*****
It's interesting to note how little things have changed since the release of this album in 1970. In the nine years since Dick Gregory first appeared on vinyl, he'd built up quite a reputation for his strident political beliefs, evolving from a standup comedian into a social commentator, and Frankenstein resembles a comedy album only so far as Gregory manages to get laughs in between pointed jabs at society and the government. Yes, it can seem a bit preachy, and yes, the delivery is very groovy (you can only hear him say "dig it now" so many times before it starts to grate), but the message is what's important: No matter how many important strides are made, race continues to be a factor in the way people treat each other, in the way laws are made, and in the way society as a whole functions. Maybe the names of the protagonists and antagonists have changed, but the message of this album still carries a lot of weight, even into the new millennium. -all music guide

If my memory serves me well, this was actually the first record album I ever bought. We had just moved back into the city from the country and I had new access to urban stores. I bought it at a “Black” store that sold incense and posters and books and of course this album. I played it until it couldn’t be played anymore. After I was aware of him I was able to see him at William and Mary College in Annapolis Maryland. I was all of 12 years old but I had a bike. I could get to wherever I wanted to go. So, this album not only introduced me to consciousness but also gave me some good racial humor and jokes. Strangely, none of the other black kids in the neighborhood seemed to even be aware of this man at that time. One thing I always remembered was that he emphasized: No more tricks. That’s about it. Thanks for posting.

This is the first time I ever heard this speech. And I know this much, the issues Dick Gregory was talking about in 1970 are still so relevant today in 2023. The criminally this country committed back then is still being committed today at this very hour. America has got to make a very wrenching decision do you really seriously want to change for the better or go down the drain as the Roman Empire did.

Mr. Gregory must have been disappointed seeing where we are headed, particularly the younger generation's dependence on formal education which neglects critical-reasoning and self-taught wisdom.

@@LeshaAnn in any population the resource distribution is greater amongst smaller populations. If there are twenty bananas (resource) and eight monkeys (population) each monkey could receive an equal share of two and a half bananas, however, if there were only four monkeys each could receive an equal share of five bananas. One could say that fewer competitors for resources allows one to amass more resources for themselves.
