Thank You ! For doing this ! I'm not a newby. However your explanation helped me out tremendously. Regarding stropping paste & what's needed, regarding the steel that's being stropped . Thank You !

Rough sided strop with compound vs smooth sided strop? Which one would work better at getting the absolute sharpest edge possible? I’m guessing the compound

I'm coming into this a bit late, but I found your tutorial very useful - thanks. Right now I'm only sharpening my Japanese Aogami #2 knife to 1000 grit & am wondering which compound you'd recommend? At some point I may get a finer stone & understand that then the Chromium Oxide would be the right choice, but for now coming off 1000 grit, which would you recommend? Many thanks - Tom

Would definitely recommend finishing with a stone in the #4000-6000 for a more finished edge. That being said, we find that with softer steels and some tougher Japanese coming off the #1000 to the Borachrome strops is an excellent pair.

What would you recommend as a stropping compound for CPM 3V?

Depending on how fine of a grit you finished at, we would recommend borochrome for toothier finishes and chromium oxide for fine finishes.

I use 4micron mono diamond on the smooth side of my main strop with 2.5micron chrome on the reverse. My second strop has 0.5micron paste on the reverse and just plain leather on the smooth side. With those I have everything covered that I need. I wouldn't worry about mono or poly diamonds. It takes about 200kg of pressure on the crystals to break them and you will never achieve that on a strop.

How does boron carbide compare to CBN?

If we understand correctly, the CBN cuts deeper and is significantly more expensive than the boron carbide. But both are the same hardness and derived from Boron. We find the boron carbide is great for deburring while not raising a new burr since it cuts at a more shallow level.
