong and have GxK be a great movie, I've just lost the ability to get my hopes up, lol.

The contrast between the two tones is their greatest strength. Minus One is an absolute triumph, but that doesn’t mean a silly Godzilla movie can’t be enjoyable in its own (and different) way. Every time there’s a new Batman movie people act like the previous version now sucks and the newest version is the best thing ever. Then it happens again. Same thing happens here. The Toho Godzillas will ALWAYS be the definitive versions, but that doesn’t mean other versions can’t exist alongside them.

As well as being about trauma and how Japan treated their soldiers. There's so much going on in that film, and Godzilla is the catalyst for all of it, as he should be. Keep up the good work!

NGL While I love minus one, I think its time to stop doing the 1954 shit again, we have minus one, we have shin. Toho should just let it rest at that and stop remaking the 1954 film over and over and over again. And I'd honestly rather minus one stay a standalone film, no sequels, no prequels, let the masterpiece lie in its current state. We know toho sucks at making sequels (except for the kiryu movies), and every time they make sequels to darker, more serious movies, they end up being derpy monster fight movies anyways. I would honestly love for Toho to actually make a movie based on what Singular point was originally going to be, an army of Samuraii fighting Godzilla. Or hell even a universe with a Shadow of the Colossus theme for the godzilla universe. Or a steampunk or cyberpunkish type universe, since godzilla so far has almost always been featured in a modern era placed somewhere within 100-200 years, and there is so much more the character could be taken in. (Anime trilogy did do this but it was executed horribly, with the directors not agreeing on what to do with the movie in the first place). So I appreciate the Monsterverse trying to do something new with a unique take on the universe. My main gripe is that this IS supposed to be the same universe as 2014, and it feels like a lot of shit just got dropped super fast and sudden without any buildup in between. I think KOTM would have benefitted from being 2 movies, 1 movie that builds everything up, establishes stuff with mothra and godzilla and all the other titans, and ending with ghidorah being freed from the ice. And part 2 being Godzilla actually fighting ghidorah. Sure some people would be pissed it didn't happen in the first movie, but the plot would have time to breath. Hell, in KOTM, a huge emphasis was put on the connection between Godzilla and Mothra, but the two don't even interact at all in the movie. And although KOTM wasn't the best, I think it did set up incredible and near infinite potential to take the monsterverse in, and I think by putting all the titans to sleep rather than have them active and have humanity need to learn to coexist with titans for the sake of having Godzilla and Kong feeling more special only made the universe feel smaller, despite the introduction of the hollow earth. I honestly have no problem with Godzilla or the kaiju being characters (seriously, one of their contracts literally says legendary can't allow godzilla to display emotion, eat, or do much of anything outside of fight things), and I feel like Toho's idea that godzilla shouldn't be a character but instead be some force of nature and thats that is stupid, considering the original 1954 film very much so had godzilla be a character.

These are 2 completely different movies minus one is a sad emotional movie about post war japan and a giant lizard is destroying stuff in the background gxk is more like the heisei/showa/millenium movies where it’s fun not trying to be this big emotional movie it’s just monster action people need to stop comparing these 2 completely different movies which one hasn’t even came out yet and it won’t until I think it was like mid 2024 and for people who hate the mv just stop watching videos on it and stuff about it like I hate Disney so I stay away from most of their stuff And about the video gxk is gonna be released next year so -1 will have 0 effect on that movie and just because the new mv movie isn’t gonna be a sad, emotional movie and (probably not) a masterpiece of a film like -1 doesn’t mean people aren’t gonna go watch it like I liked -1 more than anything in the mv but that doesn’t make me hate the mv and never make me wanna see another one of their movies Edit:Also the trailer wasn’t fully finished it was just trying to release it around -1 to get some more hype so the movie will (I’m 99% sure)have better cgi and they might change a few scenes from the trailer and this will definitely make a lot of people mad but shin and -1 might of not even released and if they did they definitely wouldn’t doing as good if it wasn’t the MV that’s just the truth

Hollywood's obsession with spectacle hurts the overall quality of their films. Substance should always come before spectacle. That's how you get films that matter, films that people remember for years, even decades. This also applies to kaiju films. Let budget be decided by substance and you'll see better films with lower budgets.

Then we got Rise of the beast and that movie didn't even do well, it even had a consistent story. It was just boring. Despite what people say of the bayverse films they were fun to watch and had people hyped. I see the same thing with MV and Minus 1. Yes Minus 1 had good characters and story but eventually it'll become stale and people will get bored. Because let's be honest we just want Godzilla. Even if the characters are great you didn't come there solely to watch them. I feel like people will get invested in Minus one then immediately regret it and say they miss the MV days.

I wouldn't be as skeptical about the current Monsterverse, if I believed it arrived where it is on purpose. There's a big difference between intentionally framing your movies as callbacks to the lovable antics of the Showa-era and leaning hard into science-fantasy because you can't find the equilibrium that lends your monster-action, character development, and worldbuilding sci-fi cred. It's exhausting to get excited about a thing's initial concept--to invest years, seasons, and seasonal breaks, only to seethat thing morph into something entirely different than what it is you were sold on. And it's even more tiring of to cope with it just because you have genuine love for whatever the original thing was that's stringing you along in it's present form. Minus One is a "pace-car" for what the Monsterverse wanted to be in G2014 and should be going forward. I don't want another "Transformers franchise." So yeah, fight me.

Saying that camp isn't a legitimate part to Godzilla's history, to me, is the equivalent to saying that Adam West isn't a legitimate part of Batman's history. Not to gatekeep or anything, but the "real" Godzilla fans know that the MonsterVerse is basically adapting the Showa Era of Godzilla movies (which is the era that most Godzilla fans grew up watching!). Sure, my favorite Godzilla stories are the ones that are darker and more grounded, don't get me wrong, but watching Godzilla beat up the "bad guy" monsters just brings out my inner child and it makes me smile!
