Very interesting speech, even though I cannot agree with everything. India is now independent for 75 years. Corruption is everywhere; in the government administration, Judiciary and Law enforcement. Still 50% of the population are living in poverty. Caste system has been abolished, but ‘caste’ is in the minds of many. We see mismanagement and wasting resources everywhere. We hear the slogans of Nationalism and one India. There are divisions in the name of religion, caste, language, regions, political ideologies, economic status etc. We see the absence of civic consciousness and respecting the rights of others. We can blame the British for everything. As mentioned by the Professor, there were more than 500 princely states in India. It is a fact that British ruled India for 200 years with the help of Civil service employees who were mostly Indians. The Indian army, police, and other civil services were run by British with the help of Indians. At any one time there were less than 6000 British citizens who were in many top positions. Many of our leaders in the freedom struggle were educated in England. English education and English language are the main factors that helped the unity and eventually helped to obtain freedom and unification of India. English brought us to the world stage and even today, we cannot go and survive in other parts of India without English. India cannot attain desired progress due to many divisive forces. Any progressive government must make sure that the basic needs of all such as, food, shelter, clothing and hygiene are met for everyone. The resources of Land, Labor and Capital must be properly controlled and managed with an efficient system of production and distribution. Production, consumption and employment are inter related. More employment leads to more purchasing power to the common people and will bring more revenue to the government through taxation. Proper administration and efficient tax system are the secrets of progress in any developed country. In all those countries, the unemployment rates are low. The unemployed and low income people get many incentives such as unemployment benefits, social security and other welfare benefits. It is sad to know the current state of affairs India and especially of Kerala. The educated youngsters want to leave and go to more developed countries.

Informative talk, but the proposal of doing everything in Malayalam is totally unrealistic at this point because the Malayali population is only 35 million or so. Chinese can do it, since they use one language across their 1.2 billion people. Using this 'Malayalam logic' inside India, there will be 25 mini civilizations and they will not be able to interact among each other because of their language barrier. Then what about the rest of the world? How do we deal with their ideas? Through Malayalam? Only Thakazi's Chemeen has been translated from Malayalam, may be a few others here and there. The way I see it, Indian population has our own limitations. Historically, we never went and conquered any big region militarily except Cholas going to Ceylon, Far East, Thailand, Indonesia, Ankor Wat etc., but everyone else walked over us. We couldn't even defend our own territory, inspite of Rajput heroism, starting with Alexander who came all the way from Greece and did a number on us. May be the Ahimsa concept, Nonviolence - going back all the way to Patanjali's Ashtadhayi, Chapter 1, Yama, the first principle there - had something to do with it. By the way, the second principle there is Truthfulness, the third being not stealing. The fifth is about not being greedy. On top of that, the passive teachings of Buddhism. I like them all, it all makes complete sense to me. Being peaceful all the time is my own preference, like most of us, but if your enemy does not value these principles equally, you are at a disadvantage, as it happened to us again and again, Gazni proving it savagely to us. When Portuguese came to Calicut in 1495, why didn't the king Samudiri there send his troops to attack Lisbon in retaliation? That would have given Gama second thoughts. Or when the British came over and started pushing us around, why didn't the mighty Indian kings pull together their army and send them to England to capture Buckingham palace? That would have paused the British. Why do we act victim always? The weak gets thrown out everywhere, that is the rough World order. Nothing new, in Nature too, survival of the fittest is the rule. Fast forward, how come 1.3B Indians can't win a few gold medals in the Olympics nowadays? It can't be because of the British or the language barrier or corruption or lack of trying. Other countries with even worse corruption - true, there aren't that many - routinely get gold medals in Olympics. Turkish clans ruled and looted India for over 800 years, Timur, Gazni, Thuglak, then Moghuls ...Our Rajputs, the best among us, couldn't do anything much to save us. Inspite of the mighty Marata valor, Shivaji's heroism etc., Mughals essentially did whatever they wanted. Finally, the British intervention saved us, a mire powerful.piwer, put a stop to all of it, recalibrated the entire country and gave it back to us, not intentionally, but it worked out in our favor. We are #3 power, in economic sense, now. True, the British were rough to us, they didnt invite us to dinner or mingle with us socially, but the education system they set up in India, the reforms like blocking Sati, reestablishing the sense of fairness, eventually catapulted Indians to the 20th century. Imagine when Benedict abolished Sati in 1829, an Indian delegation ( with 800 signatures) petitioned to the London Privy Council then to bring back the popular Sati in the name of our scriptures! Luckily, the British had more sense and rejected the Indian proposal of burning widows at the funeral fire. I am not minimizing Raja Ram Mohan Roy's or others efforts, but that is the Indian sense based on our glorious tradition. What were those 800 signature guys thinking? Good thoughts starting with Ashtadhayi, Brahasutras, when pushed far can generate bad ideas, Sati being a prime example. I simply can't get over Sati or can think of another example of this type of horror story, justified female murder, in any other culture. All in all, my thinking is that British occupation turned out to be a good deal for Indians overall. We got a kuck in our butt to wake up. True, we were treated like coolies then, kicked around as second class citizens in our own country. But weseem to have learned nothing from that bad experience; look among us now, how we still treat each other, our fellow citizens - untouchabilty, caste hierarchy etc. are still fully at work among us, albeit in a subtle way. In legal terms, we have no standing even to talk of injustice to us when we ourselves routinely treat our weaker fellow citizens worse, even now. Kohinoir jewel? I am of the extreme minority opinion that let the British keep the loot as fee for setting up the Indian railways through the jungles then over maleria and mosquitoes and for putting a stop to Sati. The Nizam of HYD had even more precious stones. Where are they now? Some sold by Nizam family, some got looted, some in Swiss banks now, etc ... Moreover, we don't value our own antiques; our temple art, etc, get looted routinely, with our people being the main enablers. We don't even have decent museums in India like the British museum to preserve our precious artifacts. Except our tight family system, rest of the civic sense has a lot more place to grow. May be a sense of overall gratitude to the British is missing among us? That would be a good start for us ... to contemplate on all the good things that has happened to us. I agree, some unified language for all of India would be good for progress and unity, then Sanskrit would be my preference. That is however impossible. Hindi? We tried/ still trying. The present mixed path w/ English for Science works somewhat. I can't think of a better option.
