Diagnosis and Treatment | Heart Failure (Part 4)

This 4th lesson is the final lesson in our series on heart failure. In this lesson we cover the diagnosis of heart failure, heart failure classification, as well as a good look at heart failure treatment. This lesson concludes the series by giving you the final tools you need to identify and then the treatment of heart failure in your patients.
We start talking about the different diagnostic tests that can be used to help identify that your patient might have heart failure. We talk about EKGs, x-rays, echos, hemodynamics and lab tests.
From there we move in to the 2 primary classification systems used around the country for quantifying the extent of your patients heart failure. We cover the 4 classifications for each stage and what you would be looking for in each.
From there we move on to talk about the treatment of heart failure, specifically when your patient is in the early stages as well as when they are in the late stage of heart failure. We compare the preventative natures of early stage and the symptom management of late stage heart failure. We cover a lot of different treatment modalities when talking about this symptom management.
By the end of this lesson and thus the end of this series we hope that we were able to provide you with a solid foundation of information to be able to take out in to your practice and to be able to better care for your patients who have heart failure.

    I was diagnosed with hf 9 years ago. Started smoking 3 years after diagnosis but gave up smoke November 7, 2023.Gave up medication (enalapril)in 2019 until 2022 and started again with furosemide and spanK. Ive lived over 9 years now with ankle edema,ascites, SOB but I think I might have been diagnosed incorrectly. I kind of am trying to give up all medication 3 days before this post. Furosemide and Spanks kind of gave me shocking pain to my left chest. On the first dose, peed 12 times and realized my two legs become so skinny and company with shocking chest pain i gave up. ANY ADVICE ON THIS?

    Hi! Just wanted to clarify. 15:23 you mention beta blockers causing vasoconstriction and how this lowers SVR. Wouldn't SVR actually be increased since the vessels are clamping down? And wouldn't that be counter-productive to the reason we're giving the beta blocker in the first place?

  • @ICUAdvantage

    @ICUAdvantage

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Cynthia. Sorry for the confusion and listening to that part I certainly could have stated things a bit better. So while I started off mentioning about beta blockers, I then talked about what the activation of the beta receptors (15:16) by the sympathetic nervous system would lead to, including increased HR, contractility and vasoconstriction (which yes would be increased SVR). I then go on to talking about how by blocking the activation of these receptors (15:28) that we would see decreased HR, decreased workload of the heart, and vasodilation (decreased resistance to beat against). Hopefully that makes sense and again sorry I wasn't a bit more clear with that.
