Diana and Acteon - Satyr and Acteon variations - 6 solos 1940s-1980s - Chabukiani, Nureyev, Vladi...

Diana and, ahem, Acteon was originally a divertissement for three soloists (a ballerina and two male dancers) in Petipa's Le Roi Candaule. In those times Acteon was actually Endymion, as he should be, and the other male role was a "Satyr". More than half a century later Vaganova disposed of the Satyr and rechristened, for reasons best known to herself, Endymion to Acteon. The choreography for the new born Acteon was redone completely by Chabukiani, but he retained Pugni's original music. Petipa's original choreo for Endymion is lost, but the notation of the Satyr variation has survived. Quite a beautiful variation, and the music is no less compelling.
The montage begins with the Satyr variation. The next one is Chabukiani himself doing the Acteon variation as Solor in La Bayadere (he had no qualms about moving variations around and he was in good company, too). The next two are the Kirov and Bolshoi's take on the matter some 20 years after Chabukiani. The last two are again Kirov and Bolshoi's, 40 yrs later.
While Kirov retained much of Chabukiani's choreo and none of his tempo, Bolshoi did the opposite - the tempo is there alright, but the choreo isn't. Bolshoi men at the time weren't in the business of selling choreo, they were in the business of hard selling the combo testosterone + jumps. And quite successfully, too - this approach has apparently prevailed. In our times they try equally hard to sell testosterone, but more often than not they actually sell acrobatics. Nobody seems to bother about characterization anymore, and why should they? Endymion is long lost, Acteon was never right. Maybe a new rechristening would solve the problem - how about Tarzan and Jane? :D

La mas limpia y clara es la de Nureyev, siempre me he preguntado si Vladimirov se adelanto en esta variación o el audio esta atrasado?

"Tarzan and Jane", lol. But you may have a point. Like the Satyr variation very much. Way better than the original Desire variation from your Sleeping Beauty compilation, IMO.

clearly nureyev's an bereznoy's are probabily the closest to vaganova's staging

+Navarre Brixen surely bolchoi vladimirov version is more free but also he started a fashion that still today shows too much acteon like a sheperd under steroids

I do think some variations were good interpolated in other ballets. But I can´t tell how and why I dislike this variation in Kingdom of Shades.

+Navarre Brixen I meant I dislike it in this case. Some variations look well interpolated in other ballets. To me this is not the case,

if so why not comment on one of his videos? why here? this isn't about Sergei Polunin, it's not even about the dancers featured in the video. seems to be about the choreography, read the video description.

It's interesting watching Nureyev who paces it so slowly and whose line is off. Technique has improved so much since his day. Cornejo, Carreno and Vasiliev are so far superior in the Acteon variation.
