Diagnosis Check Engine Light OBD1 1995 Impala SS and Repair.

On my 3800 mile road trip on in the Deep South on #hrpt2022, we ran into troubles of my check engine light coming on. Car ran fine, but I was only getting 17-18MPG.
This video, I try to use a EBay OBD2 to ODB1 adapter cable and read my check engine light with two different ODB2 scan tools. We also attempt the “paper clip” method, which proves to not work.
Last part of the video is checking the vacuum and making the repairs to get the light to turn off.

    I have a 94 impala SS. The scanner I had was apparently stolen but I tried the paper clip method. My light is not on but I’d figure I’d try it to see if there are hidden codes. I noticed the I.A.C was ticking including the fans coming on, but nothing else. I’m jus gonna make my own obd1 cable & learn to tune the pcm. These cars are certainly made to last & as a mechanic I’m never selling her 🇺🇸

    I've had my 95 Impala for 20 years now. I've only had one person who was able to scan my car. The OBD1 ports in these cars need to be fed power. The adapter he used looked exactly like a OBD1 scanner. The difference was this one had a DC plug on the side, the cord had alligator clips on the other end. He connected them to the battery and fed the power back into the OBD1 port and just like that my car was connected to his computer and we could see everything the car was doing including all the old dtc's. I still have fun asking people especially mechanics to scan my car and they have absolutely no idea how to do it.

    @@Twostallgarage I was told It could be anything from bad pcm to grounding problems to “you need a whole new wiring harness". I almost gave up. I tried every scanner and trick in book, i.e paperclip. One day I was having tires put on my daughter's car at the local tire shop. I explained my dilemma to the mechanic and he basically said challenge accepted. The rest is history and he is the only mechanic who has touched my car since.

    What can cause the 1st gear in a 95 impala SS to be slow. The car has no whole shot 0-60 it likes to hesitate and kicks in in 2nd and 3rd gear

    Well, could be a number of things. But the simplest and first thing I would do is fluid and filter change. You can tune the PCM for firmer shifts as well.

    Hello I was wondering if u could help me with my temp gauge I was told there was two sensors one on the pass side and one by the water pump are they both the same sensor?

  • @Twostallgarage

    @Twostallgarage

    Afternoon. They are two different ones. Passenger one in the head controls the temp gauge only. One on the water pump is for the PCM for fuel tables and to turn the fans on and off. If your gauge isn’t working, you’ll have to replace the one on the passenger side head. Before you go through that trouble, make sure the wires not broken. They break, mine did and I installed a new pig tail and sensor, because I had it.

    You need a scanner that can feed power to OBD1 port. The Actron cp9185 along with the Actron cp9127 ALDL cable kit will work.
