Point Pleasant Beach, NJ had one in service until at least the 90s. It had an even deeper tone. It sounded like the world was coming to an end. Day-trippers would come up to me on the lifeguard stand asking "my God! What's happening!!??" "Point Beach has a fire call." "Holy hell, what's burning?"

That horn sounds almost cartoonish, but cruise ships do similarly with their horns and internal alarms for emergencies and muster station life boat drills. The muster station code was 7 short honks followed by 1 long honk of the horn.

Wow, G below C below C below middle C. There are two horns up there - (last I looked), but it sounds like only one is sounding. That is a brass piston, no doubt; the pitch is so low.

That can't be a Gamewell Diaphone, That sounds like an F2T or type F classic fog diaphone! Perhaps they actually bought a retired foghorn..

Dan S yes, it does sound like an F2T. The one we had in the harbor in Duluth Mn was designed to be heard up to 20 miles away over water.

This is the former foghorn in Duluth Mn. They sound very similar, so my guess is that it is a Type F2T. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKKhu9ikd7mvaag.html

infinitecanadian They are loud because we use it to notify our members especially when they are 2 miles away. But some members live way out in the town and they either hear the pager or get the text. That explains why they're so loud

are they by any chance louder than locomotive horns which register around 150 decibels at 5ft? and are audible from 5 miles on a calm day without wind?
