Film is interesting in places with some of the history and views of cities the way they used to look, but Perlov's narration is beyond boring. His deep, monotone voice can put anyone to sleep. The images veer into the ponderous at times too. He just films anything that moves and even some things that don't. Or he will film the television which can be interesting but seems lazy. Then he will try to extrapolate meaning from the images even if there is no meaning. "Why is this bird sitting here on the window sill?" Um, that's what birds do and have done for centuries. Then he seems to enjoy filming his daughters getting dressed. At one point we see Naomi completely topless which is disturbing on a couple levels. Why would she undress in front of her father and why is he filming her doing it? They may be a very close family but they are totally lacking in any warmth, humanity, or familiarity. When they talk to each other, it's as though they are lecturing or trying to teach each other. It's extremely formal and they don't seem to have any real connection other than their shared love of classical music, poetry, art, dance, etc. But even that seems false as though they are trying to convince us how cultured they are. Even their little dramas don't seem real. The one daughter's boyfriend cheats on her but she anxiously awaits his call and takes him back and the other one's boyfriend openly flirts with a beautiful French girl right in front of her and she freaks out but then laps up any little attention he gives her. This seems to suggest a lack of self esteem in the girls but none of that is explored further because Perlov is more interested in filming children walking down the street or people getting on trains. I understand he is trying to be outside of the film in terms of documenting events, but considering it's supposed to be his diary of HIS life, wouldn't it make more sense for him to be in some way connected to the events filmed? When he has interesting people show up, we get such minimal access to them they may as well have not been there. Then out of nowhere, the final part winds up being Perlov's socialist manifesto where he keeps drawing attention to the plight of "poor working people" but the images don't fit what he's saying. He makes a big deal that the maid is cleaning other people's things and the cabdriver drives a car he will never own. None of them feel oppressed so why is he trying to make them appear so? Part 6 felt like Perlov knew he was ending the film and needed to get all his political ideas on tape before it was over. Pretentious and preachy. Best Israeli film of all time? Not by a long shot. Documentaries should have some kind of focus and this one doesn't.
