I don't fully understand all the hard science behind Egan's work, but when it makes sense, it's often pretty mind-blowing.

In know, even if I'm left still a little in the dark, it doesn't at all take away from how much I enjoy it

Nice review. The first chapter is a good contender for the best sci-fi chapter ever written IMO. It’s literally about building a mind and it gaining self awareness. Heavy stuff but worth persevering

The premise of this book is fascinating, but actually trying to read it feels like bashing my head against a brick wall

Thank you, for this. I dont have the most advanced technical education but I freaking loved this book. I adored and was exhilarated with it even when I was utterly freaking stymied by the science. And I haven't experienced a lot of technical sci-fi where I can enjoy the story when it's riddled with mindbending science! Yatima was just written so extraordinarily well I wanted to be zer.

I haven’t read this book in 20 years… diaspora I mean. I read it through quite a rough time, trying to leave an addiction behind (horrific), & while East Timor fought Indonesia for their freedom with Australia actually doing something to help the underdog for once, & with me reading this while watching ABC Australia 24 hour news totally focussed on East Timor. So everything was full on. Everything. All while I tried to focus on this! I have kinda been too scared to reread this as a product of that time, always wondering if I was being silly or not. The chase at the end, through time, space, dimensions etc cleaved my mind into a lot of pieces back then. Leaving an intense, ongoing imprint on my brain/psyche/whatever. So, I don’t think I’m being silly, but I am pretty damn certain I should reread after listening to yr perspective Thanks for showing your vulnerability. It helped me.

Thank you for your vulnerability! That sounds like such an intense combination of life events and world history to adventure into some Egan works!

Diaspora is about in the same level as schilds ladder in terms of the science… but it is incredible. I pretty much grasp about one tenth of Egan in terms of the science but what I do understand makes me think for months…

I read this one decades ago, and I think I need to add a copy back into my collection sometime. Great book, mind-bending sci-fi, just the way I like it!

I don't know how to thank you. I keep getting the same scifi authors recommended. I hope to read it this month and look forward to your other reviews.

Nice one - been hoping you'll review some Alastair Reynolds as well one of these days. Or if you like a little bit of space opera blended with hard scifi, Jason Russell's 224-Verse.

What? I had no problem with the Rememberance trilogy (Death's end might be my favorite novel) but I doubt I could handle Egan

This guy looks like Elijah Wood if Elijah Wood had encountered testosterone.
