DID FELIP'S "BULAN" COPY LAY'S "LIT" | HONEST REACTION AND OPINION ABOUT PLAGIARISM 🤔

Ойын-сауық

Ever since FELIP released "BULAN" his new song anf music video the internet has been going crazy with allegations that her plagiarized LAY's song "LIT". Just a few days ago I made a FELIP Bulan Reaction where I have you my opinions and comments about Bulan's sound and music video. But today we are going to talk about Plagiarism and what it implies.
Felip, also known as Ken, is a member of the famous filipino boy group SB19, while LAY is a member of popular south korean-chinease band EXO.
I know this is a sensitive topic for both fandoms so let's have an open conversation respectfully about the Plagiarism allegations between FELIP's
BULAN and LAY's LIT.
I hope you enjoy this reaction- commentary video. Let me know what are your thoughts about this issue in the comments down below.

As a Filipino who personally did research and spoke on plagiarism in international conferences and various academic circles, I'd like to extend my gratitude for this video. The fact that the accusers didn't even wait for "The Making of Bulan" to be certain of their accusations meant that they're simply trying to pre-empt and influence audience perception, knowing fairly well how DAMAGING they can be to the artists's reputation and credibility. Simply put, PLAGIARISM MEANS DISHONESTY. It means STEALING IDEAS FROM ANOTHER AND OWNING THEM WITHOUT SHAME. The mere suggestion that Felip/ Ken's MV plagiarized another artistic creation sends ripples of doubt everywhere- enough to crush the faith of fans who may not know enough about it and rely on the immature conception of plagiarism as something you can immediately confirm by showing the similarities and influences between two creations. But in identifying plagiarism, you need to settle a few things: 1. Is the subject the same? Do the message of the creators/ artists say the same thing in different words and are brought together using exactly the same means? For example, if the artist used cuts and clips from another artist's work- then superimposed his own material to "cover" or "hide" the original source material, then that's clearly plagiarism- no doubt about it. But is Bulan even about the same subject? Are the themes the same? The subject is loaded with cultural concepts and symbolism that are unique to the artist's milieu and cultural origins yet versatile enough to transcend them. The two artists being compared in this are NOT even speaking of the same culture. Symbols of course traverse different cultural and linguistic boundaries- and the moon isn't a new symbol even in Eastern mythology. Western cultures have it since the time of the ancient Greeks. 2. Are the techniques, instruments, and materials that went into the composition of the creation/production OWNED EXCLUSIVELY or INVENTED by the artist purportedly copied? Was the arrangement of these materials and elements in the said source material so SPECIFIC or UNIQUE to that material that it CANNOT BE FOUND ELSEWHERE? This is where the accusation against Bulan falls flat in its face. Music elements are NOT OWNED by any specific artist- nor is the arrangement so peculiar to the said artist being copied that it can't be found elsewhere but in his work. Unless there is evidence that the work of the artist being copied was used WITHOUT VARIATION AT ALL- WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST MODIFICATION AS TO SUGGEST THAT IT IS COMPLETELY ANOTHER ARTIST'S BEAT AND MUSIC SUPERIMPOSED in Bulan and grafted into its structure mechanically (that you can see it without need of over-analysis or interpretation) then you have a case. Otherwise, if you have to go by INTERPRETATION to see that there is a possible similarity- then you're probably stretching that biased perception a little too far. 3. Plagiarism can be committed even in translation and by paraphrasing (using different words to say the same thing). However, not only should the subject of the two texts or discourses be the same- but it must be shown that the source material (that was being copied) is being used to communicate exactly the same message- WITH THE SAME INTENTIONS AS THAT OF ANOTHER AUTHOR/ CREATOR. Intention is invisible- but there are outward manifestations that allow us to judge that (in criminal law, we all know this- you know the presence of killing intent by the location of the wounds, the weapon used, and the gravity of the attack on the victim's body). In judging whether intent is the same, you have to see if the creators in question are USING THEIR PRODUCTION IN EXACTLY THE SAME WAY- TO COMMUNICATE OR AROUSE FEELINGS IN EXACTLY THE SAME AUDIENCE. This is the reason this accusation against Bulan can be said to be deliberately malicious. The music clearly speaks to a SPECIFIC AUDIENCE- using symbols and materials and beats that have a collective, universal texture and appeal in order to reach audiences BEYOND the intended one. BULAN'S CULTURAL LANDSCAPE- THE MEDIUM IT SELECTS AS A CONVEYOR OF ITS MEANING AND MESSAGE IS UNIQUE TO THE AUDIENCE IT WANTS TO REACH. Even without considering the disclaimer in the opening of the MV, the elements used and the REACTIONS OF THE VARIOUS FOREIGN REACTORS and AUDIENCES to the MV sufficiently EVIDENCE THAT THERE IS A UNIQUENESS TO BULAN THAT COULD NOT HAVE COME DIRECTLY FROM ANY PRECEDENT. In conclusion: We need to be more discerning as audiences- true- but discernment should be informed and guided by expertise that is available. Plagiarism is NOT a new concept yet it's been thrown around like a joke that one can withdraw or correct without serious repercussions. There are TECHNICAL PARAMETERS to establishing it- and some areas remain gray and debatable, that doesn't mean that accusations can be so SUBJECTIVE as to be BLATANTLY CARELESS and IGNORANT. THESE ACCUSERS SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DAMAGE AND MISINFORMATION THEY CAUSE. However, for the sake of settling things in an amiable manner, artists choose not to deal with the accusers legally. This may be the better option in the long run- but detractors should be given a fair warning. YOUR ACCUSATIONS CAN DAMAGE CREDIBILITY, HONOR, and INTEGRITY and you almost always get away with no consequences on your part. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK- and use proper media channels. There is also such a thing as abuse of rights and freedoms. Any proof of actual damage can be used against you. Sorry for this long comment- but again, thanks to your discussion and more power to your channel.

Many profssionals are now backing Felip, like Luis, Kirby Araullo, Lawyers, A person whondid research and Spoke Plagiarism in the International Conferences and hoping many more will come out. This only shows that They want to protect not only Felip but our country, our Country's Heritage, our Culture, the PPop Music that is now making a LOUD NOISE internationally. Those accusations maybe are deliberately malicious. Maybe with the intention of sabotaging PPOP in general so it will not continue to rise. people shld realise that no person or individual has a sole ownership of ideas that has dragons on their videos and red color of background or the formation of dancers. If those critics or bashers have only done a research first of the Phil history they would know that Chinese people are the early traders in the country and many have settled down here so our culture were somehow influenced by them as well as those of other countries that has. colonised us. Felip also loves anime and I see also an influence of it in the video, so Luis is right on his reaction on the topic of plagiarism even on first. sight of the two videos they are completely different with only the dragon the red color the circle and not to forget that Ken is not using a mask but half cover of his face which is actually a kind of head band while lay was using a real mask.

Ken's Explanation: "While there may seem to be some similarities between the sound of 'Lit' and 'Bulan,' a closer examination of the chord progressions, instrumentation, samples used, and even syllabication will prove the claim otherwise," FELIP said in his statement. He added, "Moreover, the melody and the ethnic chants in 'Bulan' were based on indigenous Filipino ritual music, made modern with the addition of rock and hip-hop elements." Regarding the other visuals in the music video, he cites the Filipino game "Bulan-bulan," the Filipino mythological creature "Bakunawa," and the Filipino mythological goddess Haliya, among others. He says, "Apart from the lyrics, the music video for 'Bulan' was made to be a metaphor for real-world issues, while staying true to common knowledge of what transpired among the characters in most versions of the ancient lores." FELIP continued, "'Bulan' was heavily and responsibly researched that details in the MV had its cultural basis, executed with some variations so as to not offend any cultures/indigenous populations."

The artist shows confidence in his craft. Felip has the proof to back up his statements. This is what I can see from these statements. I almost wish he would sue whoever started these plagiarism rumors, to serve as an example to all the others that are abusing the freedom and anonymity of the internet. Internet anonymity is just an illusion, if the artist has determined to find out who, it can easily be done. It's a pity that Felip is a frank person but not a vindictive one. He probably would leave all things in God's hands because he grew up as a God-fearing Christian.

You were very spot on with the shot types. That's what I noticed as well that people kept on pointing out that was "plagiarized" when in fact, they're actually just common shot techniques. The photo and video that was being circulated and used as "proof" of Felip copying Lit's MV were deliberately chosen scenes and were edited together to make it look like it was copied when in reality, they were just using the same shot type. To add to that, they're not done in the same sequence. Ideas can't be copyrighted. It's how it was expressed that could be. Unless you put the video side by side and they have the same shot in every sequence (without splicing other scenes), then that's when the lawyers should step in (edit: even then, you'll still have to prove it in court down to the nitty gritty).

There are a lot of Filipinos who are unaware of our own culture and myths because of the lack of exposure to our pre-colonial literature. We are taught mostly about the literature during the colonial era and how we fought for our freedom (for example; El Filibusterismo by Dr. Jose Rizal) I think some people are not aware of the Legend of Bakunawa. Hence, they "think" that Felip copied the concept from Lay. However, in Felip's defense, he had already had that style even before the music video of Lay came out, he had always composed music with his team in that genre. His vocals and the instruments are inspired by the style of music played for krumping, the circle, in the beginning, is similar to the games we played as a child in the Philippines, where someone draws the moon (the circle ) on the ground and others must not leave the circle and someone from the outside must touch the players in the circle. Those who are within the circle who are not careful might be eventually "tagged" or tapped by the player outside the circle, hence symbolizing the Dragon "Bakunawa" who had eaten the moons. Thank you for explaining the situation Luis, we appreciate your input and non bias perspective on the matter. THANK YOU 💗

Just a bit of addition. The Bakunawa is not a dragon but a sea serpent. That is where everyone is getting confused. While the chinese dragon has feet and is a symbol of prosperity and good luck; the Bakunawa slithers on the ground, sea, & wind it's representation is also quite the opposite: the harbinger of doom and tragedy. So they might look alike in some ways both mythical creatures are very different in their lore and genus. And the bakunawa in all respects has always been represented as a giant serpent-like monster. The problem here is that oriental culture is more prominent and widespread whereas the hidden lores of indigenous Filipino narratives are very obscure that it would be so easy to accuse the latter to be copying an earlier form. When actually, both have been existent for time immemorial just that one story is more known than the other.

With respect to the MV, there is very little completely original to both apart from the stories they are based on. Felip’s already said our legends are practically gone and he’s pieced together several versions to get his storyline. His colors are inspired by the indigenous tribes in his province as those are the colors they are known for. Please do watch Kirby Araullo’s analysis on the mythology behind Bulan. Also it was not a mystical dragon Ken used in the mv, it was a SEA SERPENT. A lizard's head, snake, turtle, crocs, even gators can even look similar.

thankyou so much for this, i really appreciate the effort you exerted although you are a foreigner, thankyou bcs you went this far, just to show and explain to FILIPINO's about what the MV is all about, and accusing a FILIPINO artist about something that he worked hard for. thankyou Luis.

Asians should help each other, push each other up not pull each other down...Thanks again...God bless!

most of the people who are accusing ken of plagiarism are the ones who really doesn't know the term technically and legally, orelse they won't spit it out that easily . so this is really very helpful for them so they won't do it again to others artists.

How heartwarming is this and at the same time it makes me sad Why some foreigners defending Felip/Ken? While our some fellow Filipinos are dragging him down and saying he's a copycat ? 🥺

Thank you. Hoping this video of yours reached the people who are accusing Felip without analyzing studying and researching every bits of pieces inside the MV and in the song itself...Hoping instead of bringing down artist who workd hard for his craft they will learn to be more compassionate, appreciative and respectful. But if they feel its not their cup of tea then leave. Just focus on supporting your artist wirhout disrepecting & damaging other artist. Specially FILIPINO fan trying to pull down filipino artist without realizing that it will not only damage the artist but our own country, the Philippines which he represent, & WE/US as a "FILIPINO". I m not sure if it will be ok to sue people who accuse and damage the artist so as to be an example in the future in case these things happens again at least they will THINK FIRST BEFORE THEY CLICK.

this issue downplayed the conversation of history that both artist wants to promote. Fans destroyed both themselves and the song by amplifying ideas that should not be a concern. They are concerned about their artist's feeling right now as if they know them well and not even knowing artist's reaction. The fact that we should converse the similarity of Asian culture and the thought of how these ideas was spread out across Asia.
