She's often the voice of reason which can be boring. She's definitely self-righteous even though she's just as flawed as her ex-husband and nearly as flawed as Bojack. Things don't really blow-up in her face like with Bojack, so she lacks comeuppance for her crappy deeds. Princess Caroline is a very hard worker, while Diane kinda just lucks into cool or at least sought-after jobs. I like her character, but I don't think anyone on the show is all that likeable... the same kinda applies to Always Sunny.

PC is one of my favorites. At point point PC digs into Diane for making Sextina's abortion display all about her, and just airs out her dirty laundry regarding her infertility and projects all over Diane. After Diane gets the abortion and Diane opens up how the world expects her to be ready for kids at her age, PC lets her know she doesn't have to explain anything to anyone. PC set aside her desires, insecurity and jealousy to impart wisdom and understanding. PC often flakes on solidarity among women, but this was one of the few times she was actually there for someone. PC probably would have loved to adopt Diane's baby if she had it, but doesn't flinch when she lets Diane know 'It's not about them. It's about you. This is YOUR story.' It's almost like it came straight from the Movie Star Speech. Fuck, now that just made me sad.

a really good video by Ariana Alexis mentioned that diane makes people uncomfortable because she’s the only character who does something about her mental health and i agree. she challenges the idea that we can be comfortable with the broken parts of ourselves. she encourages the audience to understand you don’t need to hate yourself into changing, but you can only be a better person when you are constantly seeking out the bad in yourself and dissolving it. you have to be intimately familiar with your own soul to do that, and that’s an uncomfortable narrative for a lot of people to swallow.

There is a "deep down", but having a "deep down" doesn't make up being shitty behavior, and having a good "deep down" doesn't make you a good person if you keep doing bad things. But the fact still remains that Bojack's "deep down" is what keeps Diane coming back to Bojack, and why we as viewers keep the belief Bojack will eventually become the person he wants to be. You know, you are right in that you are like Diane. Trying to make their failings sound like the result of just being too selfless. But Diane isn't selfless, in fact, she's probably the most selfish character on the Show. It is rather fascinating to go through these comments and look upon those that identify with Diane trying to diffuse criticism. But it won't work, you can't go oh, well what about Bojack or Mr. PB. It doesn't matter if they have similar flaws, THEY are entertaining, Diane is not. I'm not trying to be friends with any of these characters, their personalities therefore come secondary to their ability to entertasin me. The show however is bult around deeply flawed characters. Therefore, Mr.PB and Bojakc, Todd and PC, they all have their issues, but they are also entertaining. With Diane, all that reamains is the flawed personality...which in and of itself wouldn't be a problem, but the specific personality given to Diane IS. See, because not only is Diane not fun, she's also a kind of person that many of us have become far more aware of then we wish, Diane is they kind of person that wants the world to be miserable with her. It's not enough for Diane to be sad about things, so she has to try and make a big deal out of any given thing. Diane also knows that she won't accomplish her supposed goal, that's fine though, the real goal isn't about achieving that, it's about forcing people to listen to you. And that is what makes Diane infinitely worse then Bojack and Co could ever be. They may be shitty, but they aren't "I want the entire World to be miserable with me because that's how bad I am at coping with the chaotic nature of the world.

  • @Libra0Rising

    @Libra0Rising

    4 жыл бұрын

@@Monoochrom I don't think it's fair to say that Diane is worse than Bojack because she 'wants the world to be miserable with her'. Diane is not some vaudeville villain directly plotting to make people miserable. Neither is Bojack. But they both end up making people miserable because of how they cope (or fail to cope) with the world. Bojack makes people miserable by having little regard for anyone and spreading a negative worldview onto people who interact with him because that's what he's been taught. He doesn't know what it's like to take care of someone and he's never learned so he buys into the toxicity he grew up with. And it hurts to face that, so he doesn't and continues to spread that toxicity. Diane doesn't just want people to listen to her talk. Unlike Bojack, she does face her trauma but she is stuck in it and stuck in making it right. She sees injustice and negativity everywhere she looks, only now, she feels like she has the power to fix it. So she makes people miserable by pointing out everything that needs "fixing" in hopes that she can help repair the world (and herself). Rather than focusing on what she can control, what she can't and accepting her life as it was. Bojack and Diane BOTH make other people miserable because they are BOTH bad at coping with the chaotic nature of the world but neither of them have the intention of making other people miserable. Whether it's denial leading to negativity or rumination leading to negativity, both are negative. They're just people with issues in 2 different phases of struggle. It doesn't make one worse than the other because one isn't as "fun" or because one triggers you more than the other does. Some people found Bojack more triggering because people in that state of denial have done more damage to them personally. It's also true that people in denial can react especially badly to people who only want to talk about the shitty stuff and vice versa. So I can see why the two sides fight a lot.

Bojack's trying to reverse 20 years of terrible decisions and destructive habits while Diane is crashing and burning in real time, and I feel just seeing how those smaller but still significant problems build up resonates with a lot of the viewers. I pity Bojack, only Bojack gets me to think as deep as I have, but I've also seen the same sad Bojack for five seasons, whereas Diane started with at least the illusion of having some kind of control over her life. Don't even get me started on how much i relate to her so much it hurts. She thought she could change the world for the better but she couldn't. She struggles to find authenticity in herself and others which is highlighted within her relationship with Mr. PB which is superficial and constantly foreshadowed to fail. She actively tries to better herself without giving her or others easy excuses. There's a reason why she's a focal point of the show. She's one of the most human and depressing characters. I adore Diane SO MUCH. She's broken, she can be self serving, she can be pretentious, etc but these attributes don't stop her from trying to be a good person. She is aware of her faults and owns up to them. Diane and Bojack are Anima and Animus to me - but them being together would be too tumultuous. In a way, their relationship reminds me of Don and Peggy from Mad Men; some viewers want them to be together but those viewers haven't dived deep enough to see how terrible the relationship would be. All of the above mentioned characters are too similar; but with Diane and Peggy, they are the evolved, more self actualized version of their male counterparts

As much as I love her and her approach to life, her spirals were self destructive mentally (compared to Bojack, who was self destructive physically). She showed me the most important lesson: depression sucks. For real. I have the feeling she never felt enough and that that was the reason she could never be happy. She could have saved herself so much suffering.

"I wasn't the person I'd thought I was." That line hit me so hard... People form these biased impressions of themselves, often assuming the best. They align themselves with their principles, when it's all too easy to contradict them. Diane's problem, is that she's such an idealist, and expects everyone - including herself - to live up to an impossible standard.

People often use Diane's ability to relate to the audience as a defense of her character, but many fans hate her BECAUSE she resonates with one of the greatest fears of humanity. We want to desperately believe that as long as we have good intentions and rationalizations that we can be moral, justified people without thinking about the consequences of our actions; in reality, all this does is leave us in ignorance, unaware that we are walking down a dangerous path. At the end of the latest season, both Bojack and Diane end on a broken, depressing note, but the key difference is that Bojack is receiving help while Diane drives away, with nothing the listen to but the car radio and her own thoughts. This is a chilling display to watch, and is something I am sure many people can relate to, even if they would hate to admit it.

I feel like a lot of the hate for Diana just stems from her relationship with Mr. Peanutbutter and Bojack. Those two guys are the most prolific and fleshed-out characters on the show to the point where their obviously toxic and destructive traits genuinely eclipse their more positive attributes (which is part of the meta-humor), and it's almost always Diane to bear the brunt of those toxic behaviors first and/or point them out as the flaws that they are. No one likes a critic or a cynic. People like Bojack because he's a self-aware trainwreck that's fun to watch or relate to and people like Mr. Peanutbutter because a part of him is a genuinely nice and caring person and kind of makes him into the friend everyone would want. Diane really doesn't do any of that; instead I think she's meant to appeal to those of us who've had to actively deal with toxic people in our lives as well as try to solve our own destructive behaviors, none of which are fun or even nice sometimes despite the obvious rewards and benefits long-term. A lot of us may not like Diane but everyone needs one to stay on the straight and narrow.

Yeah, that's why I said that Diane also appeals to people who have to deal with their own destructive behaviors. She's *aware* that she's fucked up and you see in the show that she tries to learn from that and be a better person. Part of knowing right from wrong is learning that lesson first-hand. Diane isn't meant to be a morally flawless paragon; that kind of defeats the point of being the character that sees ambiguity and contradiction in everything. She's instead supposed to show an alternative to Bojack where she still works to be a better person despite all the forces that go against that.

This character that is trying to be a better person is still awful to those around her. She literally works for someone that killed her entire IT department in front of her. Diane is a toxic person herself every bit as much as Bojack and PB. You want to know who has to deal with their own self destructive behaviors and slowly works on being a better person...Princess godammn Carolyn. @@lProN00bl again, *that's kind of the point*. Everyone on Bojack Horseman is toxic, dysfunctional, and hypocritical to some degree or another because everyone in real life is the same way in some degree or another. There's no heroes or real villains in the show but just people trying to navigate the world as best they can, and Diane is really the only character that's aware of that. She still pushes Bojack to get therapy for his problems and she tries to give PB genuinely helpful love advice despite the fact they just went through a divorce. Mind you that Bojack almost killed someone in season 5 and PB is falling into the same trap with Pickles, who Diane also helped out when she was going through a drunken crisis. Say what you want about Diane, but she's one of the few active forces of actually giving a shit on the entire show. Becoming a better person isn't a single-done thing but a constant process you have to work on and it's something you will fuck up with down the road, which is again, a major theme of the series that's touched on time and time again. Also, your examples are kind of bad. The whole gassing the IT department was a gag (one that Diana was visibly not okay with) and Diane has worked with Princess Carolyn both on and off the clock numerous times.

@@ginkiba3 Yes but none of them are constantly playing judge on the others to the degree Diane does for everyone. When you are constantly trying to have the moral high ground and judge others. Yes Bojack is harsh on society but that's clearly shown as just an illusion to cope with his own behavior. She's not "aware" of that...those are just her beliefs. It's not some greater truth she understands it's just how she views the world...which is fine but can easily be argued against. Her push to get Bojack to therapy is to make him re-enact the scene with Penny. That's not trying to help him that's the same thing she did in season 1, acting out of anger (releasing part of the book without his consent), then pretending it was for his benefit when it traumatized him more. Her "advice" to PB doesn't even make sense. Because none of his marriages failed because the women "grew up" Katrina becomes a terrible person because of one party...Biel clearly never changed...and Diane is still acting like she's 20. The problem with an ex giving you advice about your failed relationships is it's going to be biased. Especially when nearly all the things she complains about him...she does. She doesn't listen, she does things without caring about what others want. It could have worked if they both recognized their flaws but that doesn't happen instead it's another Diane lecture. The only real progress she makes is towards the end of season 5 where she briefly says she isn't in a position to be judging or telling others what they've done wrong or what they should do...but that's broken because that's exactly what she does the next scene. That it's comedy does not make it less fucked up. She was visibly thrown off by it, but she did not report it and still works for her. What does Diane having worked "off the clock" have to do with anything? How do you know she's not salary? Also doesn't make up for that PC has done way more for her than she's ever done for anyone else, let alone PC. My whole point is she's actually a worse person in season 5 than in season 1. Because in season one while she is a little cynical and willing to point out flaws in what people say, she's not crusading and snooping into their lives because she feels entitled to know everything about them.

She was criticized a lot as a child by her family (can relate to it, as asian woman you have higher expectations than your male relatives), so I guess she searched validation and love outside of her family, probably through school, that's why she is so well educated, have a discipline and can think critically. But she can't let herself just enjoy small things, and just be an ordinary person. She demands herself to make change in the world, that's why she takes up that job with Sebastian Cinclair, a job that seemed perfect in paper, but turned out not exactly sm th that would make her happy. During the first episodes to me she just seemed out of place, and it was unclear about her significance in the series. Later on her presence started to grow in both frequency and importance, and there is more space to explore her as a person. A lot of the times when she behaves in a morally questionable manner, I can still see them as her struggling in a very life-like way and similar to any other character in Bojack Horseman, you ultimately find and embrace Diane as a person after going through her possibly troublesome patterns

I’ll say it if no one else does: A big reason certain BH fans hate Dianne is because of deep-rooted misogyny. They’re either Bojack bros who are mad at her for choosing Mr. Peanutbutter over him, or mad at her for divorcing and fighting w/ Mr. Peanutbutter. Nevermind the fact that Bojack isn’t really in love with Dianne and Mr. Peanutbutter has trouble paying attention to his partner’s emotional needs. They’re so used to jerkass male protagonists automatically being treated as heroes and given a pass for their behavior (one of the very tropes this show deconstructs!), that they don’t like to see Dianne call Bojack and Mr. Peanutbutter out on their behavior, even if she actually shows a lot of friendship and empathy for them.

It's only once you get to see her personal life that it's really clear how even the most together-seeming people can be lost and uncertain, and keep searching for what will make them happy. That makes her more relatable than anyone else, really.

Fans hate her because, although she does try to be a good person, she often uses that as an excuse to justify overlooking her own faults. She and Bojack both have self-destructive behaviors, but Diane takes solace in the fact that she can at least recognize them. It is this sense of comfort that prevents her from ever feeling the need to change her own life for the better, and is actually more tragic than Bojack's story arc if you ask me.

How can she overlook and simultaneously recognize her faults? I think the show very clearly shows how unhappy Diane is with some of her choices, yet she is the one actively trying to improve by going to therapy, something BoJack refused to do for a long time. This doesn't make her perfect, as she has certain pretentious or maybe even narcissistic traits. In general, I don't understand how you can hate any of the main characters as they are all interesting and well development and written and also relatable to some degree.

Yet-I myself find myself in the same relentless cycles. I've had friends like Bojack, and as much as I want to be the compassionate figure of forgiveness in there lives. Fifty percent of the the time I'm sick of there garbage and refuse to be there human shield against consequences and responsibility of there own shitty behavior. I want to do right in a world that's already on the fast-track to "We're Fucked-Ville". Yet things change too fast and only complicate matters worse and the best I can do is calm my anxiety. If I'm being completely honest, I really disliked Diane when I started watching the show. I couldn't exactly say why, but there was something about her that I just really resented. And it wasn't until halfway through season 1 that I realized I didn't like her because I saw a lot of myself in her: I really want to be smart, but worry that I'm not; I try my hardest to be selfless but in that pursuit can sometimes be selfish; I want to see the good in people but am floored by the injustice of the world and our capitalistic society. So when her ugly and very human side came to light on the show, I rejected her because I didn't want to see that -- I felt like a light was being shined on me, too. I think that's why a lot of people don't like her -- they're afraid she's too much like them and they don't like it when their flaws are on full display. When I realized why I didn't like her, I did my best to get over it. I tried to see her as a whole, (not just focusing on her bad qualities, afraid they were reflective of me and mine) and managed to accept who she is. Now I can't even imagine the series without her - she is relatable, she is empathic and, like this video shows, she is the soul not only of the show, but of BoJack Horseman.

Diane really irritates me but it was nice to see a different respective. I don't personally relate to her because I find her lack of consistency frustrating. As a character, she's really well done, and I can see how some one in a similar place would relate. But while Diane might be constantly evolving, she has no direction. She's the mirror of Bojack: Bojack finds himself repeating cycles of addiction which lower his inhibitions until he does something so terrible that he sobers up (then repeats the cycle). Diane repeats cycles of trying to be a champion of morality which elevates her self righteousness until she hurts someone or has the opposite the effect because she was so sure of herself, then becomes conflicted and unsure until she finds something else to champion. She seems incapable of approaching anything with nuance until it blows up in her face. Both Diane and Bojack are directionless and self-destructive. But while Bojack is aware of but complacent with his shitty behavior, Diane believes her good causes make her a good person, so she doesn't understand how she enables her self-destruction. People who relate to Bojack see the negative potential in themselves. He's the boogeyman of "that's what would happen to me if I let my vices take over". This video seems to be suggesting that Diane isn't so much the worst-case scenario for viewers that relate to her, as a very close to accurate representation.
